The Singlehood Series: She Ordered Expensive Food And Wine Then Spent The Whole Date On Her Phone

I knew I was in trouble when she came to the date in a skirt so short I could see her underwear.

One of the proudest moments of my life was when I asked a girl who was way out of my league for her number and she gave it to me. Her name was Diana and I met her at the airport when I was coming back from a work trip. We were both waiting for our bags which had been delayed for almost an hour already. She kept checking her phone frantically and paced around looking for her bag. I was too entranced to care about my own bag. She was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen and I couldn’t keep my eyes off her. Eventually, I mastered the courage to talk to her as we waited for our bags.

“Can you believe how disorganized these people are?” I asked her, trying to start a conversation.

She turned and looked at me from head to toe. I thought she was going to ignore me but she smiled then started talking to me.

“I know. This is so annoying.” She answered in the sexiest accent I ever heard. It was a Kenyan accent but with a twist that I couldn’t get enough of.

“I’m Caleb.”

“Diana.” She said still keeping an eye out for her bag.

We chatted for another hour before she finally found her bag.

“Thanks for your company. Do you mind if I get your number?” I asked, handing her my phone.

She smiled again, then took my phone.

“You better call me.” She said.

“Definitely.” I tried to act cool but I was so excited.

I couldn’t wait to talk to her again. However, when I tried to call her that evening, she didn’t answer her phone. I tried several times but there was no response. Slightly disappointed, I tossed my phone on my coffee table and continued unpacking from the trip. When I returned to check my phone, I found a missed call and a message from Diana.

“Hi, sorry I missed your calls. I was taking a nap. I hope you got home safely.” The message read.

I didn’t waste any time calling her back.

“Hi.” She answered.

“Hi, beautiful lady. How was your nap?”

“It was good. I’m actually getting ready to go out. One of my friends invited me to a party. Do you want to come?”

“I can’t. I have a lot of work tomorrow. We can have dinner on Saturday though.”

“Okay. See you on Saturday.” She said then hung up.

To be honest, I didn’t think that she would agree to go out with me but I was happily surprised. The only issue was I didn’t have a lot of money in my account. I had spent so much on the trip shopping for myself and my family that I only had enough to get me through the month.

Nonetheless, I decided to spend the little that I had left on my gorgeous date since she was worth it. I made a reservation at one of my favourite restaurants and hoped that Diana would actually show up.

I arrived at the restaurant a bit early so I could calm my nerves with a glass of whiskey. Diana walked in thirty minutes after I arrived, wearing thigh-high boots and a mini dress so short I could see her black lace underwear when she sat down. Everyone stared at her as she strutted across the room and then came to where I was. I flashed a huge smile as everyone turned to look at me. I got up to hug her but she sat down without even acknowledging me, then removed her phone and started taking selfies.

“You look so good,” I said, trying to get her attention. “You’re causing a commotion.”

“I know.” She answered without looking away from her phone.

Her attitude was completely different from the woman I had met at the airport but I tried to be patient. After all, I was with a woman I never thought would look at me twice.

The commotion was over but I could still feel some people staring at me throughout the date. I’m sure they were wondering who this young man was to go on a date with such a beautiful woman. There was a particular group of men who couldn’t keep their eyes off us. I assumed they were having a business meeting because they were all dressed in suits and had a serious look on their faces. Still, they kept glancing at us which was quite intimidating.

“What do you want to eat?” I asked.

“Anything.”

“Here’s the menu.”

She didn’t look at the menu but when the waiter came, she was ready to order.

“I’ll have grilled lobster and a side of salad.”

“Excellent choice, ma’am. What will you have to drink?”

“Bring us a bottle of white wine.” She answered then went back to scrolling on her phone as I perused the menu trying to find the cheapest food.

I went for mashed potatoes and meatballs. Clearly, Diana wasn’t impressed by my order.

“What kind of man eats mashed potatoes?” She asked, still not looking away from her phone.

“I’m not really hungry.”

“How do you think it will make me look?”

“Don’t worry, I like a girl with an appetite.” I tried to joke but she didn’t think it was funny.

When our food came, she finally placed her phone down but barely talked to me. My questions only seemed to agitate her so I chose to keep quiet and let her lead the conversation. She didn’t say a word to me for the rest of the date and when she was down eating, she grabbed the bottle of wine and headed out. I knew that she had left but I stayed at the restaurant for another hour just so it wouldn’t seem so apparent that my date had walked out on me. I texted Diana just to confirm whether she was coming back.

“You didn’t seem happy on the date. Are you coming back or can we meet another day?” The message read.

While I was killing time and trying to adjust my budget for the rest of the month, Diana replied to my text.

“You’re not really my type. I just came for the free meal.” She said.

“I suspected that,” I replied.

It wasn’t the first time that a woman had used me for a free meal but this one bruised my ego. Maybe it was because I had high expectations of how the date would go or perhaps because I spent almost all the money I had left to impress a girl. Nonetheless, I learnt to stay in my lane and simply admire girls like Diana from afar.
