What would you do when your crush suddenly starts paying attention to you? You’d try everything to impress him/her, right? But what if they’re simply not that into you and are only talking to you because their friends told them to? That’s exactly what happened to me and what I thought was going to be the best moment of my life turned out to be an awkward movie date.
I wanted to get Ben’s attention so bad but he was always focused on other girls. It shuttered my self-esteem but I knew that he would one day see my worth. Sure enough, he did. After a little nudge from his friends, Ben decided to give me a chance and see where our relationship would go. However, it wasn’t going to be easy. He made me earn a date with him literally.
Every time I suggested going on a movie date which is a standard for any relationship, he looked at me like I was crazy. He instead wanted to go clubbing which I wasn’t a big fan of since I didn’t drink.
“Can’t you drink a little for me? I promise I will take care of you.” He insisted.
“I can’t. You know that goes against everything I stand for.”
It’s not that I was too holy to drink. On the contrary, I was once a partyholic who drank from Monday to Monday. This led me on a wrong path and I started doing hard drugs. Eventually, they checked me into rehab. I made a full recovery and vowed never to drink in my life – not even a glass of wine. This made my new relationship a bit hard since he was a partyholic. The idea of going on a movie date sounded so childish to him.
However, after a bit of persuasion, he seemed to warm up to the idea of a movie date. Either that or he figured he wasn’t going to have his way. For me, it really didn’t matter. I was just happy that he was open to the suggestion.
“Plus you can also drink before the movie,” I said jokingly.
“Let’s just go watch the movie and get it over with.”
That wasn’t the attitude I expected but I strived to make him see that a movie date was also fun. One of my friends gifted me premier tickets to a movie so it was definitely going to be better than the usual movie date. I had only been to one other movie premier which was extremely fun. There was no way anything could go wrong or so I thought.
Finally, we got to the movie theatre and indeed nothing was the same. There was a buffet. Everyone dressed to kill and had a good time. They even served cocktails which made Ben pretty excited.
“Wow. This is different.”
“I told you.”
He seemed to be enjoying himself and even wandered off to mingle with some of the public figures who were in attendance. I watched him from a distance taking selfies and downing cocktail after cocktail.
“You should probably eat something. We still have a movie to watch.” I said.
“Relax. I’m okay.”
As I predicted, he got drunk and made a fool of us all. I was ashamed to even say he was with me. it got so bad that one of the premier organizers even asked him to leave. However, I convinced him to let him stay. By now, everyone was staring at us as I tried to sober him up but I still stood by him through the embarrassment. Finally, he sobered up just in time for the movie. I could tell that he was slightly embarrassed as he wasn’t as talkative as usual. However, I never expected how he treated me after that.
Once the doors were opened and we were allowed to get into the screening room, he completely ignored me. In fact, he acted like I didn’t exist. He bought his own snacks and then went to queue as I bought mine. By the time I made it into the room all there were no empty seats near my date which forced me to sit some rows behind him. However, I told myself that it didn’t make a difference since we wouldn’t be able to talk to each other even if I sat next to him.
He didn’t glance at me for even a second and a couple of minutes into the movie, I noticed that he was talking to the girl seated beside him and even offered her some popcorn. I might have had a crush on him but I had my limits and I had had enough. I texted him that I was going to the washrooms so he wouldn’t follow me then got up and left.
Just outside the movie theatre, I broke down into tears and it took some of the attendants to calm me down. I managed to call my friend who came to pick me up and took me home. Ben finally called almost three hours later. I don’t even think he noticed that I hadn’t come back to the screening room.
“Where are you?” he asked.
“It’s been three hours, Ben. You’ve just noticed that I wasn’t there. This was our movie date.”
“Listen, I feel bad for the way I acted. Let me take you out.”
I knew that he was simply putting up an act probably because the girl he was flirting with rejected him. It was stupid of me to think anything good could come out of our relationship knowing his character. Even though the movie date didn’t go as planned and our relationship didn’t suffice, I’m glad I gave it a shot and quickly learned my lesson before it was too late.
When we finally met in person, he didn’t seem remorseful at all. In fact, he told me that we were not a good match and that he had met “his type”. That was the first and last time I went out of my way to impress a man in the name of having a crush.
