She came in with puffy eyes and a troubled look. In the past year, Brian had only been one reason for this look. He had started as the perfect gentleman, but as with many love stories, he was just another frog in the pond.
“Spit it out. What has he done this time? I asked Mercy.
“Who?” Mercy responded.
“Who else? Brian. What has he done this time?”
“Oh babe, where do I start?” Mercy responded as she broke down in tears.
I had seen her cry over Brian over a hundred times, but this time it was different. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it yet.
“Enough with the tears, what did Brian do?”
“It’s not Brian, well, it’s not totally him. It’s his wife, Aisha.”
“What did she do?”
“More like what she plans to do,” said Mercy as she handed me her phone.
She showed me a text message, and there it was.
“Mercy, this is Aisha, Brian’s wife. You have been the source of my pain in my first year of marriage with him. I have heard your name come up in every fight and I’m tired. This is the only warning I’ll give you. Leave my husband alone or else I’ll make sure that your life is miserable. My ancestors are from Tanzania, I know how to ensure you’ll be on your period for the rest of your life. Stay away from my husband.”
“She’s going to bewitch you?” I asked Mercy in shock.
“Yes, Brian says she’s crazy enough to go through with it,” Mercy responded.
“Brian, the gift that keeps giving,” I rolled my eyes.
Brian and Mercy dated for about two years until Mercy found out he had been cheating. He was in the matatu industry, so he met many women. He had always been cordial with the ladies and claimed it was good for business. Mercy didn’t mind it because he hadn’t given her any reason to worry. However, towards the end of the relationship, he started being dodgy. He always had other plans with a “long lost relative” who suddenly resurfaced in town.
A month after the shift, Mercy got a message from a woman named Halima. She claimed to be dating Brian. She wanted to talk to Mercy. Mercy agreed to meet up. It wasn’t one of those “let’s talk woman to woman” conversations. Halima genuinely wanted to know what was going on because she doubted Brian. Mercy realized Halima was the “relative” he had been claiming he was reconnecting with over the past couple of weeks. They decided to confront him.
Halima told Brian to meet her at a particular place, and when Brian was there, Mercy joined them. Brian almost tried to deny it, but he had been caught. There was no need to lie. Three months after the incident, Brian got married to another woman, Aisha.
A light went out in Mercy when she learned that Brian had gotten married. Besides the betrayal with Halima, he had married another woman. Mercy wondered how long he had been with Aisha to warrant a wedding. As she wallowed in sadness, Brian started texting her again. He wanted to explain himself to her.
Brian apologized for the Halima issue but claimed Aisha was forced on him by his family. He was to travel to the Middle East for a while. So, his family decided he needed to get married before leaving and hopefully, his wife would conceive before he left so that in case something happened to him, they would still have a piece of him left.
She couldn’t understand that reasoning, but it didn’t even matter because he was a married man now. She told him off, but like clockwork, he reached out to her every month, either complaining about Aisha or professing his love.
“I came home today for lunch and found that Aisha had only cooked for one person. I remembered how you’d cook for me so effortlessly and I missed you,” Brian wrote to Mercy.
He would often send such messages. Once, he found the house in a messy state as Aisha had gone to spend time with her friends. Brian told her that Mercy would never have left the house like that. He did that a lot. He compared Aisha to Mercy a lot. Aisha felt she lived in Mercy’s shadow. In Brian’s eyes, she could never do anything right or match up to Mercy. She was tired, so to get back at Brian, she decided to make Mercy suffer.
“Brian, what’s going on with Aisha? She just threatened to bewitch me,” Mercy asked Brian.
“Mercy, I’m unable to love her the way I love you.”
“Brian, you cheated on me and then married a different woman. Where was this love when you were doing all that?”
“I told you what happened. I have tried to love her but you’re the one in my heart,” Brian professed.
“Brian! Can she bewitch me?”
“Yes, that woman can do anything.”
“Go and fix this. Stop talking about me and don’t contact me again. I’m not going to suffer because of you,” said Mercy angrily.
After she was done narrating what had happened, I asked her, “Do you really believe in witchcraft?”
“I don’t know and I would really like not to be the test subject. I’m so scared and angry at Brian,” Mercy said.
She then decided to call her mother for help in prayer.
