Vivian was an upcoming TikTok influencer who lived and breathed social media. Everything she did had to be about content. Whenever I took her on a date, she would spend the whole time taking videos and posting them on TikTok. I, on the other hand, couldn’t care less about social media. I barely knew what was happening online until Vivian told me.
Our worlds collided at an event I had been invited to by a friend. My friend was an influencer and I asked me to accompany her so I could help her take pictures since her designated photographer had cancelled on her. She knew Vivian and introduced her to me. The rest was history.
Actually, I didn’t think that I would end up dating her. We barely spoke the day we met but I took her number since she was pretty. One message led to a long talking stage but I got to see a different side of her.
She prioritized her career and most of our conversations revolved around TikTok.
“Do you think this would get a lot of likes?” She asked on WhatsApp followed by a picture of her.
“Yes, I think so. It looks good.”
“Would you like it if you saw it on your IG?”
“I don’t use social media but I would like it if I did.”
“Okay. I’m posting it. Tell your friends to follow me and like my posts.”
“I did. My profile picture is a photo of you and my bio is your TikTok handle.”
“Thanks, baby. I love you.”
Despite having different interests and lifestyles, I supported her aspirations to become an influencer and did my best to help her achieve her dreams.
However, I had to set some boundaries especially when it came to date nights. Things were getting out of hand and I felt like I wasn’t spending any quality time with my girlfriend. So, we both agreed that during a date, we wouldn’t go on social media.
“Don’t you think you spend too much time on your phone? When was the last time you went out without thinking about social media?” I questioned her but she brushed it off.
“This is my bread and butter. I have to do this so that I can grow my brand.”
“You’re always on your phone,” I complained to her.
“This is my work.”
“I know but we need to spend some time together.”
“I’ll try but I can’t promise you anything.”
“Can we at least give me your full attention on date nights?”
“I can do that.”
“Perfect. I want us to go for a picnic tomorrow.”
“Great. I’ll come to your place then we can go together.”
I thought a picnic would be a good idea for us since it was outside and there were less distractions. Vivian came to my place just as she promised and she seemed excited about the date.
“Do you know I’ve never been on a picnic?” She asked.
“Really? It’s so much fun. You’ll love it.”
We started preparing snacks that we would eat at the park then packed it up and called an Uber. Everything was going well and Vivian hadn’t been on her phone the whole time. When we got to the park, we found a nice location near the river and set up our picnic.
As I was laying the food down, I noticed that Vivian was unusually quiet so I looked up and saw her on her phone. I didn’t say anything since she hadn’t been using it. However, I set the whole picnic alone as Vivian took pictures and videos.
“We agreed that you wouldn’t use your phone on a date,” I commented gently.
“Of course babe. I just wanted to capture this beautiful moment. The photos look so good.” She said, showing them to me.
“Okay. Let’s eat. I’m hungry.”
Barely five minutes later, Vivian removed her phone from her bag and started scrolling through TikTok. From that moment, it was impossible to get her attention so I decided to join her.
“Wow, look at these dresses. This girl has amazing clothes in her shop.” She said, showing them to me.
“Yeah. They’re good.”
“Which one should I get? I think this one will look good on me. I already have that one.” She rumbled as she scrolled through the page.
“Do you want to go on a walk?” I asked but got no response.
I sat back and watched her for a moment. It was the first time that I truly took time to observe her when she started using her phone. Previously, I would take my phone and check football updates as she scrolled on social media. At some point, she stopped talking to me and continued scrolling through her TikTok feed. It was like she was in another world when she went on TikTok and no matter how hard I tried to get her attention, nothing worked.
“This is so cute.” She said to herself.
Her behaviour was not unusual but it made me angry since we had just agreed to give each other our undivided attention while we were on a date. I had tried my best to create a special moment but she was so obsessed with being an influencer that she couldn’t appreciate my efforts.
We got into a heated argument after I confronted her about her behaviour and then she dropped the bombshell.
“I think you’re just jealous of me.” She said.
“Jealous? How can I be jealous of you? I’ve gone out of my way to help you.”
“You never want me to take pictures or videos even though you know very well that this is what my job requires. You just don’t like the attention I get on social media.”
“I’m the most supportive boyfriend you’ll ever have. Most guys wouldn’t tolerate this kind of behaviour for as long as I have.”
“Why don’t you end the relationship if you’re so miserable?”
We broke up that day while on a picnic date. She claimed that I never supported her and that I was bringing her down. After we broke up, Vivian realized that I was telling her the truth and that no one would put up with a girl who was always on her phone. She tried to reconcile with me several times but I was no longer interested in her.
