George and I agreed to keep our relationship low-key until we were ready. We had only been dating for a few weeks and we thought it was too early to formalize our relationship since we weren’t sure how people would take the news, especially his sister. She was my best friend and I knew she wouldn’t be happy that I was dating her brother but she was bound to find out sooner or later.
At first, I was okay with being his secret girlfriend. We used to sneak around when we were around his sister or our friends and it was exciting. However, George started taking advantage of the situation. He would flirt with other girls and then claim that he has to make his friends believe that he is single. After a few months, I wanted to make our relationship official.
“I think it’s time we make the next step.” I said to him.
“Which one?”
“It’s time to tell everyone we’re in a relationship.”
“I don’t think that’s a good idea.”
“Why?”
“You’re my sister’s best friend. You know how she is about her friends dating me.”
“I think she’ll be happy since I’m her best friend.”
“Let’s wait a little longer.”
“I’m not waiting any longer,” I yelled. “If you don’t tell her, I will.”
My main issue wasn’t his sister. I knew that she would be understanding and happy that her brother had finally settled with a good girl even if it happened to be her best friend. I wanted George to make our relationship public because he had a couple of girls who were getting out of line.
George was a certified lover boy. Before we got into a relationship, he could barely stay with one girl for more than two weeks. He also had a lot of female friends. He reduced his habit when we got into a relationship but it seemed like he was going back to his old ways. Apart from flirting with girls in front of me, they would exchange numbers and chat over the phone. This irked me the most since he had no reason to talk to girls when he wasn’t with his friends.
“I’ll tell my sister that we’re dating but I think we should wait to tell my friends. I don’t want them to spoil what we have.” He said.
It was a good start so I agreed. The next time we met, he told his sister.
“I have something to tell you.” He started. “Sandra and I are dating.”
There was a long silence and I could see the look of disbelief on his sister’s face.
“How long have you been dating?” She asked.
“A few months.”
“Months? I thought you were my best friend. How could you hide something like this from me?”
“We wanted to make sure that it was something serious before telling anyone.”
“Does anyone else know?”
“Not yet,” I answered.
Sandra was surprisingly fine with it which made me hopeful about our relationship.
“You better not hurt my best friend.” She said and we all burst into laughter.
“I would never,” George replied.
After that, we slowly broke the news to everyone we knew. Most of our friends knew that we were in a relationship and they seemed happy about it.
“Our boy is finally settling down.” One of them said.
“Yeah, it’s about time.”
Even his female friends didn’t have an issue with me. I thought I could finally relax and enjoy my relationship but I was in for a rude awakening. George hadn’t told everybody that we were in a relationship. There was a specific girl who I hadn’t met in person but she kept in touch with George. When I asked his friends who she was, they told me that she was his ex. However, they seemed pretty close for exes.
They talked on a daily basis but every time, George conveniently forgot to tell her about our relationship. It was becoming a problem so I decided to tell her myself.
“I want to meet this girl that you always talk to.”
“She’s just a friend. There’s no reason for you to meet her.”
“If you’re just friends then you have nothing to worry about.”
“Fine. You can meet her. I haven’t seen her in a while anyway.”
George arranged a date for me to meet her. We went for a lunch date and it was the most awkward lunch I have ever had. She didn’t know that I was going to be there because George didn’t tell her. So, we sat in silence for some time. Finally, George broke the ice.
“It’s nice to see you again, Jane.” He said.
They talked for some time as if I wasn’t there and I had to interrupt them since I felt like a third wheel while I was with my boyfriend.
“I’ve heard a lot about you,” I said to her.
“Oh, who are you?” She asked rudely.
“She’s my sister’s best friend,” George said.
“Really? Your sister’s best friend?”
“Yes, let’s not do this right now.”
“If you can’t tell her who I am, I don’t want to be in a relationship with you anymore.”
“You’re in a relationship with him?” Jane interrupted.
“Yes, we’ve been dating for a few months now.”
“Wow. You’re still the same old person that you used to be.” She laughed.
I knew exactly what she meant but I wanted to hear it from the horse’s mouth.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“He has been texting and calling me for months asking if I can take him back.”
I knew that George liked to flirt with other women but I didn’t think that he could take it that far. He promised both me and his sister that he would behave himself and I trusted him. However, my eyes opened that day and I realized that he would never change.
We broke up that same day. I tried to stay friends with his sister but our friendship was never the same again. We didn’t meet or talk as much as we did and eventually, I stopped talking to her too.
