He looked like the coolest guy from afar and on his Instagram page. Frank’s style was casual, and he always had a statement accessory that made for great small talk. Joana met him through a mutual friend who worked with him.
“Who’s the cool-looking guy holding a beer bottle?” Joana asked her friend, Annie.
“That’s Frank, the office’s cool kid,” Annie responded.
“How come you don’t talk about him?” Joana asked.
“I don’t interact with him a lot but I think he’s an interesting guy,” Annie responded.
Later Joana and Frank got talking and made an instant connection. They exchanged numbers with the intention of meeting again. Frank called a few days later and asked Joana out later. They decided to grab something to eat later in the evening before going dancing. They got to the restaurant at around 6.30 in the evening, and that was the first time Joana saw another side of Frank.
“Excuse me, sir, we’re about to close,” the guard told Frank.
“It’s just 6.30,” Frank told the guard arrogantly.
“Yes, sir but we’re closing early since it’s a public holiday,” the guard explained.
Joana witnessed Frank yell at the guard, complaining about the inconvenience he was causing him. Eventually, a manager came and agreed to let them in since several customers were still finishing their meals. After another few minutes of complaining about how guards can be unreasonable, he finally changed the topic. A waiter also took their orders, and luckily they didn’t want anything complicated, so their order was ready shortly after.
They had their meal in peace and engaged in small talk. Everything was okay until it was time to pay the bill. Frank took the bill and commented, “I hope they are not the kind who expect tips because, after the hassle of getting in here, they don’t deserve anything.”
“To be fair, the waiter’s service was good. Additionally, the guard was just doing his job. We did come in late given the closing hours on a day like today,” Joana responded.
“So you think they deserve a tip despite almost not allowing us in? Furthermore when did tipping become a thing in Kenya? These guys are paid to do this job already,” said Frank.
“It’s just a token of appreciation for good service, at least that’s how I look at it,” Joana replied.
“Do you get tipped every time you do your job?” Frank asked Joana.
“I get bonuses sometimes, gifts from clients or referrals. I don’t see the harm in trying to supplement another person’s income if you can,” Joana argued.
They soon headed out to the dancing venue. They used Joana’s account to request a taxi, and the driver arrived almost immediately. Joana and Frank had not been to the place before, and neither had the cab driver.
After the discussion in the restaurant, Joana was happy when Frank started a light conversation. He was sharing a funny story that had happened at their workplace. It started raining heavily, and true to Nairobi’s traffic patterns; the roads soon became a parking lot. Frank suggested looking for an alternative route. They tried finding shortcuts to the place but ended up driving around the same area for about forty minutes in heavy rain.
“Didn’t we drive by here a few minutes ago? I think you’re doing this on purpose,” Frank told the cab driver.
“Boss, you asked me to look for an alternative route and that’s what I have been trying to do,” the cab driver responded, trying to remain calm.
“Could you check your maps to see how far we are from the venue?” Frank asked Joana.
She gave him the phone to check. The maps said the venue was 100 metres away from their location, but none of them could see the exact venue since they couldn’t see any sign boards. Joana suggested moving closer to the destination using the maps. They did, but they still couldn’t figure it out.
Frank started blaming the driver accusing him of incompetence. The driver lost his cool, and he ended the trip. It was still raining outside, and neither Frank nor Joana had an umbrella. Joana tried to plead with the driver to drop them at a place with shelter; meanwhile, Frank was threatening him with poor ratings and reporting him. The driver was getting agitated.
Finally, Joana yelled at Frank to stop talking because it looked like he would engage in a physical fight with the driver. She asked him to get out of the car as she paid for the trip. They also looked for shelter when she got out of the cab. Frank then started ranting about the cab driver and mentioned that he wouldn’t have paid him a single shilling for the poor treatment if it were up to him.
Joana was fed up with his behaviour, but she decided getting out of the rain was more urgent than lecturing Frank. It turned out to be one of the worst dates she had ever been on, and she ghosted him.
