Belinda had this habit of soft-launching her boyfriends. She would post pictures of them together but block their faces. In her words, she didn’t want her social media followers to be jealous of her relationships. However, she learned the hard way why you should let your close friends know who your boyfriend is.
It’s good to let your friends know who you’re dating to save you unnecessary embarrassment. Your friends may recognize your potential bae and bring you up to speed on their reputation. It also reduces the chances of your significant other dating one of your friends to make you jealous.
Unfortunately, Belinda didn’t get the memo or she thought that something like that would never happen to her. After all, she had dated many times before and none of her boyfriends had tried to date her friends.
However, her new boyfriend was different. From the moment they started dating, we noticed a change in Belinda’s demeanour. She wasn’t as bubbly and talkative as she used to be. She would spend most of the time on her phone chatting with her boyfriend.
“Are you still texting that guy you started dating?” I asked her after noticing that she wasn’t talking to us.
She smiled and then nodded without saying anything.
“When are you going to introduce him to us?” One of our friends teased.
“Why? Do you want to date him?” She asked.
“We always introduce our boyfriends but you’ve never introduced even one.”
“I’ll introduce him when we get engaged.”
We knew that she would never introduce her boyfriend so we didn’t insist on it.
Even though we never saw her infamous boyfriend, we knew a lot about him. Belinda never stopped talking about him. When she wasn’t chatting with him on the phone, she would brag to us how he was an amazing boyfriend. She referred to him as “Wiz” because she claimed he resembled Wiz Khalifa.
Her stories about him were wild which made us think that she was either exaggerating to make him look good or he was lying to her.
“Wiz returned from Paris yesterday and brought me this.” She said showing up a decor piece of the Eiffel Tower.
“No offence, but this looks like those things you buy in those malls along Moi Avenue,” I said to her.
“You’re just jealous of me.”
“I’m not. I’m just trying to help you so you don’t embarrass yourself.”
“One day, you’ll see photos of me in Paris travelling with him and you’ll be the one dying of embarrassment.”
“Okay. I can’t wait for the day.”
However, it seemed Belinda was paying attention to us because she started seeing her boyfriend for who he really was – a pathological liar. She complained that she was experiencing relationship problems and soon after, she informed us that she had broken up with him. Honestly, all of us were happy that she was done with the relationship.
We thought that it was the last we would hear of the infamous Wiz. However, he was like a cockroach that refused to die.
“Wiz wants us to get back together,” Belinda told us.
“Don’t do it.”
“I’m not but he won’t leave me alone. I’m scared of what he will do to me.”
“He won’t do anything. We’re here to defend you.” I assured her.
After some time, he stopped bothering her and we thought that she was finally free. Everything seemed to be going smoothly.
We all moved on after a few weeks and Belinda even started seeing a new guy. I also got a date from someone on Instagram and we planned on going for a double date. I was surprised that Belinda had agreed to go on the double date since she didn’t introduce any of her boyfriends to us but it seemed like she had learned her lesson from her last relationship.
Belinda and I got to the restaurant and waited for our dates to arrive. Belinda’s date, Harry, arrived shortly after but my date was running late.
“David is on his way,” I said aloud subconsciously.
“His name is David?” Belinda asked.
“Yes, why?”
“That’s a strange coincidence. My ex’s name is David.”
“You mean Wiz?”
“Yes. His real name is David.”
“That is a strange coincidence.”
As we were chatting, David sent me another message informing me that he had arrived. I looked at the entrance and saw him walking in. He looked just like his pictures – tall, skinny and had dreadlocks. I waved to him which prompted the others to look back.
“Oh my God, what is David doing here?” Belinda asked
“Do you know him?”
“That’s my ex.”
I was in disbelief. What were the chances that my date was Belinda’s ex? However, it dawned on me that David had contacted me on purpose.
Belinda must have told him her close friends’ names and when they broke up, he decided to contact us to make her jealous. He found me on her followers list on Instagram and sent me a message. Since I didn’t know what he looked like or even his real name, I just thought he was a good-looking guy who was interested in me. He offered to take me on a date and I suggested a double date with a friend.
“What’s going on?” Belinda asked me as David approached.
“I don’t know.”
“Did you think you could ignore me and move on just like that?” David said as soon as he got to our table.
“This was a mistake. I think you should leave.” I said.
“It wasn’t a mistake. You begged me to take you on a date. I have your DMs.”
At this point, we were all quietly waiting for him to leave but he continued ranting.
“I just came because I knew you’d feel jealous. I’m not interested in your friend. I want you back, Belinda. Please take me back.” He said.
We all stayed quiet and when he realized that he wouldn’t get a response, he left. The date ended shortly after that and we couldn’t wait to tell the girls what had happened.
It turned out that he sent a message to several of Belinda’s friends including me. However, I was the only one who fell for it since I was the only one who was single. From that day, Belinda has always let us know who she was dating.
