My friendship with Linda started so unexpectedly. We met at a company event and after a brief conversation, we realized we had a lot in common. Linda wasn’t the kind of girl I thought I could ever be friends with. She was a good-looking girl with a lot going on for her. I, on the other hand, am just average. Nonetheless, we stayed in touch and she became a good friend of mine ever since that day.
It wasn’t just her looks, Linda had a thing about her that made you want to be around her. She was delightful which was probably the reason we sparked up a conversation and became inseparable. The first time she came to visit me at my office, she brought the whole office to a standstill and everyone wanted to talk to her.
It wasn’t uncommon for her to get all the attention whenever we were together. I was okay with the attention she got since most of the guys that were attracted to her weren’t my type anyway. However, I finally met someone I liked and he asked me out on a date.
“I want to know more about you. Can we go for dinner sometime?” He asked.
“Yes, only if I can bring my friend.”
“Of course. You can bring anyone you like, even your mum.”
Moses was a lot like Linda. He was good-looking and charming. I was even surprised that he approached me. That is why I wanted to bring Linda along since I thought she would be a good wing woman and I wouldn’t feel so intimidated. I wasn’t worried that Linda would steal all the attention from me since Moses seemed like he was genuinely interested in me. Additionally, I thought Linda was a good friend and wouldn’t try to get his attention.
“I met this amazing guy yesterday,” I said to Linda.
“Really? That’s great. What is he like?”
“He’s a lot like you, actually. I told him I’ll bring you along for our date since you’re more social than I am. Do you mind coming with me to the date?” I asked.
Linda laughed. It was an unusual request especially since I knew that she was more attractive than me but as I said, I was sure that Moses was a genuine guy and wouldn’t be swayed by looks. After asking repeatedly if I thought it was a good idea, Linda finally agreed.
“Okay, but I won’t stay for long. I want you to enjoy yourself.”
“Thank you. I’ll pass by your place and pick you up.”
The weekend came and I got ready for the date and then went to pick up Linda. She looked so stunning that I had to make her change her outfit. I may have been comfortable with her getting attention but it was my day and I wanted to be the center of attention for once.
After getting a less flattering outfit, we headed to the date where Moses was already waiting for us. I walked in first and Linda followed closely behind. Moses didn’t see her at first but as soon as she made her way to the table, his facial expression changed. He looked like he had seen an angel. I understood the reaction but I didn’t expect it from him.
“Linda, this is Moses.”
“Charity is really fond of you. What did you do to her?” She asked then laughed.
“Nothing, really. We just met recently.” He answered.
It felt like he was brushing me off but I didn’t want to overthink things and ruin the date. However, after that reception, I didn’t have a lot of expectations about the date. I simply wanted to have fun. Things continued to go south. Moses didn’t say much to me and was more focused on talking to Linda. She tried her best to divert the attention to me but it didn’t work. It was like he was hypnotized by Linda.
Finally, he asked something related to me but it still came off as offensive.
“So, how did a girl like you become friends with Charity?” He asked.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” I asked, slightly irritated.
“We work in the same company,” Linda answered.
“I need to visit that company if they have beautiful girls like you.”
I grabbed Linda and dragged her to the washroom so I could tell her to leave. However, she had other plans.
“I’m having a good time. Why would I leave?”
“I’m not having a good time. You’re supposed to be my wingwoman but you’re flirting with my date.”
“I’m not flirting with him. He’s flirting with me and if I leave, I don’t think he’ll stick around.”
No matter how hard I tried, Linda refused to leave so we went back to our table and they continued flirting as I ate my dinner quietly. I tried getting Moses’ attention but he was too focused on Linda. After finishing my dinner, I left them at the restaurant and went back home.
Linda tried to call me later and when I didn’t pick up, she sent me a text asking where I was.
“How could you leave me at the restaurant? I thought you went to the washroom. Anyway, Moses is taking me home.” She wrote.
I didn’t know whether she was intentionally trying to rub it in but it seemed like she was. It was the worst betrayal I ever experienced from a friend.
Linda and I have been friends for years and I didn’t think that she would do something like that to me. I was never envious of her good looks but after that day, I couldn’t stand seeing her walking around the office. Our friendship ended shortly after that but we reconciled later when she and Moses broke up. She needed a shoulder to cry on and I couldn’t sit by and watch her suffer. She promised never to do anything like that and so far, she has stuck to her word.
