When people say they’ve ended a relationship, when is that choice definitive? Does the relationship end as soon as the words are said, or is there a window that determines the finality of that decision? Well, Martin was of the school of thought that it ends as soon as the words are uttered. He had a reason to think that way. Anita, however, missed the finality aspect when Martin ended their relationship.
They had been dating for eight months before Martin ended things. Anita had complained that he had changed. He had stopped being romantic, and their communication felt one-sided. Martin blamed it on work, the gym, and anything else he could think of to avoid meeting her or having lengthy conversations. He wasn’t rude to her but was also not as warm as he used to be.
At first, Anita thought it was a rough patch they could overcome, but Martin became more withdrawn from her. Eventually, he pulled the plug. They were supposed to go on a date when he called.
“Hey Anita,” said Martin.
“Hey, babe. I’m about to head to the shower so that I don’t keep you waiting,” Anita responded.
“Actually, I was calling about that. I don’t think I’ll make it. Sorry,” said Martin.
“Again? I’ve lost count of the times you’ve cancelled on me recently. I feel I’m the only one fighting for this relationship, Martin,” Anita told him.
“I have been busy and I don’t think this relationship is going to work,” Martin said.
“Are you breaking up with me?” Anita asked.
“I think it’s the best thing to do,” said Martin.
Anita texted and tried calling him hours after the call, but the messages went unread, and the calls unanswered. She went to social media to find out more about Martin. He had no social media accounts, but his friends were active. She was able to spot Martin at his friend’s place. It hurt her because he had lied that he was busy.
That prompted her to dig deeper. Like a person who has watched enough investigative shows, she went through the tagged names and the people who had interacted with Martin’s friend’s post. She couldn’t find anything particular on that friend’s socials, so she checked Martin’s other friends’ profiles.
After hours and hours of online stalking, she found a picture on a girl’s profile. She’s followed the trail to the girl’s profile from Martin’s female friend. The ‘mystery’ girl was a friend to Martin’s female friend. The picture contained an image of the girl’s hand on top of a man’s hand. She was ‘soft-launching’ the man from the details in her caption and the subsequent comments. The picture caught Anita’s attention because she knew Martin’s hand too well. He also had his watch in the photo, and the mole on the side of his middle finger was visible.
Anita suddenly had a strange feeling in her stomach. She studied every inch of that girl’s profile. It led to the discovery that Martin had been dating that girl for two months. Martin’s friends had been interacting with the girl’s posts, so they were aware of the relationship. She felt like a fool. That was when Martin started acting weirdly, and she put more effort into the relationship.
It was around 10 p.m. when she pieced the details together. She paced in her house in anger. Finally, she decided to confront Martin. He hadn’t opened her messages or called back, so she went to him. She knew his friend’s house because he lived in the same estate. She rang the doorbell at Martin’s friend’s house. He opened the door.
“I need to talk to Martin,” Anita told Martin’s friend.
“There’s someone for you, Martin,” said his friend, tactfully avoiding mentioning it was Anita because Martin’s new girl was in the house with them.
“Someone? Now you don’t know my name?” Anita asked Martin’s friend.
“Sorry. He’s busy. Could you wait for him outside there?” Asked Martin’s friend.
An angry Anita took a step back. Martin’s friend closed the door. She waited ten minutes, but Martin didn’t leave the house. She felt more humiliated, which made her angrier. She walked to Martin’s house. She knew where he put his spare key and got inside. The first thing that caught her eye was a pair of heels near the door. She guessed they belonged to Martin’s new girlfriend. She took the heels and threw them at Martin’s TV. It cracked. She continued hitting the screen in anger. Soon, she was breaking anything she could, including the coffee glass table, his glass dining table, and the flower vase on top of it.
Martin’s neighbour heard the commotion and texted Martin. “Are you having a party or something?”
“Bro, I’m not in the house. Why?” Martin responded.
“There’s definitely somebody in the house. There are noises coming from inside,” the neighbour responded.
Martin left his friend’s house and headed to his place. His new girlfriend and friend followed him. They arrived in time to see Anita leave Martin’s house with a golf club. She went straight to Martin’s car, which was outside. She hit his windshield.
“Anita, stop it!” Martin shouted.
“Oh, you care about your car but could not show me that concern when you were humiliating me?” Anita shouted back angrily and continued hitting the car.
“Anita, come on,” Martin pleaded.
“Don’t come close to me, Martin,” Anita told him as she pointed the golf club at him.
A crowd was forming outside. Some neighbours were watching the drama from their windows. Eventually, the estate security guards were able to contain Anita. When she was done causing the damage, she sat down and wept. She narrated her story to some people in the crowd as she pointed at Martin and his new girlfriend. Martin reported the matter to the police. Anita was forced to pay for the damages.
Even though Martin got paid for the damages, he also lost his new girlfriend. The girl didn’t know that Martin had been cheating on Anita. He had told her that he was single. The judgemental eyes from the neighbours when Anita was causing the chaos also made her resent Martin for making her ‘the other woman’. Anita eventually moved on and regretted her actions. The bills she had to pay were a significant lesson in managing anger.
