I trusted my mother to make the right decision for me, especially when it came to my girlfriends. Somehow, she always knew whether it would work or not and in all cases, she predicted that it wouldn’t. She must have seen something that I didn’t. Once again, my mum’s intuition was spot on. Somehow, she managed to convince an American celebrity who was in the country for business to “meet her son”.
I had been single for a while and quite frankly, I was enjoying the single life. I had more freedom and less stress in my life. However, my mum was always concerned that I wouldn’t meet the right person for me. She would pressure me every day to introduce a good girl to her. I was in no hurry to get back into the dating scene. I had exhausted all my effort to impress girls.
One day out of the blue my mum called me when I was in my own house and informed me that she had met a girl. At the time, I didn’t think much of it since my mum was a social person who was always meeting new people. However, when I found out who it was, everything changed.
“Where are you, my son?” She asked.
“I’m in the house, mum.”
“Don’t go anywhere. We have guests tonight and I want you to meet them.”
All that was going through my mind was who the guests could be. I already knew that my mum had gone to see my uncle that day so something good must have happened during the meeting.
My uncle was a government official who handles a lot of celebrity events so I thought my mum wanted me to organize a job for me. Little did I know she was organizing a woman for me.
I stayed in the house as instructed but due to the boredom, I went to sleep. A few hours later, I was woken up by my younger brothers who were at my house. They couldn’t hide their excitement.
“She’s here, she’s here.” They kept repeating.
“Who is here?” I asked, still waking up from my slumber.
“The girl mum wants you to meet.”
“Oh, it’s a girl. I should have known Mum was organizing a girl for me.”
“Bro, you don’t understand. This isn’t just any girl.”
“Really? Why?”
“Come and see.” They answered and then ran downstairs.
I splashed my face with water, changed my clothes and then went downstairs to meet the guests. As I walked down, my eyes met this gorgeous woman and I was in a trance. We stared at each other for what seemed like several minutes before I finally made it down the stairs and joined the rest of the group.
“Michael, welcome.” My mum said with a huge smile. “This is my son. Michael, these are my guests.”
She proceeded to introduce everyone in the room. The lovely lady called Amber, her mum, her friend and her cousin.
We locked eyes and we couldn’t look away. There was something about her that made my heart race. To be honest, the only thing I heard was Amber’s name and I went to sit next to her. We sparked a conversation. I could tell she looked familiar but couldn’t tell where I had seen her. Knowing that my uncle met a lot of celebrities, I knew she must be one.
She wasn’t a celebrity, technically, but she was certainly famous. She was a social media influencer and had worked with some of the biggest entertainers in America.
I was thoroughly impressed by her and I must have impressed her too because she wanted to go on a date with me.
“You know, Amber and her friends haven’t been around. You should show them the nightlife.” My mum butted in.
She agreed and I was more than happy to do it. One of the best parts about Lagos is the nightlife so I knew she would have a great time.
We went out and she was blown away. She couldn’t stop saying how much fun she was having. I was having fun too in her company. Being an American influencer, Amber stood out. Everyone in the club kept asking who the girl was and I was just smiling knowing I had the hottest woman in the room.
We went back to my cousin’s place and ended up talking all night. The following day, Amber came to my place and stayed with me for two days. That was the moment that solidified my feelings for her. I wanted to be with her and around her all the time.
Unfortunately, her time to leave came and she went back to her hotel.
“Come stay at my hotel for the last night.” She suggested.
I agreed and went to her hotel. I helped her pack as we talked about our plans and how we would make a long-distance relationship work. The more we talked, the more we realized that a long-distance relationship would be difficult to maintain.
“Why don’t you come to California with me?” She suggested.
I was shocked at the request but a part of me was tempted to agree. She even offered to buy the air ticket for me. All I had to do was pack my bags and follow her. Who could resist such an offer, especially from such a fine girl? Amber was one of the most beautiful women I had ever seen. Not to mention, it was an opportunity to start a new life in Hollywood. I could also take the influencer gig seriously and become a celebrity.
However, I just couldn’t do it. My heart wasn’t fully in it and I’m not the type to do things if I’m not fully committed. So, I told her no. It was one of the hardest things I ever had to do.
She was hurt and disappointed as I was but it had to be done. She left without telling me and cut me off completely. I don’t blame her because our brief relationship was intense and she probably hoped it would lead to something bigger.
