My ex-boyfriend was a master of deception. He made me believe that he was a saint when in reality he was the worst person I had ever dated. He always swore that he would never cheat on me yet I caught him flirting with other women on several occasions. Still, I stayed with him because I chose to believe the lies. It was only when I caught him in bed with another woman that my eyes finally opened.
One of my biggest fears is getting cheated on. I have experienced it in the past and it almost broke me. I swore that I would never date again and stayed single for a whole year until I met Brian.
Interestingly, I didn’t like his personality when we first met. I should have trusted my instinct and stayed away from him. However, he pursued me relentlessly, which made me think that he would be loyal to me. I would say he forced his way into my life. We met at a party but I ended up going home alone that night. Before leaving, Brian insisted that I should give him my number.
“Can I have your number so we can keep in touch?” He asked.
“I’m usually busy. I hardly reply to messages or answer calls.” I answered.
“It’s okay. I just want your number.”
He pleaded his case and I gave in just so that I could leave the party since it was getting late. The following day, he texted me that he was in my area.
“I’m not at home,” I replied.
“Tell me when you come back.”
He stayed around for hours until I came back and invited him to my house. I felt uneasy since I had only met him once. I also wasn’t ready to be intimate with anyone and I thought he would try to have his way with me. However, Brian assured me that he simply wanted to get to know me. He kept his word and after hanging out for a few hours, he left.
I had never met anyone like him before. Most guys wouldn’t drive to a girl’s house, wait for hours then leave without trying to sleep with them. I thought he was a strange guy since he never even talked about relationships or love. However, I liked that he was different. Anytime we hung out, he would bring something for me.
Brian consistently made me feel like the most beautiful woman in the world. He showered me with gifts, and compliments. Most importantly, he made me feel secure and I didn’t have to worry about another woman ruining our relationship. We kept hanging out and after three months, we officially started dating.
“Brian really loves you.” One of my friends said to me.
“He does. I’ve never felt this happy in my life.”
“You deserve it.”
For the first few months, the relationship was perfect. Brian did everything he could to make me happy and I thought that nothing could go wrong. I let my guard down and didn’t see the obvious signs that he had another woman.
Brian became a regular at my place and people including my neighbours and cleaner knew him more than they knew me. I didn’t think it was unusual since he was a social guy and made friends easily. However, he started inquiring about my neighbour out of the blue. I knew my neighbour and I thought she wasn’t a threat. She had a child and Brian told me he would date a woman with a child.
“Do you know the woman who lives in the apartment opposite you?” He asked.
“I’ve seen her a few times but I don’t know much about her. Why are you asking?”
“Nothing. I’ve been seeing her around every time I come to your place.”
“She has a child.” I said.
“I know. I’ve seen her with her son.”
She started interacting with me every time we bumped into each other. However, she would give me an evil look whenever I bumped into her with Brian. I didn’t confront her about it since I thought she was just jealous of my relationship. Things only got worse after that. I found out that she was talking to Brian over the phone. Again, this wasn’t an issue but her attitude towards me raised some questions.
She went from being friendly to being rude yet we hadn’t argued. In fact, I barely talked to her. I suspected that it had something to do with Brian. He was handsome and charming so it was natural for a woman like her to have a crush on him. However, I wouldn’t have thought that Brian would be attracted to her much less cheating on me with her.
We started experiencing relationship problems a few months after we started dating and Brian would always bring up my neighbour when we argued.
“Why do you always talk about that woman?”
“She’s a good woman and she respects me unlike you.”
“How did I disrespect you?”
“When I met you, you were an insecure woman. Now you think you’re the queen of the world.”
Whenever I confronted him about my neighbour, he would turn it on me and gaslight me. It became pointless to ask him so I decided to let it go. Brian must have taken my silence for ignorance and he didn’t even try to hide it anymore. Whenever my neighbour called, they would talk for almost an hour. Still, I thought it was just innocent flirting and that he would stop once we solved our relationship problems.
My cleaner warned me that my neighbour had started visiting my house when I wasn’t around but I brushed her off. I chose to bury my head in the sand since I hadn’t caught them red-handed.
However, I came home early one day and I caught my boyfriend in bed with my neighbour. They both dressed up without saying anything as if I wasn’t there.
“What’s going on?” I finally asked.
“What do you think?” My neighbour answered.
“How could you do this to me, Brian?”
We got into an argument which escalated into a physical fight. Brain landed the first blow which disoriented me. When I realized what had happened, I was on the ground and both of them were kicking me. I tried to defend myself but I was overpowered. I screamed which alerted my other neighbours who came to my rescue.
The police came and arrested both of them. I went to the hospital. I later dropped the charges after Brian apologized and promised to stay away from me.
I’ve never been able to fully trust anyone after that experience. Brian proved that the people who seem like they’re the best can, in fact, be the worst.
