Imagine going on a dream date and then finding out that the same man took your close friend to the exact date. How disappointed would you be? I bet you would be furious. Well, my friend and I found it hilarious but I bet I wouldn’t be laughing if I knew at the time that my date had planned the same thing for me and my friend.
Dating in a big city is an extreme sport. You’d think it would be easier since there are so many people to choose from but the choices are the problem. It’s so hard to meet decent people. Everyone seems to have an agenda or strange habits that are impossible to tolerate. I’ve gone on so many first dates that I was burnt out. However, Daniel came along and changed my mind.
At that point, I was convinced that there were no normal men in the city but Daniel seemed wholesome. He was soft-spoken and kind which was completely different to most of the guys I had gone on dates with.
We met at a paint and sip. He was actually the only single guy there and was in high demand so when he rejected everyone and came to talk to me, I was flattered.
“Hi.” He said in a boyishly cute voice.
“Hi,” I answered with a smile.
“I’m Daniel.”
“Sydney.”
“Nice to meet you.”
“Nice to meet you too.”
He switched seats with one of the girls and we chatted the entire time. I noticed that Daniel was a good painter so I asked him to give me some tips.
“I used to draw when I was young but I stopped. I’m trying to get better at it.”
“You’re actually better than most people I’ve seen.” He said.
“Oh, thank you. Do you go to many sip and paint events?”
“Not that many, but I’ve been to a few.”
That should have been a red flag but I thought that it was sweet. It must have been his voice that made me give him the benefit of the doubt. He promised to give me a private lesson and that was how we exchanged numbers and planned an official date.
Well, I didn’t do much planning. Daniel already had the perfect date idea and all he wanted was for me to show up.
“Are you ready for our date tomorrow?” He asked.
“Of course. I can’t wait.”
“Wear something nice and sexy.” He said to me over the phone.
“Okay. Are you still not going to tell me what we’re doing?”
“Yeah, it’s a surprise but I promise you’ll love it.”
I trusted Daniel even though I hardly knew him. He just had a way of making me feel safe and comfortable. As he had suggested, I wore a corset top and a pair of black mom jeans. My curvy figure was in full display and I knew Daniel would like what he saw.
We met at a restaurant and had a great time. The food was great, the ambience was amazing and the company was the best. I couldn’t get enough of Daniel. We talked about everything from childhood memories to relationship goals. I even opened up to him about my struggles with dating in the city.
“That’s horrible. I would never put you through any kind of trouble.” He assured.
“Thanks. I nearly gave up on finding an ideal partner until you came along.” I said.
“Are you ready for the next part of our date?” He asked excitedly.
“Sure. What are we doing?”
“I want to take you to my favourite lounge. They have the best cocktails in town.”
Indeed, the place had some great cocktails. We enjoyed our drinks as we continued to get to know each other. After a few hours, Daniel suggested that we should go to the final part of the date.
“This is the main part of the date. Prepare to be impressed.” He said.
We drove past the city and into an affluent neighbourhood with high-rise apartments. During the years I had lived in the city, I had never been to that side but I had past it thousands of times.
“Wow, do you live here?” I asked.
“No, I’m just renting the place for the evening.”
“Okay. That’s so nice.”
“I can’t afford to rent here. I’m just an artist.”
We made our way to the apartment which was beautifully decorated with roses and painting tools on the table. He dimmed the lights and lit some candles then joined me on the couch.
“This is so nice,” I said.
“I knew you’d like it. Do you want some wine?”
“Sure.”
He got up and I could see him opening the wine bottle in the kitchen. I turned on the TV and played some music from YouTube.
After bringing the wine, he suggested that we should change into T-shirts so we don’t get our clothes dirty when we start painting. I agreed and he came back with two T-shirts.
“You’re so thoughtful,” I said as he handed me the T-shirt.
We moved to the floor so we could be more comfortable while painting. Daniel gave me some pointers which actually helped me with my painting. We kept talking while painting and I lost track of time. I had so much fun that I didn’t realize it was almost 2 am.
Before leaving, Daniel and I exchanged a kiss and promised to see each other soon. I got an Uber and went back to my place. The following day, I invited my friend, Kate, over to tell her about the dreamy date.
“He rented a luxury apartment for the night and we had a little painting session as he told me about his life.” I narrated.
“Wait, that sounds exactly like the date I had been on a few weeks ago. Is the guy called Daniel?”
As soon as Kate mentioned his name, I went silent. It was obvious that we had gone on the same date with the same guy. Once reality sunk in, I started asking her details about their date and they matched exactly with mine. We laughed as we gave each other the same details.
After that date, I was fully convinced that there was no normal guy in my city. Even the ones who seemed innocent and genuine like Daniel had issues. I never spoke to Daniel again and I quit going to Sip and Paint events in case I ran into him.
