I work as HR for one of the leading companies in the country. It’s a good job but it comes with a few setbacks. For instance, everyone assumes that I can get them a job at the company. From relatives to friends, everyone is always asking me to get them a job which can be annoying since I have no control over who gets hired. The most I can do is take their resumes and forward them to the relevant departments. However, this doesn’t stop them from asking me for a job every time they see me. I’ve had to avoid going to family events because I can’t enjoy myself without someone asking if we’re hiring.
It’s been hard for me to make genuine connections because I always feel like people want something from me. I prefer to stick to myself and spend most of my time alone to avoid disappointment. However, after a long time, I met someone I felt comfortable with.
Evans lived in my estate and we bumped into each other a couple of times. He used to stare at me whenever he saw me but never talked to me. So, I got the hint that he liked me and after finally mastered the courage to spark up a conversation.
“Do you live around here?” I asked.
“Yeah, I’m renting an apartment with a friend of mine.”
“Really? So, you have a roommate?”
“Yes, I lost my job a few months ago and had to move in with a friend.”
“I’m sorry about that.”
“It’s fine. I’m a survivor. By the way, do you mind joining me for dinner tonight?” He asked.
I accepted his offer but asked him to come over to my place instead.
“I’m more comfortable in my house,” I said.
“That’s fine. I can come and prepare the food at your place.”
“No, don’t worry yourself. I can order some food when you come.”
He showed up later that night with a shopping bag full of fruits and other groceries.
“Since you didn’t want me to cook, here’s my gift.” He said handing me the bag.
“Wow, thank you. I can’t remember the last time someone brought anything for me.” I said slicing some fruits and putting the rest away.
“You’re welcome.”
“Feel at home. You can put whatever you want to watch.” I said.
He put on an RNB playlist then walked around the living room looking through everything. He then stopped at my desk and looked at my books.
“Are you a student?” He asked.
“No, I’m employed.”
“What do you do?”
“I’m a HR manager.”
“Nice. Are you the one who walk around with a huge water bottle?” He asked and we both burst into laughter.
We spent hours talking but he didn’t bring up my job again that night. It was a surprise since most people who were in his position would have asked me to help them get a job. I enjoyed his company so much that I agreed to go on an official date with him.
“Can we go on an official date?” He asked.
“I’d love to. Where do you suggest?”
“Well, there’s a good spot around here. I hope you don’t mind going to a local.”
“Of course not,” I replied.
I don’t know what happened between the time he left my place to the time we met but Evans was different during the date. He came dressed in a work shirt and pants which looked out of place since it was a Saturday and everyone was in jeans.
“You look so nice.” He said.
“Thanks. Why are you so dressed up?”
“I’ve actually come from a job interview.”
“On a Saturday?”
“Yes, a friend of mine told me that their company was having interviews today. By the way, is there a job opening at your company?” He asked.
“I don’t think so and even if there was, I don’t know if you’re qualified,” I answered with a slight attitude.
His question caught me off guard but I brushed it off and tried to have a normal date. However, Evans kept reminding me that he was looking for a job any chance he got.
“You’ve really insisted on this job thing. I don’t even know what you do.”
“I can do everything and anything.” He said.
“That’s not an answer. Anyway, I thought we were having a date. How has it turned into a work thing?”
“Sorry. I just wanted to let you know that I’m open to any job.”
“Okay, but this isn’t the place or the time. Honestly, I expected more from you. It’s a Saturday afternoon and the last thing I want to think about is work.”
“I was just taking advantage of the opportunity.”
“Do you know how many people ask me for a job? I have had to block them from my phone. If I knew you were one of them, I wouldn’t be here.”
Evans looked embarrassed and tried his best to defend himself but there was no excuse for his actions. He made me question his motives for asking me out and though he insisted that he was genuinely interested in me, I couldn’t help but feel like he had hidden agendas.
I knew that I wouldn’t go on another date with him. However, Evans had made a good impression on me. Before leaving, I decided to give him some tips on how to get hired.
“I’ll give you some tips for your next job interview.”
“Really? Thank you so much. You don’t have to.” He said removing a notepad from his bag.
“You even came with a notepad,” I said then chuckled.
“I always carry one just in case.”
“No, you don’t.”
We talked for another hour until he felt confident enough that he would do well in his next job interview.
“You’ve really helped me out. Thank you. I’ll definitely take you on another date when I get a job even though you hate me.” He said jokingly.
He got a job soon after our date and he took me out to a nice dinner as promised. Though he tried to hit on me, I didn’t feel the same way about him and we remained good friends.
