I realized that people can break up with you over the pettiest issues. I used to think that breakups were only over serious, irreconcilable issues but the day someone broke up with me over a Netflix password, I knew people can break up over anything.
Sharon wasn’t really the kind of girl I dated. I’m not one to compare people with others but she was just a complete opposite of my exes. She had a job but it wasn’t very well-paying. She worked as a shop attendant and though she was beautiful, there was still a lot of room for improvement.
For instance, she had body odour which really irked me. I didn’t know how to tell her so I bared with her hoping that she would change with time. She also loved to gossip about people I didn’t even know about. By the time the relationship ended, I knew about her aunt in the village, her cousin who went to Saudi Arabia and disappeared and some of her high school friends who have multiple kids with no husbands.
It was quite evident that the relationship wouldn’t go far. However, I stayed with her because I didn’t want to be alone. I also saw her a few times so it was easy for me to overlook her imperfections.
The first time she came to my house, I was left speechless. I didn’t expect much but the very least a guest can do is clean up after themselves.
“I’m so hungry.” She said as soon as she got to my house.
“There’s food in the kitchen.”
The moment I told her that she dashed to the kitchen, removed anything she could eat and brought them to the living room then devoured the food as she watched TV. After talking to her for a few minutes, I dashed back to my home office where I could enjoy some privacy as I watched a football game.
She stayed in that position for hours. I came back after watching two games and she was still watching TV with trash all over the floor, coffee table and couch.
I didn’t say anything because I didn’t want to offend her and it was only her first day at my place.
We sat silently as I tried to watch whatever she was watching. After an hour, I got bored so I excused myself again.
“I’m going to bed,” I said.
“Okay. I’m coming.”
She didn’t come until 2 am. The following day, she woke up early to prepare breakfast. By the time I woke up, I was greeted by the inviting smell of bacon, sausage and eggs. The house was also sparkling clean.
My attitude towards her started changing. I even offered to take her for lunch.
“Thanks for breakfast. I’ll take you out for lunch later.”
After she got ready, I brought her one of my designer perfumes to spray on herself so she wouldn’t embarrass me in the restaurant.
“Oh, it smells so nice. Can I take it?”
I didn’t answer her but the look I gave her was a clear answer.
The date was okay but we didn’t talk much.
Despite our awkward moments, Sharon kept coming to my place occasionally. During one of the weekends that she was at my place, I left her in the house to attend an event. I didn’t think it was a big deal since she was already familiar with the place.
I came back in the afternoon to an angry girl.
“There’s no food in your house.”
“What do you mean? There’s lots of food.”
“Where?” She asked, opening the fridge.
“There’s stew and chapati.”
“They’re spoiled.”
“They’re not. I ate them yesterday.”
“Just check that chapati.” She said lifting one of them which had mold on it.
“You can boil rice.”
“Where is it?”
I removed it for her and she started preparing the rice. Once she was done, she ate silently as she scrolled through her phone. She didn’t even ask how the event was. I could tell she was upset but she didn’t say what was bothering her so I kept trying to guess what was wrong.
Eventually, she joined me on the couch and I tried to spark a conversation.
“How was your day?”
“It was good but I was hungry and you didn’t bring me anything from the event.”
“Oh, it was a work event. I couldn’t really take anything.”
“Okay. Can I have your Netflix password?”
“I don’t really share my Netflix password.”
“I’ve seen two names of girls so they definitely have your Netflix password.”
I was quiet. I didn’t expect her to confront me. Normally, Sharon is reserved and sweet. I got to see a different side of her but I didn’t expect that it would be because of a Netflix password.
“Those are my friends and I changed my password a long time ago.”
“If you had given them your Netflix password back then why can’t you give me now?”
“I just don’t want many people in my account.”
“I’ve been nothing but nice to you. I wash your dishes, make you breakfast and clean your house yet you can’t do something as simple as giving me your Netflix password. You can’t even bring me anything to eat yet you know there’s no food in the house.” She ranted.
“Are you really upset because I haven’t given you my Netflix password?”
“Yes. You treat me so badly.”
“How do I treat you badly?”
“I feel like you’re not really interested in me and I’m just entertaining you until you meet your next girl.”
Once again, I had nothing to say since I didn’t want to lie to her.
“Fine, I’ll give you my Netflix password if it means that much to you.”
“I don’t want it anymore. In fact, I’m not coming back here again. I know you don’t love me and there’s no need for me to try and change your mind.”
Just like that, I was single because I refused to give someone my Netflix password. Well, there were other issues but it was my Netflix password that hurt her the most. I’ve now learnt that if a girl asks for your Netflix password, just give it to her.
