The first time Kevin and I talked was so awkward. He was a nervous mess and could barely make sensible sentences. One minute, he would talk about his favourite show, Brooklyn 99, and the next minute, he would talk about politics. Nonetheless, he captured my attention and I couldn’t focus on my favourite lecture. I found him more fascinating than whatever the lecturer was saying. He was trying to make the moves on me but I didn’t think that he would be my boyfriend. However, he changed my mind by the end of the day.
“Can I take you to your hostel?” He asked politely.
“Of course.”
When we got to the hostel, I didn’t want him to leave. We hugged for so long trying to prolong our time together. However, we had to say our goodbyes when darkness started to come.
We became inseparable after that day. He would always come to sit with me and walk me to my hostel every day. Somehow, I could listen to him talk all day and not get bored.
I didn’t even realize I was catching feelings for him until the day we kissed for the first time. He escorted me to my hostel as usual and we spent another hour talking outside the gate. When he was about to leave, he pulled me in. I thought he was reaching in for a hug but he looked me deep in my eyes and kissed me. I was shocked since I didn’t expect him to kiss me but I wasn’t complaining.
Once the shock wore off, I came back to my senses and realized that the kiss was not that good. It was a light kiss, nothing special, but it still made me giddy. Later that night, Kevin messaged me to ask me if I liked the kiss. Again, he had a talent of making things awkward.
“I liked it,” I replied.
“I didn’t know whether I crossed a line or not. You seemed scared.”
“I was definitely taken by surprise but I liked it.”
“Great. I’m happy to hear that. I wanted to ask you something else?”
“Sure.”
“Can I be your boyfriend?”
Shortly after, I received an audio message of him singing Justin Bieber’s Boyfriend in the worst voice I had ever heard. I couldn’t stop laughing. The man was a joker but he managed to make an impression on me so I didn’t hesitate to say yes.
When we met the following day, it was like he was a completely different guy. He seemed more serious. He even talked in a deeper, lower tone.
We went on our first date the same day after classes. He took me to a nice restaurant and we had a lovely dinner. While we were at the restaurant, it started raining which made the evening feel like a scene from a movie. Once the rain stopped, we went to his place and I spent the night there since the following day was a weekend.
Kevin woke me up the next day with breakfast in bed. We spent the whole day in bed talking about life. I planned on staying another night so we went to buy groceries and made dinner together. We stayed up watching episodes of his favourite show, Brooklyn 99, till late. It was a nearly perfect weekend and the perfect start to a relationship. I felt peaceful and safe around him.
However, that blissful moment was about to come to a messy end. I woke up the next morning to find Kevin sitting on the couch with a worried look on his face.
“Is everything okay?” I asked which startled him.
“Yeah, I’m good.” He answered.
I didn’t think much of it and went to the kitchen to make breakfast. Since I woke up late, I planned on having breakfast, taking a shower then heading back to my hostel. However, after taking a shower, Kevin pulled me back to bed and we cuddled the whole afternoon.
At around 6.00 pm, I started preparing to go back. Kevin was still acting strange but I brushed it off. It was only when I heard a loud knock on the door that I realized why he was pacing around and looking out the window.
“Who’s at the door?” I asked him.
“I don’t know.” He replied in a whisper.
Then, a woman called Kevin’s name and demanded that he open the door. She continued knocking for almost thirty minutes as Kevin tried to explain himself.
“It’s my ex.” He said.
“Then open the door.”
“She’s out of her mind.”
“It’s fine. Open the door.”
I wanted to hear from her what her relationship with Kevin was. Eventually, he opened the door and she stormed in.
“What are you doing here, Hellen?” He asked.
She ignored him and came to the bedroom where I was sitting on the bed. The moment she saw me, she burst into tears.
“How can you cheat on me, Kevin? We’ve been together for three years.”
I was silent as he tried to calm her down. She finally stopped crying but continued yelling at Kevin. Then she turned her attention to me.
“I have nothing against you but this man is my boyfriend.”
“I’m not your boyfriend. We broke up two months ago.”
“Two months ago? So, around the same time, you started talking to me?” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
We started questioning Kevin and realized that he was playing the both of us. He told me that he was single yet he was still talking to his alleged ex. Emotions were high but we managed to stay composed. I was surprised that his ex/girlfriend didn’t try to attack me. In fact, we started getting to know each other.
She even offered to give me a ride to my hostel since she had a car which I accepted. Kevin didn’t say much as we left. When we got to my hostel, we exchanged numbers and planned to meet soon for ice cream.
As planned, we met for ice cream where I explained how I met Kevin and how we ended up in a relationship. She also explained that they had been having issues in their relationship but it was nothing new. They always reconciled but it was the first time he had cheated on her and she didn’t know if she could forgive him. For me, I didn’t want anything to do with the guy.
Hellen turned out to be a really good person. We kept in touch and she invited me for dates on many occasions. She even treated me to shopping sprees. We became good friends and have stayed close to this day.
