Marriet and Lucas met at an event and managed to build a friendship but as years went by they lost touch. After going through an ugly divorce, she decided to take time and focus on herself and her daughter. This worked out for eight months and just when she was about to get used to being alone Lucas reached out to her.
Unlike most men, he didn’t start the conversation by complimenting her or flirting with her. Instead, he focused on how beautiful her Instagram feed was. He was a huge art fan and Marriet had filled her feed with photos of her sketches. The two rebuilt their friendship and ended up talking daily.
Lucas knew that Marriet was not in the market for a relationship but somehow, he couldn’t help being fascinated by her. To get her to warm up to him he ensured that he maintained her attention by always talking about the things she liked. So, he decided to always pay attention to the small things that made her happy.
Even though it took two months, his plan finally worked and Marriet had started to like him. In their daily conversations, she suggested they should go for lunch sometime. Lucas agreed and went ahead to suggest different restaurants so she could pick. Marriet checked out his suggestions and ended up picking one at Village Market. They both agreed on the location and the day.
On the day of the date, Marriet called one of her friends to do her makeup and help her get ready. As she talked about the details of her date, her friend reminded her to be on guard even though Lucas seemed like a good guy. Once she was ready, she took an Uber to Village Market. Traditionally the man is set to arrive before the woman but being out of the dating scene she assumed that things had changed.
She found and booth sat down and called Lucas to find out where he was.
“Hey, are you almost here?” She asked.
“Yes, I’m just parking my car then I come up,” He replied.
At no point in time had she been nervous but after that call it all felt surreal. In a few minutes, she saw a man approach her and judging by his smile she could tell it was him. He got to the table and hugged her before sitting down.
One of the waitresses approached them and laid down two menus on the table.
“Order whatever you would like to eat. Don’t look at the price, I’ll sort it out,” He said.
Marriet flashed him a shy smile and ordered. Lucas skimmed through the menu and asked for the most expensive food he could see. As they were waiting for their food they started talking. Lucas took the opportunity to brag about his businesses, land and wealth. Marriet listened keenly but seemed uninterested.
The waitress came back and cut him short by handing them the drinks menu. Judging by her facial expression, Marriet could tell she had forgotten about the drinks. She ordered a Long Island cocktail.
“Why would you order that? You don’t want to order anything by the bottle?” He asked.
“No one cocktail is okay for me,” She replied.
Once again, Lucas asked for the most expensive drink and handed the menu back. Forty minutes later the waitress brought the food and went back to bring their drinks. The two ate as Lucas continued to brag about his accomplishments. By this time Marriet had already accepted that the Lucas she was dealing with was not the one she was fond of talking to.
When they were done, Lucas signalled for the waitress to bring the bill. She brought the bill and placed it on his side of the table. He checked out the amount and asked her if he could pay via card. The waitress nodded and went back to get the machine. Lucas opened his wallet and closed it almost immediately.
“I think I left my cards in the car, Let me go get them then I can sort out the bill,” He said.
Marriet nodded and he stood up and walked away quickly. Lucas made his way to the exit but was stopped by a man wearing a T-shirt that was branded with the name of the restaurant.
“Hi sir, we seem to have a problem, Please could we head back to the restaurant?” He asked.
“I was actually on my way to go get my debit card from the car,” Lucas lied hoping the man would leave him alone.
“Okay, let’s go together then we can make our way back,” The waiter replied.
To avoid going to the parking lot with him, Lucas opened his wallet and pretended that he had found his card. The waiter smiled at him and they both headed back to the restaurant.
The waitress who had served them brought the machine.
“Hi sir, I’m about to finish my shift, kindly could you make your payment since you are my last customer of the day,” She said.
“I’ve just realized that I don’t have enough money on this card, I’ll have to go for my other one,” He lied.
“That’s okay, one of us can go with you then you can make the payment,” She replied.
Lucas, knowing that there was no way out, decided the best way to handle the situation was to cause drama.
“This is small money, why are you treating me like a criminal?” He said.
“No sir we just really need you to sort the bill,” She replied.
“Is there a problem here?” The manager asked as he approached them.
“No, we are just trying to sort out a small issue,” The waitress responded.
Marriet who was already feeling embarrassed by the attention she was getting, requested the receipt and looked at it. She then pulled out her phone and paid for her part of the bill.
“There I have sorted my bill, that leaves his part of the bill,” She said as she stood up.
“Marriet, you are not seriously going to leave me here, are you?” Lucas said.
“Clear the bill then so we can leave. I would like to go home,” She replied.
Lucas remained silent.
“I had a feeling you might pull such a stunt and I’m so glad I informed these two early in advance. Goodbye Lucas, don’t ever talk to me again,” Marriet said and left. The restaurant manager called the police and Lucas ended up at the police station. Although Marriet felt bad for how things had gone, this incident proved to her that her solitude was surely better.
