When my friend invited me to his apartment, I thought it would be the usual plan of drinking. I got there only to find a house full of beautiful girls and a few familiar faces. At first, I was so confused then it hit me that it was my birthday. I had completely forgotten that it was my special day. Luckily, I had great friends who threw me a surprise birthday.
“Happy birthday.” The girl said to me as I made my way inside.
“Thanks,” I answered without paying much attention to her.
A lot was happening for me to focus on one thing. So, I didn’t realize that the same girl was the one who approached me as the day went by. After catching up with the guests, she came to sit next to me on the couch and sparked a conversation.
“Paul has told me about you.” She confessed.
“Really? What had he said?”
“He said that you’re really nice and you’re single.”
I almost choked on my drink as soon as she mentioned that I was single. The truth was I was not just single but painfully single. I hadn’t been on a date in such a long time that I forgot how it felt to have a woman’s attention. However, the more Rachel talked to me, the more those familiar feelings came back.
“Are you single?” I asked her.
“Yeah. My ex was the worst so I had to end the relationship.”
“That’s sad. A beautiful girl like you should be treated like a queen.” I flirted but instantly regretted it.
“You’re funny.” She said, laughing. “I should go check on my friends. I’ll be back.”
She got up to leave and I could keep my eyes off her backside as she walked away.
“Bro, I see you’ve met Rachel,” Paul said.
“That’s the Rachel?”
“Yes, that’s her.”
“She definitely leaves up to the hype. I think she likes me.”
“She likes anyone with money. Don’t let her or her friends take advantage of you.”
Before I could ask more questions, Rachel came back and Paul left. We talked the whole day and got to know each other better. At around 11 pm, her friends suggested that we should go to a club. Most of the guys were already drunk and no one really had the energy to go out including me.
“Well, I’ll see you later then,” Rachel said as she left with her friends.
“Of course, I’ll call you tomorrow.”
I couldn’t believe my luck. I hadn’t just met one of the hottest girls I had ever seen but also she was attracted to me. There was no way I was going to waste the opportunity.
I called Rachel as soon as I woke up but her phone went unanswered. I tried several times but I got the same result. It hadn’t hit me how early it was until I checked my phone and saw that it was only 7.30 a.m.
“She’s probably asleep,” I said to myself.
I couldn’t go back to sleep so I watched a bunch of Netflix movies to pass the time. By the time I finally got up from the couch, it was around noon.
Rachel hadn’t returned my calls so I decided to call her again. She picked up almost immediately.
“Hi, David.”
“Hey, how did you sleep?” I asked, trying not to sound desperate.
“I slept great. What about you?”
“Me too,” I answered then paused briefly. “ I was wondering if you were free to have lunch with me.”
At the moment, I thought I was as charming as a Hollywood heartthrob but looking back, I must have sounded like the most desperate guy on earth.
I could hear her whispering to her friends then she replied.
“Sure, I’d love to have lunch with you.”
I let out an audible sigh which made her burst out in laughter.
“I’ll send you the location.”
“And Uber money.” She added.
“Sure,” I said then hang up.
It didn’t strike me as unusual for her to ask for Uber money. After all, she was in college and every penny she had counted. I sent her Ksh 1000 even though the Uber would have cost much less.
She showed up to the restaurant wearing the same clothes that she had on last night which was a little odd. Still, I was too smitten by her good looks to question her.
The waiter came to serve us and Rachel quickly grabbed the menu from me.
After perusing it, she asked, “Are you serving brunch today?”
“Yes.” The waiter answered with a huge smile on his face knowing he was going to get a huge commission.
“Okay, I want that.”
“Of course, miss. The brunch buffet is right over there. Will you be having mimosas or juice?”
“Mimosa.”
Sure.” He said scribbling on his notepad. “What about you sir?”
“I’ll have the same,” I answered enthusiastically.
Once we had placed the order, I got up to serve myself but Rachel stayed behind. When I came back, her friends were sitting at the table next to us. I couldn’t hide my shock but I assumed it was a coincidence. Before I could even sit, Rachel got up to join them and left me alone for over 10 minutes. I could hear them asking her why she had left me alone.
“He’s fine. Do you guys want food?”
“Who will pay?”
“He will,” Rachel answered then got up and headed to the buffet.
She piled so much food on her plate that I felt embarrassed as she walked towards me. However, she didn’t come to our table. She placed the food on her friends’ table and returned to serve herself. This time, she came and sat next to me. I ate my food in silence as she conversed with her friends. Once I was down eating, I quickly called the waiter and asked him for my bill.
“For my order only,” I said.
“What? Are you not going to pay for our meals?”
“First of all, I didn’t invite your friends. I invited you alone. Second, I don’t know why you even agreed to come if you weren’t going to talk.”
“You’re such a cheapskate.” She said with a look of disgust on her face.
The waiter brought my bill and placed another in front of her. I paid for mine and left without saying anything to her. Paul later called me to ask what had happened on the date.
“She told me that you refused to pay for her meal.”
“Well, I didn’t invite her friends.”
“Do you know who paid for the meal?”
“Who?”
“Her ex.”
Rachel may have been the most beautiful girl I had ever seen and I may have been willing to do anything to win her over some boundaries shouldn’t be crossed. I may be a good guy but I’m not that nice and I hate when people take advantage of my kindness.
