“So, how do you feel about mum and dad coming into town?” Gina asked as she sat down on the sofa.
“I don’t know, honestly. I hope they don’t end up fighting and embarrassing me in front of Amy’s parents,” Arthur responded as he poured himself a drink.
“I’m sure they won’t,” Amy replied.
“I hope so, G; her parents already think I’m not good enough for her,” He said.
“Them or you?” Gina asked.
“What do you mean?” Arthur asked.
“You’re my brother, and I love you, but ever since you met Amy, you’ve been dealing with her like she’s too good for you,” Gina responded.
“Because she is, to date, I don’t understand how she settled for a guy like me,” Arthur responded.
“You need to stop thinking of yourself as a low-life person. You’re smart, you earn a good salary, and Amy loves you exactly the way you are,” Gina said.
“I’ve got to go; I’m supposed to pick up Dad from the airport tomorrow,” Arthur said before finishing his drink.
“Well, let me know if the bimbo he brings along is at least almost his age,” Gina said.
“I hope she is because I don’t want another Mitchelle incident,” Arthur said.
They both laughed as he headed to the door.
“Bye, sis,” He said before leaving.
“See you on Sunday,” She replied.
The following morning, Arthur woke up early, freshened up, and just as he was about to leave his father sent him a text.
“Hey, got a ride from the airport. See you on Sunday.”
“Okay. See you then,” he responded.
Arthur changed his clothes and decided to binge-watch his favorite series. An hour later, he blacked out for a few hours and was woken up by a call from Amy.
“Hello,” he said after picking up the call.
“Hey babe, just wanted to check if you are free tomorrow,” She replied.
“Yeah, what did you have in mind?” He asked.
“The usual dinner date sounds good,” She responded.
“I’ll pick you up at 7 pm,” He said.
“See you then,” She replied enthusiastically before hanging up.
Arthur spent the rest of the evening watching movies and playing video games. The following day being a Saturday, he decided to sleep in until he heard his doorbell ringing. He walked lazily down the stairs and opened the door to find his mother, who looked pretty upset.
“Mum? How did you get here?” He asked.
“I took a cab, which I wasn’t supposed to do since you and your sister were supposed to agree who was to pick me up,” She responded.
“I’m so sorry, mum, it’s been hectic these past few days,” He lied.
Arthur ordered her favorite meal from a nearby restaurant as his mother made herself comfortable. He rushed to freshen up before the food was delivered. The two spent the afternoon catching up. By 6 pm, Arthur was ready to pick up Amy for their date. He dropped his mum at a hotel and went to his girlfriend’s place.
The excitement he felt to see her was unmatched. Arthur loved spending time with Amy, and every time he saw her, his mood would get better. As he approached her residence, he noticed a man selling flowers and picked up white roses since they were her favourites. He then made his way to her house. As he parked his car, he tried calling her, but her phone was engaged. Finally, after three calls, he decided to go to her place and find out if she was ready. She opened the door, and Arthur was surprised that she was not ready.
“I am so sorry, babe; I forgot to tell you we’ll have to postpone our date,” She said.
“Why?” He asked in a disappointed tone.
“I have to meet up with my dad. He wants to discuss some important things,” She replied.
“Ohh, okay,” Arthur replied.
“I’ll make it up to you, I promise,” She said.
Arthur walked in and placed the roses on her table.
“So I’ll see you tomorrow then?” He asked.
“Actually, could you drop me off at the restaurant?” She asked.
“Sure,” He replied.
Amy rushed into her bedroom to get ready. Arthur decided to watch tv as he waited for her. As he sat down, he heard her phone ringing. Since he couldn’t pick up the call, he let it ring the first and second times. The third time he picked it up to take it to her, he noticed the number calling was his dad’s.
Once he got to her bedroom door, he hung up and sent a text with the reservation details. Arthur couldn’t believe that Amy had lied about where she was going and, worse, that she had cancelled their date. He didn’t know what to believe, but knowing his dad, he was convinced that Amy was his latest catch.
“Okay. I’m ready,” Amy said as she stepped out of her room.
Arthur couldn’t help but admire how beautiful she looked. But then he remembered it was his father she was going to see.
“Shall we,” He said, trying to hide his disappointment.
Once they got to the restaurant, Amy started convincing him to leave, which seemed logical, given who she was meeting. He drove off as Amy approached the restaurant entrance and returned to the same spot once she entered. He watched his dad walk into the restaurant alone a few minutes later. Arthur couldn’t believe that his father could betray him like this and that Amy, who he loved would stoop so low.
“I’ve seen enough,” He thought to himself as he started his car and drove back home.
On a typical day, he would have waited for Amy’s text before heading to bed, but given all he had seen, it was not a priority anymore. He tossed his phone on the sofa and went to bed. The next day he woke up at 10 am and went downstairs to check his phone.
Amy had texted him and called three times which gave him a sense of relief since he knew she hadn’t slept at his dad’s. However, it didn’t change the betrayal he felt, and the thought of all of them being in one place together was annoying.
Time passed, and before he knew it, Arthur was at Amy’s parent’s house having an early dinner with his family and hers.
“So, what did you guys do last night?’ Arthur’s mother asked.
“She had other plans, so I went home,” Arthur replied bluntly.
Amy looked at Arthur and whispered, “Are we okay?”
He ignored her question and continued eating.
“So Amy, how has work been for you?” Arthur’s dad asked.
“You didn’t catch up on that yesterday?” Arthur replied.
“Excuse me?” Amy asked.
“Don’t deny it now, I saw his text, and I saw my dad walk into the same restaurant you were in,” He replied.
“Arthur, this is not what you are thinking,” His dad said.
“So what is it then? If you are not dating my girlfriend, then what is it?” Arthur asked in anger.
Amy and Arthurs’s Dad looked at each other for a moment and remained silent.
“So all this time, you wanted my father?” Arthur asked Amy.
“Please watch your mouth when you speak to our daughter,” Amy’s dad said.
“Your daughter has been playing me all along with my father!” Arthur snapped.
“Arthur, that’s enough!” Gina snapped.
“How are you defending Amy? I’m your blood,” Arthur said.
“I’ve had enough of this. Arthur, your father isn’t dating your girlfriend,” Arthurs’s mum said.
“So you’re also defending him?” He asked.
“No, I’m telling the truth. I think it’s time everyone knew this,” She replied.
“I’ll say it myself,” His dad interrupted.
Arthur looked at his father angrily, waiting to hear what lie he would come up with.
“I’m not dating your girlfriend, Arthur. We met at the restaurant because she spotted me on Friday with my boyfriend,” He said.
“With your what?” Arthur asked in surprise.
“I met up with Amy to talk. She was trying to convince me to come out, especially to you guys,” His dad said.
“Then how come Mum knew?” Arthur asked.
‘I’ve always had my suspicions. Imagine the relief I felt when I realized I wasn’t the problem in our marriage,” She said with a smile.
“You were the problem but let’s not change the subject,” His dad replied.
Arthur felt like a fool. He was so scared of his parents embarrassing him during the gathering; instead, he embarrassed himself and Amy.
“Amy, I…” He said, but before he could finish, she had already stood up and walked away.
As he attempted to go after her, Gina stopped him and went instead.
Arthur turned to her parents, who were disappointed in him by their facial expressions. He sat down and hoped she would return with Gina so he could apologize. His parents, who were still seated, didn’t say a word. The whole night was already too overwhelming.
