Like most people in Nairobi, Anita had undergone character development so many times that, at some point, she ended up getting used to it. She had spent most of her 20s dealing with men who followed the same script. It was either cheating or baby mama drama.
She grew tired of the betrayal, but just as she was ready to give up on men, she met Brian, who managed to charm his way into her heart. He was handsome, financially stable, and very romantic. The three qualities that Anita loved in men. Things went smoothly as they got to know each other until he mentioned that he was a father to a four-year-old girl.
Anita’s first thought was to let him go, but Brian assured her that his relationship with his baby mama was strictly about their child. She didn’t seem to believe it until a few months into dating when they attended his baby mama’s wedding. Their relationship grew stronger, and Anita also formed a solid bond with his daughter.
Everything seemed to be amazing until the day they clocked one year. The day started well; Brian woke up early and ordered breakfast for the both of them. When Anita woke up, Brian was beside her, holding a bouquet of roses and gifts from her favourite stores. Once they were done taking their breakfast, he rushed out of the house for a meeting.
As Anita cleaned up, she noticed that Brian had forgotten his laptop, which was still on. She figured he would need it for his meeting and decided to switch it off so she could take it to him. Immediately she sat down to do so; a message popped up. Brian had forgotten to log out of his WhatsApp. Anita had never had a reason to suspect her man, but she couldn’t help but check the notification.
It was a nude sent by his personal assistant Alice with the text, “Can’t wait to see you next weekend!”.
As she opened the app to go through their messages, she realized that his assistant wasn’t the only one he was cheating with. Brian had received three other notifications from three different women asking when he would be able to meet up with them.
Having gone through different cheating incidences, she didn’t seem surprised. However, seeing as he knew what she had gone through and decided to put her through that again was heartbreaking. The tears rolled down her cheeks as she remembered all those times, she had caught her exes with other women. This had become a habit in her life, and it wasn’t fair.
“He can’t get away with this,” She thought to herself as she switched off the laptop.
That evening she didn’t bring up what had happened. Instead, she pretended everything was okay until she could execute her revenge plan. When it got to Friday, Brian’s baby mama brought his daughter for the weekend. The three spent time together until Brian left abruptly for a work emergency which she knew was code for a booty call.
The following week, Anita packed her bags and went to her parent’s place to calm her mind and to give Brian space to spend time with his secretary. Day in and day out, he would call and text, which made her a bit happy until it got to the weekend when he stopped.
Anita stayed with her parents for two weeks before returning to Brian’s place. Seeing him approach her and pull her in for a hug made her realize enough was enough. That evening as Brian was on the phone, she opened his side drawer and deliberately dropped his box of condoms. She picked a few from the box and poked a couple of holes.
“Babe? What are you doing? He asked as he approached her.
“I dropped your box of condoms, and as I was picking them up, I realized that some of them have holes in them,” She replied.
“Holes?” He asked.
“Yeah, I think your daughter played with them or something,” She said as she showed him the condoms.
Brian snatched the condoms from her hands and examined them closely. His facial expression changed as he went through each of the sachets she gave him.
“Anyway, I’m glad we haven’t used them for a while. That would have put us in such a compromising situation,” She said as she finished picking the rest from the floor.
Brian didn’t respond; he placed the condoms by his bedside and got into bed. Anita smiled as she put the box back in the drawer and got into bed. For the first time in two weeks, she was going to sleep like a baby.
The following day, she woke up, and Brian was not on his side of the bed. As she walked down the stairs, she saw him seated on the sofa with a stressed look.
“Babe, are you okay?” She asked as she approached him.
Brian didn’t respond.
At that very moment, someone rang their doorbell. She stood up and opened the door, shocked to see Alice, who shoved her and stormed into the living room.
“What do you mean pregnant?” She asked in a loud tone.
Brian looked at Alice but didn’t say a word.
“Aren’t you going to say anything?” She asked.
Anita returned to Brian’s room, packed her things, and walked back down. As she waited for her Uber, the doorbell rang again. She opened the door with a smile and found another one of Brian’s women waiting by the doorstep. Like Alice, she shoved her and approached him with the same question.
Anita watched as the woman yelled at Brian, who was just silent by the sofa. She knew the prank had gone a bit too far, but she didn’t care. He deserved it. Her uber driver arrived, and as she walked out the door, Brian didn’t even realize she was gone. Once she arrived at her destination, she sent Brian a text revealing the truth and blocked his number.
