It took Lilly two hours to send that message. She had battled with the decision because she knew how Zach would react. He always acted defensive any time she brought up the topic. Nonetheless, she needed to speak up because she loved him.
“Babe, I feel like we’re disconnected. I don’t know if you have noticed the distance between us,” Lilly texted Zach.
Zach read the message and then started typing. Lilly saw the blue ticks, then the ‘typing’ prompt, and then nothing. Zach went offline for two hours before responding.
“Lilly, what did I do this time?” Zach texted.
“I didn’t say you did anything. I just feel some distance between us,” Lilly responded.
“This is your imagination. All you do these days is look for things to argue about. I am getting fed up,” Zach replied.
“Can we hang out this weekend?” Lilly asked Zach.
“I don’t think that’s ideal given our fights. I’ve had a long week. I want a peaceful weekend,” Zach responded.
Lilly cried after reading that text. She knew something was wrong but had no evidence. She got into detective mode. Zach wasn’t active on social media platforms, but his friends were. They loved documenting their escapades, so she thought she would piece together Zach’s whereabouts through his friends. So she camped on Instagram and Snapchat on Friday and Saturday, but nothing significant came up.
The friends seemed to have been out of town, but Zach wasn’t with them. She couldn’t see anything in the pictures and videos suggesting Zach was part of the crew. That only meant that Zach was most likely at home. For a moment, she liked the idea because that would collaborate with his claims of needing a peaceful weekend.
Then it occurred to her that he was probably at home with another woman.
Lilly found herself in another conundrum. She hated that Zach kept telling her that she was acting crazy, and showing up at his house unannounced to confirm her suspicions played right into his accusations. On the other hand, she needed to figure out what was going on. She had invested a year into her relationship and loved that man. Curiosity overpowered restraint, but she decided to talk to Zach first.
“Hey babe, I did some batch cooking and I want to drop some food at your place. Are you around?” Lilly texted.
“Hey, yeah, I’m in the house,” Zach responded.
She had batch cooked the previous day but didn’t intend to share the food with Zach, but it was a good excuse. She was at Zach’s place in an hour.
“Hey, I missed you!” Lilly told Zach as he opened the door for her.
“You’re looking good,” Zach told her as he kissed her.
At that moment, everything felt okay. Lilly felt like she had imagined the distance. Zach was waiting for a match and served Lilly something to drink as they talked. It was small talk, nothing on their relationship. They watched the game together and then decided to order takeout from one of the food delivery apps. Lilly took Zach’s phone to place the order and saw a previous order.
“I see you’ve just been having pizza,” Lilly remarked.
“Chilled weekend, I didn’t feel like cooking,” Zach responded and took the phone. He quickly asked her what she wanted to order.
Lilly didn’t voice it, but she noticed that pizza was ordered from a restaurant that Zach hated. She didn’t want to ruin the moment by asking many questions. They placed the order and waited for the delivery. As they waited for food, they decided to listen to music and then watch a movie once the food arrived so that they didn’t have to take a break from the film to pick up the food.
Zach went to the washroom, leaving Lilly to play the music. So Lilly went to YouTube and noticed the search history was full of bongo songs. Zach would never listen to bongo, so someone else, most likely a woman, was in the house. She quickly found a mix to play as she processed her discovery.
Zach came back all chirpy. He started telling her a story about something that had happened at work that week. Lilly decided to go with the flow. He hadn’t spoken to her like this in weeks. She wasn’t ready to spoil the moment.
The food arrived an hour later. They decided to eat before watching the movie. Finally, Zach took the remote to select the movie. He saw it too, but it was too late Lilly had seen it too.
“Babe, who was here?” Lilly asked.
“What do you mean?” Zach feigned ignorance.
“Don’t play dumb with me! What are these Netflix suggestions and history? I know you wouldn’t watch lovey-dovey movies on your own.”
“So now, you want to decide what I can and can’t watch?” Zach retorted.
“What about the bongo music on your YouTube or the pizza order from the restaurant you hate? You made me think I was imagining things but you had someone in your house. How long have you been cheating Zach?”
“It’s not what you think. It was just a one-time thing,” Zach responded in panic.
They argued for another twenty minutes before Lilly stormed out. Then she remembered she had brought him food and went back inside.
“I will not cook food for you to feed your whores!” Lilly said as they struggled to find a place to put the food.
Zach pleaded for forgiveness, but Lilly couldn’t overcome the betrayal.
