Arguments are normal in relationships but my ex used to take it to another level. Rachel was a drama queen. She loved attention and did anything to get it. When we got into arguments, she would make a mountain out of a hill which would make us argue more. At some point, I decided to let her do whatever she wanted just to keep the peace in the relationship. However, it didn’t stop her from making everything a big deal. One of the most embarrassing moments in my life was when she started reading a poem in the restaurant that she had written to apologize to me.
We had been friends for years but after she broke up with her boyfriend, we decided to start dating. I knew she wasn’t the typical quiet and reserved girl that I was used to dating. Nonetheless, Rachel and I got along well and I thought it would be the same when we got into a relationship.
It wasn’t. In fact, it was miserable almost from the beginning. I was dealing with a broken heart and a drama queen which was more than I signed up for. However, I liked Rachel and cared deeply about her so I didn’t want to hurt her more by breaking up with her.
“She’s a good girl. She’s just going through a lot right now.” I explained to a friend after telling them about the constant arguments we had.
“You’re too good to her when she’s a giant headache to you. She doesn’t deserve you, Ken.”
I may have been too optimistic because nothing much changed. We had our good days but Rachel had insecurities that made her lash out at anything and everything. I don’t think a whole day would pass without us having an argument.
Sometimes, she would pick a fight while we were in public places like the restaurant which was really embarrassing. People in my apartment knew me as the guy dating the drama queen since she would scream at the top of her lungs every time we had a disagreement.
The good thing was we used to reconcile easily after arguing. I would mostly have to compromise but Rachel never stayed angry at me for very long.
“Why are we even arguing?” I asked.
“You didn’t tell me that I look good in this outfit.”
“You look good in everything, babe.”
“Okay, but you have to tell me. You’re lucky I love you so much.” She said and the hour-long argument ended.
Rachel got used to getting her way and at some point, I felt like she was taking advantage of my kindness. I would try everything to make her feel comfortable and loved but she still found something to complain about.
The relationship started taking a toll on my mental health so I decided to take a break. Of course, she wasn’t very happy about it.
“You promised you would never leave me. You’re just like my ex.” She said.
“I’ve tried my best to make you happy but you don’t seem to care. Taking you on a date is a risk because you always cause problems at the restaurant. We can’t even hang out with my friends anymore because they don’t like you.” I finally revealed my true feelings to her.
“I promise I will change.”
“I’ve been patient for long enough. I need my space.”
I left reluctantly since I still had feelings for Rachel but I had to do what was best for me. We stayed a few days without talking before she reached out to me.
“I’m sorry about everything I’ve put you through.” She started.
“It’s over, Rachel,” I replied firmly.
It can’t be. Give me one more chance. I want to be a better girlfriend for you. Can we meet somewhere and talk?”
I gave it a thought and agreed. “Fine, let’s meet at any restaurant you like.”
“Thank you. I’ll send you the address.”
We agreed to meet the following day for a quick lunch. I knew that I didn’t want to get back with her but I felt bad leaving her all alone since she didn’t have many people she could talk to.
She also seemed like she was ready to change her behaviour so I was a bit optimistic about the date.
I got there before her yet she was the one who had invited me to the restaurant. However, I wasn’t surprised. Rachel always took her sweet time when we went out. Maybe that was the reason she always got angry when I didn’t compliment her.
After more than an hour, she finally showed up. She had a huge smile on her face as she walked towards me which made me feel more comfortable. At least she was in a good mood so I didn’t expect her to cause drama in the restaurant.
Sure enough, she was in a great mood. She hugged me and kissed me lightly on the cheek before sitting down.
“I just want to say I’m really sorry.” She said as soon as she sat down.
“It’s okay. You went through a lot in your last relationship.”
“I know but it wasn’t your fault.”
“Don’t worry about it. I just want you to be happy.”
“Well, you made me happy and I made you miserable.”
I couldn’t believe I was getting a genuine apology from Rachel. It felt unreal and I kept wondering whether she was pretending to be nice so we could get back together. However, things were peaceful throughout the date. It was like the old days when we were best friends.
Just before we left, she asked me to stay for a few more minutes.
“I want to tell you something.” She started as she reached in her bag.
My heart was racing because I thought she was going to tell me that she was pregnant. You can imagine my relief when I saw a piece of paper in her hand.
“I wrote you a poem.” She said.
“On a paper?”
“Yes, I want you to keep it.”
“Okay.”
Then, the nightmare started. She cleared her throat and then started reciting the poem aloud. The restaurant was packed since it was lunchtime and everyone turned to look at us. It didn’t seem to bother her. In fact, she stood up and started dramatizing it.
After what seemed like an eternity, she finally finished reading her poem and the restaurant went silent. I was so embarrassed that I didn’t say anything. I paid for the lunch and headed out as fast as I could. Rachel followed me and finally caught up with me.
“What’s wrong? Didn’t you like the poem?” She asked
“Are you serious? This is the most embarrassing day of my life. I thought you had changed.”
“I was trying to be nice since I had embarrassed you many times in public.”
“You have a lot of issues and I don’t think being in a relationship will help.”
“Are you breaking up with me?”
“We broke up a long time ago. I just want you to get help.”
Surprisingly, she let me go without a fight. We barely talked after that incident at the restaurant but I checked in on her a couple of times to make sure she was okay. My friends found out about the restaurant situation and they still make fun of me to this day.
