“So how has married life been for you bro?” George asked.

David took a minute to reflect on his marriage which was now a month old. Melissa was the most amazing wife. She was beautiful, smart and a great cook as well. He loved her but he didn’t feel like he was in love with her.

“Earth to David,” George said as he snapped his fingers In front of David’s face.

“It’s been great I guess,” David said.

“You don’t sound so sure about that,” George said.

“I need to use the restroom; I’ll be right back,” David said as he stood up and walked away.

On his way back, he bumped into a guy.

“I’m sorry about that,” David said as the man turned and faced him.

“David King?” The man said as he smiled.

“Yes, that’s me,” David replied with a polite smile.

“G this is thee, David King! The famous author.” The guy said to a woman standing behind him.

David stretched his neck a bit and looked at the woman. The first thing he noticed was her smile. She had the kind of smile that deserved to be on a toothpaste commercial.

“Hello, my name is Gina.” She said as she reached out her hand to greet him.

David reached out his hand and greeted her.

“So, David? Are you here on your own?” The guy asked while looking around.

“No, my friend and I decided to have lunch here,” David said while still staring at Gina.

“Could we join you guys? I have realized that it is very hard to find a table here.” The guy said.

“Yeah sure, the more the merrier,” David said as he led the way back to where George was sitting.

“George, this is Gina and her boyfriend,” David said.

“Kevin is my childhood friend,” Gina said as she extended her hand to greet George.

Gina and Kevin sat on one side of the booth and George and David sat on the other. A waiter approached and placed some food on the table.

“Sorry man, I had already ordered our food,” George said.

“It’s cool, would you guys like to order?” David said as he looked at Kevin and Gina.

“I would like the chicken salad please,” Gina said as she handed Kevin the menu.

“I’m sorry we just served our last plate of the chicken salad would you like to order something else?” The waiter asked.

David looked at his food and realized he had the last plate of the chicken salad.

“That’s okay, you can have my plate.” He said as he pushed the plate slightly towards her.

“Thank you,” Gina said as she smiled at David.

“Is the game about to start by the way?” George asked as he glanced at his watch.

“Yes, in about thirty minutes or so,” Kevin said.

“Is there a table next to the screen?” George asked the waiter.

“Yes, would you like me to direct you?” The waiter asked.

“Yeah, that would be great. David, are you cool staying here, I know you’re not much of a football fan.” George asked.

“Yeah, it’s cool,” David said.

“Gina, you’ll be okay here with David? I kind of want to watch the game as well.” Kevin said.

“Yeah sure, you go ahead Kev,” Gina said with a smile.

Kevin and George left with the waiter. David focused his attention on Gina. He hadn’t met a woman as stunning as her. Her hair was perfectly tied back. Her face was spotless, with very minimal makeup.

“Are you going to order something else?” Gina asked.

David was still fixated on her beauty that he didn’t even hear the question.

“David?” She called out his name.

“Yes? What was the question?” David responded as he snapped back into reality.

Gina laughed as she picked up a fork to start eating. David who was still mesmerized by her smile continued to stare at her.

“Do you see anything you like?” She asked.

“Yes, plenty.” He responded without a moment of thought.

“Okay, would you like to order then?” Gina said.

David who was so smitten by Gina did not notice that the waiter had come back and was standing waiting for his order.

“Yes, I will have the mushroom fries.” He said handing the waiter the menu back.

“Do you always zone out while people are talking?” Gina asked.

“Only when they are as beautiful as you.” He responded quickly.

“Okay, smooth talker,” Gina said with a smile.

The rest of the afternoon David and Gina spent time talking and getting to know each other. David couldn’t believe that he had met a woman as amazing as Gina. She was not only beautiful but, she listened to him and she was interested in his work. It had been a long time since anyone had paid attention to him like this.

A while later, Kevin and George came back.

“Ready to go?” George asked me.

“Can I talk to you for a minute?” David responded as he stood up.

“Yeah sure,” George responded.

“We’ll be right back,” David said to Gina.

David and George walked toward the restrooms.

“So, I want to spend more time with Gina,” David said.

“Are you sure this is the road you would like to take Dave?” George asked.

“I’m just going to talk with her that’s all,” David responded.

“This isn’t fair to Melissa and you know I suck at keeping secrets,” George said.

“Melissa and I have been going through a rough patch,” David said while crossing his arms.

“But she’s your wife and you made a vow to be with her through everything,” George said.

“I know man,” David responded.

“Just don’t do something you will end up regretting,” George said.

“I won’t, let’s head back,” David said.

David and George walked back to the table.

“I think I’m going to head out. It was nice meeting you guys.” George said as he picked up his jacket.

“I also want to head out, Gina you’ll take a cab yeah?” Kevin said as he looked at Gina.

” I don’t mind dropping her,” David said with a smile.

Kevin and George turned to leave. George looked back and pointed at David as though he was signalling him to remember their conversation.

“So, are you willing to sabotage your marriage?” Gina asked taking David by surprise.

“How did you know I was married?” David asked looking at his finger that didn’t have a ring.

“You forget that you’re a celebrity around here?” Gina said to him with a shy smile.

David had often forgotten that he was famous. That his life was always made known to the public.

“I married her because she was the perfect fit for my perfect life,” David said as he sighed.

“Don’t you think that she would have also wanted to be with someone she loved?” She asked.

David hadn’t once thought about how the situation was also affecting Melissa. Their wedding and marriage were planned and she also missed out on a chance to meet someone she cared about.

“I guess I hadn’t thought about it,” David said after a moment of thought.

“Go home and be with her, you might learn to love her,” Gina said as she stood up.

“In your view, if I wasn’t married would we have been a good fit though?” David asked as he gathered his things.

“You would have been the man of my dreams.” She said smiling.

David escorted Gina to the entrance of the restaurant and waited for her to request an Uber before he left. Later that night, David turned to face his wife who was sleeping soundly. He reminisced about his day with Gina and the conversation they had. He wasn’t a believer in love at first sight but he knew that Gina was the woman his heart longed to be with. However, he decided to take her advice and work on loving the woman he had married. At that moment, he hoped that whoever she ended up with would love her as much as he wanted to love her.
