I had barely settled into my apartment when I received the dreadful news that one of my close friends had passed away. Though we knew what was coming, the news still hit me hard. We watched him fight for his life hoping for a miracle but in the end, he lost the battle with cancer. As friends, we organized a fundraiser for his funeral and helped his family coordinate everything.
Through the process, I got to meet some of his family and friends. During the funeral, more of his friends came out to bid him farewell. There was one guy who we had not met before but interacted with everyone. Eventually, he made it to our group and introduced himself as Frank’s former schoolmate.
“I read about his death on Facebook.” He said.
“Okay. We didn’t see you at the fundraiser or the vigils.”
“I was out of town. In fact, I travelled back just to attend the funeral.” He said.
“Well, you’re most welcome.”
For the rest of the funeral, the mysterious man followed us around like a shadow without saying a word. When we sat at one table, he sat at the next. When one of us got up to attend to a guest, he followed them. We tried asking anyone if they knew the guy, but they denied it. Even Frank’s former schoolmates from primary, secondary, and university didn’t recognize him.
“Maybe he was a quiet guy.” One of Frank’s friends said.
Nonetheless, nobody really thought much about the mysterious guy. At the end of the day, we bid each other goodbye and went our way. A few days later, I received a call from an unknown number.
“Hi, Sarah.” A familiar voice said.
“Hi,” I answered, puzzled.
“It’s Eric.”
“Eric?”
“We met at Frank’s funeral.”
Immediately, I connected the dots and figured it was the mysterious guy. I didn’t know how to react since he gave me a weird vibe and now, he had my number. However, I decided to be more open-minded and hear him out.
“Oh. How are you doing?”
“Very well. Just missing you.” He answered which really rubbed me the wrong way. I barely knew this guy yet he was claiming that he missed me. Additionally, nobody knew who the guy was despite his claims that he was Frank’s former classmate.
We chatted for a short while before hanging up. I hoped that he never called me again but it wasn’t long before I saw the same number. He continued to call me three more times in the same night.
I tried to ask my friends if they had received any call from the guy but no one seemed to know what I was talking about. Some didn’t even remember the guy.
“Just block the guy.” A friend advised.
“I don’t think he means any harm.”
“Suit yourself. But don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
I didn’t block him especially since I thought it would only make things worse. From past experience, blocking someone only aggravates the situation. So, I chose to entertain the guy until he got tired. However, I didn’t expect it to go so far. The guy was relentless and called me persistently for the next few weeks. Little did I know, he was collecting information about me. The small conversations we had fed him the information he needed. Before I knew it, he knew almost every important detail about me like where I worked, if I had children and if I lived with anyone. Luckily, I didn’t tell him where I lived.
After I had had enough of his unwanted attention, I decided to block him. Almost immediately, he called with a different number and I picked up the call.
“You think you can block me? My dear, you can’t run away from me. In fact, I have a little surprise for you.” He said.
I couldn’t imagine what the surprise was since anything was possible with this guy. All I could do was hope he wasn’t thinking of harming me. For the next couple of days, I invited my friend to stay in my apartment with me for security. Nothing happened. Actually, he never called which made my friend think that I was exaggerating the situation.
She left the following morning. That same day, I received a package at work from an anonymous sender. It was a bouquet of flowers with a note. I tried to enquire who had sent the flowers but the company insisted that the sender wanted to be anonymous. I knew it was the mysterious man from the funeral but I wanted confirmation.
For the first time, I called him and he picked up on the first ring.
“I got your delivery.”
“You’re welcome.”
“What are they for?”
“Didn’t you read the card?”
“No, because I didn’t know who sent them.”
“Well, now that you know, read it.”
“I will but what’s up with all the mystery?”
“It’s just my nature. I’m a very discreet person.” He said as if it was a flex.
When I finally read the card, it said:
“I just wanted to congratulate you on your latest promotion at work.”
I hadn’t told him anything about the promotion so the only way he would have known is if he checked my social media account. It was scary knowing that someone like him had gotten access to my accounts where I posted some of my most personal moments. After that strange encounter, I had to deactivate my accounts, change my number and warn both my apartment and work security about the guy. Everything seemed to have settled until one of my friends told me that they had got a call from a mysterious man.
I cautioned her and told her not to interact with the guy. Till today, nobody has ever seen the guy and we don’t really know where he came from or where he is at the moment. A friend joked that maybe he’s a billionaire who was trying to find a real partner. Whether he was a billionaire or not, I didn’t care because he gave me serious stalker vibes. I’m glad that he no longer has contact with me and I hope to never hear from him again.
