During my early twenties, there was nothing more I wanted than a solid female friend. That one person I could always confide in and have fun with as well. Having male friends was amazing but it wasn’t the same as having a sisterhood. When I met Mercy, I was so overjoyed. She was kind, fun, and understanding and we connected after just one conversation. Most importantly she never tried to hit on my boyfriend, which was interesting given that I met her through him.
David and Mercy were in the same friend group, so they hang out regularly. With time I also became part of the group but the other women didn’t seem that interested in me. My friendship with Mercy became stronger in a short period. During weekends, if I was not with David, you would always find me with her. We would either go clubbing or spend time at home watching movies. I loved talking to Mercy and sharing things with her since she felt more like a sister than a friend.
After a year of getting to know each other, Mercy asked if she could move in with me. She had been struggling to pay her bills and living alone had become a problem. Since I spent most of my time at David’s I didn’t mind. On the day she moved in, I realized she didn’t have much which made me feel bad. So, I offered to pay rent for a couple of months so she could stabilize.
The next couple of months went smoothly which was a relief for me. I had always had the impression that living with a friend would be hectic, but Mercy was great. Since she knew I liked cleanliness she was always on top of things. We had made a roaster to make it easier to alternate duties and it worked from the first day. She was also a great cook and would offer to cook most of the time. This made me extremely happy because I hated cooking.
Things were going so well that at some point I ended up spending more time with her than with David. To make it up to him, I decided to stay at his place for one week. The first few days were good to the point that I didn’t even check up on Mercy. At the end of the week though, I ended up getting a call from her.
“Hey Mercy. Is everything okay?” I asked.
“Last night there was a robbery,” She replied.
“Oh no! Are you okay?” I asked.
“Yeah, they didn’t hurt me, but they stole your laptop along with a couple of other items. I’m so sorry,” She responded.
“It’s not your fault, as long as you’re okay that’s all that matters,” I reassured her.
“Okay, I just wanted to let you know,” She said.
“Thank you. I’ll talk to you tomorrow,” I replied.
When I hang up, I didn’t even think about my laptop or the things that were missing. All I could imagine was what if they had stabbed or shot Mercy? That incident made me uneasy for the rest of the day. When David got home, he noticed my mood and so I told him the story.
“Did she explain to you how the incident happened?” He asked.
“No, and I didn’t ask. She was alone in the house and was robbed,” I responded.
“I think you should have still asked for the full story. Your laptop and other belongings which you don’t know about are missing,” He said.
“Is there something you know that I don’t? My best friend was robbed, she could have lost her life. I’ll find out more details when I go back. For now, I just want her to rest,” I said.
David didn’t say a word after that. The following morning, I decided to go back home to be with Mercy. My tendency to overthink had overwhelmed me and it was the only way I could feel at peace. To make her feel better, I decided to do some shopping and buy her favourite snacks. The moment I got home, I received a text from David reminding me to ask Mercy about the story.
I rolled my eyes, set my bags down and went over to my room to see her. She was busy texting but the moment she saw me she quickly got out of bed and jumped to hug me. It was odd that she was so happy given what she had gone through, but I didn’t mind. Once I settled down, she told me she had a date which was why she was overjoyed.
I watched her get ready for her date and forgot to ask her about the robbery. After she left, I thought about calling David, but he would have just annoyed me. The following morning, I heard a knock on the door.
“ David? What are you doing here?” I asked.
“I came to talk. You didn’t text me back so I thought it would be better for me to come,” He replied.
“Okay, would you like to come inside?” I asked.
“Actually, can we just talk outside?” He said.
I gave him a small nod before heading back inside to change my clothes.
“Should we go for a walk? Mercy is still sleeping,” I replied.
David’s mood shifted when I mentioned her name, but I decided to ignore it.
“Did you ask her about the robbery?” David asked softly.
“I didn’t get the chance to,” I replied quickly.
“I feel like you should know the whole story,” He said in a concerned tone.
“Why are you insisting on this story?” I asked.
“I’m just looking out for you. Isn’t this story a bit strange?” He asked.
“No,” I said.
“When you got home, did she even talk about the robbery? Did she inform the police?” He asked.
“I didn’t ask,” I replied.
“Mercy is playing some kind of game with you. If she was genuinely robbed then she would have made an effort to do something,” He said.
“I’m so tired of this conversation,” I replied.
“How are you defending someone you’ve known for just a year?” He asked.
“David stop it! What’s done is done. Reporting the incident won’t get me my things back,” I snapped.
“You should be careful with Mercy,” He replied.
“I’m so done with this conversation. Go home David once you decide to drop this conversation you can call me,” I said as I faced away from him.
“Don’t say I didn’t warn you,” He said before leaving.
As I walked back to the house, I thought about the things he had said and the Mercy I knew. There was no way she was hiding anything from me. She was my best friend and roommate, why would she do anything to hurt me?
“I’m not going to let him get to my head,” I thought to myself before entering the house.
The next few days, David didn’t call or text me which made me feel bad. However, I knew he would start the robbery story again so I didn’t call him either. Sensing my mood, Mercy offered me a shoulder to lean on and I explained to her what happened.
” Maybe it’s time you let the relationship go,” She told me and I listened to her.
I sent David a lengthy text expressing my disappointment and set him free. He didn’t respond to the paragraph, instead, he reminded me to stay on guard with Mercy.
Normally, it would take me time to start dating again after a relationship, but this time was different. A month later, I was already seeing someone new. This time I figured things would be easier since Mercy had set me up. Unfortunately, this new relationship revealed the truth most shockingly.
James and I dated for a while and like most couples we had fights. On one occasion, we had a bad disagreement that caused us to take a break for two weeks. James then reached out and asked me to go over to his place so we could fix our issues.
When I arrived, I texted him to open the door but he didn’t respond. Luckily, he always hid a spare key outside, so I let myself in and waited for him in the living room. Immediately I sat down, I noticed his phone on the table. Normally I wasn’t one to snoop but given the number of texts that were popping up, I decided to check.
James used the same passcode for everything so unlocking his phone wasn’t an issue. All the texts were from Mercy and checking her profile photo I realized it wasn’t the same number I had. As I scrolled, I remembered David warning me about her and wished I had listened.
Mercy and James were not only having sex behind my back, but they had been together long before I knew him. To add salt to injury, he was the one who was helping her to sell my things including my laptop. I sent screenshots to my phone, dashed out of the house and took an Uber home.
The moment I opened the door, I broke down and wished I could call David. He was the only person who could make me feel better but given how I had treated him that wasn’t an option. I didn’t even care that much about James lying to me but Mercy? A woman I had welcomed into my heart? It was too much to bear.
I sat on the floor and tried to piece together what had happened. James sent countless texts but I couldn’t respond. The following day, I wrote him a paragraph informing him that I knew the truth.
As the days went by, I thought about reporting the matter to the police. Unfortunately, my decision to tell James the truth made it easier for him and Mercy to escape. Since she still had the key to my place, she came and collected her stuff while I was at work.
