After a month of sulking and mourning the end of her relationship with George, Kui was determined to get over him. They had dated for two and a half years, two beautiful years; the last half a year had been spent arguing and fighting over many things. George had gotten a better-paying job, and with it came the urge to entertain girls and party harder than usual. Suddenly, Kui couldn’t keep up with his new lifestyle.
George and Kui had struck a friendship immediately after completing high school. They met through a mutual friend and then discovered they lived close to each other. Their romantic relationship didn’t start immediately because George went to study outside the country for two years. However, they stayed in contact and became good friends. They dated other people during that time and often shared their relationship stories.
Soon after George returned, they started to spend more time together and eventually started dating. Their friendship formed a good foundation for their relationship since they already knew what the other person liked, and it made their dating process easy. Within that period, George had short contract jobs, but he still hoped to get his dream job at a big firm in the city.
Kui helped him with the applications, and they prayed relentlessly for George to get the job. Two years later, their prayers were answered, and George got an invitation to an interview. While George consulted others who had interviewed or worked with the company, Kui was looking for the perfect interview outfit for George. As a supportive girlfriend, she researched the best suit and tie colours to make an impression on a potential employer. Of course, they also had to be colours that went well with George’s complexion. With all hands on deck and a little help from the man upstairs, George was bound to get that dream job. And he did.
The problems in their relationship started almost immediately after he got the job. Weekends became a time to hang out with his colleagues, who always had women with them. As a result, Kui was no longer welcome to party with George. He also had no time left to spend with her. The phone calls got fewer, and their conversations became even shorter. Eventually, Kui discovered that George was seeing someone else.
When she confronted George, he didn’t deny it, marking the official end of their relationship. Kui felt physical pain in her chest when George confirmed her suspicions. She was so angry when she remembered how earnestly she had hoped George would get his dream job, but instead of being a blessing to them, it triggered a chain of events ending with her in emotional pain. It didn’t help that they had loved each other publically on social media and in their circles, so everybody knew about their breakup.
She spent the first two weeks indoors, trying to avoid people. Meanwhile, George was flaunting his new girl on his socials. Kui had to go off social media to avoid seeing any photos of them. Some of the pictures and videos would surface on their mutual friends’ timelines since George had already introduced the new girl to his friends.
A month after the breakup, Kui’s girlfriends picked her up to have fun. While out, she bumped into a guy she had always thought was cute, and they decided to have a few drinks together. They also took pictures. One of George’s friends saw the pictures and showed them to George, remarking that it was a good thing that they both were moving on. George did not like seeing Kui with the guy, so he texted her, expressing his displeasure. Kui angrily reminded him that he was the reason they were no longer together.
A few weeks later, Kui went on a date with another guy. They went to a café in a mall not too far from where Kui lived. Coincidentally, George was doing some shopping at the mall, and he saw them. Kui didn’t see him, and she enjoyed the date. The following day George called her, asking her to open the gate at Kui’s home because he wanted to talk to her. Surprised by the visit, Kui let him in.
“Hey, I like the new hairdo,” George told Kui.
“Thank you,” a confused Kui responded.
“I have missed you,” George told her.
“George, why are you here?”
“I saw you yesterday on a date and I wished I was the one you were sharing a meal with,” George responded.
“How do you know I was on a date? I didn’t post it anywhere. Secondly, didn’t you already find my replacement?” Kui asked angrily.
“She is not you Kui. I don’t want to see you with anyone else. You are mine,” said George as he got closer to her.
“I am not yours. You broke my heart unprovoked and got a new girl faster than I could say stay and then you want to act like I am the one hurting you?”
“Tell me you don’t miss me,” George responded.
“Then what happens if I miss you?” Kui asked him.
“We can be together in this moment. It’s just you and me, like the old times,” said George as he tried to kiss her.
“Can you leave me alone George? I will not be the girl you cheat with and you’re right about the old times, we are in the past. So, take your jealousy and horniness to your women,” Kui told him as she pushed him away, directing him to the door.
He showed up at her doorstep a few more times and contacted her every time she put a new picture looking happy or if he suspected she was out with a guy. Eventually, she blocked him, but occasionally, their mutual friends would mention that George inquired about her whereabouts. He also treated his new girlfriend poorly.
