They had been best friends for many years. Ciku and Wendy spent so much time together, so they had many mutual friends. They met most of the people they knew through each other or made their first acquaintance at the same time. This also applies to Joel—they met him at a friend’s birthday party the same night.
Becoming friends with Joel was easy because he was chilled, friendly, and talkative. He was a people person, and you didn’t need to have known him before to strike up a conversation. Ciku and Wendy were often together, so Joel talked to both of them at some point. The conversation wasn’t flirtatious, but Wendy could tell that Ciku liked him. Like a good friend, Wendy knew that Ciku had marked her territory, so she allowed them space to get to know each other.
Fortunately, the party was filled with good vibes people and plenty of games to join, so Ciku joined another group. The night ended on a high, and Ciku exchanged phone numbers with Joel. They texted over the following days, and one night, he called her.
“Hey Ciku, what are you doing this coming weekend?” Joel asked.
“I don’t think I have any plans yet. What do you have in mind?” Ciku asked him.
“I’m hosting a couple of friends. Do you care to join us?”
“Yes, sure.”
“Awesome, come with your friend Wendy too,” added Joel.
It made sense that Joel would tell Ciku to bring Wendy along because Joel’s friends would also attend. Ciku even joked that Joel was probably trying to hook up Wendy with one of his friends. She did end up having a brief relationship with one of them, but no thanks to Joel.
Joel kept inviting Wendy into his conversations with Ciku at the party, but it seemed genuine. They would be talking about their experiences with something, and he would expect both Ciku and Wendy to share their experiences. To an unsuspecting eye, Joel was being friendly with Ciku’s friend.
Over time, Joel and Ciku attended more gatherings together. Wendy would tag along sometimes because Joel had extended an open invitation. Often, he would ask Ciku why she didn’t join them. Ciku liked that the guy she was interested in liked her best friend and vice versa. She didn’t have to force a friendship between the two. Wendy liked Joel too as a person and as Ciku’s boyfriend. Furthermore, she was spending a lot of time with Joel’s friend.
The girls exchanged stories about their men and enjoyed going on outings and parties together since the men belonged to the same circle. They felt like they were in a season of the Army Wives or the Basketball Wives. If one missed attending a hang-out session with the crew, she would fill in the other on what was happening.
Wendy’s romance tale with Joel’s friend ended abruptly when Wendy discovered that he was cheating. As a result, she had to distance herself from the rest of the group for a while. However, she had made friends with many people in the group, so they would invite her to join them when the guy who cheated on her wasn’t around. On one such occasion, they got high, and Joel brought up the topic.
“I hope we’re okay after what my friend did,” said Joel to Wendy.
“It is what it is,” Wendy shrugged.
“My friend is like that with women. I was surprised you fell for him,” Joel added.
“Wow! Now he chooses to speak up?” Wendy asked Joel.
“You can’t blame me. I love you but bro code wouldn’t let me,” Joel defended himself.
Wendy didn’t think much of the declaration of affection then, and she even forgot about it. A month later, Ciku started behaving strangely towards her. She started avoiding her. She’d ignore her calls and messages. Wendy decided to give her space and hoped she would eventually reach out to her since she hadn’t done anything to annoy her; she figured space was the right course of action.
The silence between them lasted for three months. They met at a mutual friend’s graduation, and after a few drinks, they started chatting.
“So how are you and Joel doing?” Wendy asked Ciku.
“We broke up three months ago,” Ciku responded.
“Why? Are you okay?” Wendy asked, looking surprised.
“Babe, there is so no delicate way to say this but you were the reason,” Ciku told her.
Wendy sat down, looking confused. She dreaded the answer to the following question because she sensed it was bad if it led to a breakup. “What do you mean I was the reason? Did I do or say something?”
“That’s the worst part, you did nothing wrong. Plainly put, Joel was busy moaning your name as we were being physically intimate,” Ciku said indifferently.
Something suddenly choked Wendy, and tears started flowing. Her eyes were wide open, but she couldn’t find the right words.
“Don’t worry babe, I know you had nothing to do with it but I needed a break from you. Apparently, Joel was into you from the moment he met us but couldn’t vocalize it especially after you started going out with his friend. It turns out I was the consolation prize,” Ciku told Wendy.
It took a while for them to rebuild their friendship, but they never spoke about Joel again.
