The last thing anyone ever wants is to run into their ex while on a date. Thankfully, it’s not a common occurrence or else many of us would die single. Even though I’ve dated my fair share of women I have never run into any of them after we broke up until the fateful day I found out my ex was a waitress at a restaurant I took my date.
I had just met this beautiful girl and I wanted to make a good impression on her. Normally, I don’t go on dates but this was an exception. She was adamant about going on a date no matter how much I tried to make excuses.
“I have a family event on Saturday,” I said.
“We can meet after.” She answered.
“Okay, but I’m not sure what time it will end.”
“It’s okay. Just let me know when you’re done.”
I did have a family event but it ended around 6 pm. I tried to kill some time at a local bar as I figured out where I would take my date. I’m not very conversant with good hangout spots in Nairobi so I decided to play it safe and go to a cafe.
After choosing the restaurant with the help of a cousin who had accompanied me to the bar, I ordered another round of beer to kill the nerves before heading to the location.
“I’m done with the family event. Let’s meet at around 8 pm. I’m sending you the location.” I texted my lovely date.
“Okay. Let me get ready and come.”
I started to head to the restaurant at around 7.30 pm knowing that I would make it before her. However, I underestimated the Westlands traffic and I ended up taking a whole hour to get to the location.
My date didn’t hide her anger towards me for being late. I found her waiting for me at the parking lot ready to pounce on me. She still looked stunning though.
“I’m so sorry.” I tried to explain but she wasn’t listening to me.
Even before the date started, I was already messing things up so I knew I had to really play my cards right if I wanted a second date with her. I decided to take her somewhere more special and exclusive to make her forget how badly I had messed up.
“Let’s go somewhere else. A beautiful girl like you should go to the best restaurants.”
Finally, she smiled as we walked to my car. I remembered a Japanese-style restaurant that my friends have been talking about endlessly and thought it would be a good idea to try it again.
When we walked in, we were greeted by a concierge who then showed us where to sit. The place was packed with happy people enjoying their meals and I knew that I had made the right decision. My date was also warming up to me and within a few minutes, she had completely forgotten about what had happened earlier.
“I’ve always wanted to come here.” She said.
“Me too. I heard good things about the place.” I answered.
A waiter brought us the menu and after perusing through it, we made our order. As we waited for our food, I saw a familiar face walk by. I kept looking at the girl’s back hoping she would turn around so I could get a better look but she didn’t. My date noticed that I was distracted and got irritated again.
“You’re so rude.” She said.
“I apologize. I just thought I saw someone familiar.”
“Do you really want to be here or should I leave?”
“Come on. We were having fun.” I said, trying to cheer her up.
The mysterious girl disappeared for most of the evening and I had an enjoyable time with my date. However, as we ordered our last drinks for the night, the girl passed by again and I got a clear look at her.
“Wendy?” I shouted to get her attention.
She looked in my direction and I knew for sure, it was my ex. My date didn’t seem amused by my behaviour but surprisingly, she didn’t leave. Wendy came to our table but it was obvious she wasn’t happy to see me.
“Do you work here?” I asked.
“Yeah, how can I help you?”
“It’s nice to see you.”
It was. She looked like a completely different person from the girl I dated four years ago.
“So, you started going on dates?” She asked and I laughed.
I tried to stay calm but I was visibly excited to see my ex. Anytime I said something, my date would give me a look that sent shivers through my body.
“Yes, this is Grace. She’s my beautiful date.” I said but she wasn’t pleased with me at all.
“Nice to meet you. I hope you enjoyed your meal.”
“Your food is good but this date is the worst.” My date answered angrily.
“I’m sorry about that. I need to go and attend to my table.” My ex answered and dashed off before I could say anything.
“I need to go,” Grace said.
“Okay, let me call you a cab.”
“Are you not dropping me off?”
“I don’t feel very well. I think I’ll also call a cab.”
It was a lie. I felt perfectly fine. I just wanted to stay at the restaurant longer and talk to my ex.
Grace left and that was the last I ever saw of her. I tried to ask her out on another date but she kept cancelling our plans. Eventually, I got the message and moved on. The only good thing that came out of that date was I got to reconnect with my ex and we patched things up. We remained friends but it’s very clear that there’s no chemistry between us anymore. She has made it clear that that ship has sailed and it is never coming back.
