Her hands were trembling. She felt like she could explode from the anger she felt. Her husband sat ninety degrees from her position, waiting expectantly for her answer. Ivy could feel tears flooding her eyes, but they were tears of anger. She opened her mouth, trying to vocalize her thoughts, but couldn’t find the right words. One more look at Larry triggered intrusive thoughts. She first thought of choking him, then imagined she lacked enough strength for that.
A touch on her hand brought her back to reality. She pushed away the hand and stood. Her face couldn’t hide the disgust.
“Do not put your filthy hands on me, Larry.”
“I’m sorry,” said Larry.
“What are you sorry for? You forgot about your family for months when you were with that woman, and now you want my help? I begged you to put your family first, but you said I’m not a man so that I wouldn’t understand. Look at the mess you have caused,” Ivy told Larry.
“I know what I did was bad, but this is not the time to recap the past. I need you to stand by me and use your influence so that I can win the election, and we’ll have a chance of retaining our home,” Larry told her.
“Did you not know you wanted to be the MCA and what it meant for your business when you were running around with your mistress? You also gambled with our home, where your children live, and didn’t bother to tell me, but now that things have gone south, you want me to get involved? Ivy shouted angrily at him.
“It’s your home, too, Ivy. It was a bad business decision. You know I have taken out more business loans, and it worked out,” Larry defended himself.
“My home? My home, Larry? Didn’t you threaten to leave me for her and kick me out? Do you think I have forgotten?” Ivy replied.
“Ivy, that is in the past. I’m sorry for any pain I may have caused you. I am done with her now, and I need you now. Please don’t turn your back on me,” Larry begged.
Ivy walked out of the dining room. She went to the guest bedroom, where she had been sleeping for months. She held a pillow and cried her heart out. She was thankful that her children were not home, so she didn’t have to suppress her feelings and put on a brave face for them. Larry had done a number on her. She would never have imagined that he would cause her this much pain.
When they met, Larry was starting his career. He’d always been ambitious and planned to use his salary to set up a business. Ivy had been his supportive partner and even took out loans for him to help with capital for his ventures. He’d always paid her back. Eventually, when the business was on its feet, Larry quit his job to get into business full-time. Everything was great, and he even managed to build a huge mansion for them in a good neighbourhood.
Then Larry did business with politicians and their associates, which planted a seed in him; he wanted to be his area’s MCA. He laid out the plans. There wasn’t much competition, but the voters were conservatives who held up family values. The voting block was also primarily women.
As he was setting up his campaign, the snake showed up with an apple, and just like Eve, he couldn’t fight the temptation. He started having an affair with a young girl who’d just finished university. Claire, the mistress, excited him so much that he started neglecting his duties as a father and husband. He claimed to have been in love with her and even threatened to kick out Ivy if she complained about Claire again.
He spared no expense to show Claire a good time. They had agreed to keep the affair a secret from the public until he went into office. Larry overcompensated for keeping a secret with monetary rewards. During the period of the affair, Larry took out a huge business loan and used his home and other assets as collateral, but this time, things didn’t pan out. His industry took a hit, and his business suffered large losses.
Additionally, Claire found out she was pregnant. After discussing the matter, they agreed the timing was wrong and decided to terminate the pregnancy. They were okay as a couple for a few more weeks before the effects of the business situation started affecting their relationship. Larry couldn’t afford to give Claire the lifestyle he had introduced her to. Claire threw tantrums frequently, and it got to Larry. He eventually decided to break up with her.
She did not take it well and threatened to go on social media and tell the world that he had forced her to have an abortion, and it had caused complications. Claire had manipulated some of the messages between them to paint a picture of him taking advantage of her and discarding her. She blackmailed him with this and asked for a huge amount of money.
Larry was desperate with his financial situation; he needed to win the MCA seat, but such a scandal would kill any chance of winning. His wife, Ivy, had social capital in the area and could sway the voters. He also hoped that Ivy would help save the house from being auctioned. He’d thought of asking her to help pay Claire off, but he had a little amount of shame left, so he did that and made her sign an NDA.
He was aware that although he could go after Claire legally if she leaked the false story, he wouldn’t survive in the court of public opinion. This was how he ended up begging Ivy for her help. Ivy couldn’t believe he had asked for her help after everything he had put her through. She had half a mind to leave him with his problems and start afresh elsewhere, but she decided to turn the situation to her advantage.
“I will have my lawyer draw up papers for you to sign, but I’ll stick around under several conditions,” Ivy told Larry.
“Anything you want, dear,” Larry told her.
“Don’t dear me. This is a business arrangement. If I help you maintain or restore your image for your political gain, I will gain from it. I also never want to hear about your small girls because you can’t even run a tight ship with them. I’ll have the details sent over,” Ivy told him.
Larry had gotten the help, but he would pay a hefty price. He didn’t expect Ivy to be that cutthroat but was desperate.
