She works hard to have everything that she wants in her life. In an era where beautiful, and not so beautiful girls are graduates in knowing how to make a man open the wallet, she works for her own. She doesn’t work hard because she wants accolades. Neither does she do it because it makes her feel like a better woman. She works hard because she believes that’s what every adult should do.
Most of her time is spent on her laptop chasing paper in different currencies. But a girl has needs too. Being single and a workaholic leaves few options of where to find men. Thank heavens for online dating platforms for making finding people as easy as ordering pizza from the comfort of your couch. Well, maybe not that easy because there’s the talking stage to help you know who gives psychopath vibes straight off the bat and who proceeds to the next stage- your phone number.
However, like many employers will tell you, even with many rounds of interviews, you could still pick the wrong candidate. That was how Sharon met Tony. If there was one word to describe him it would be neat. He was good-looking, masculine, and tall but from his pictures, it was evident he was neat. Besides being hardworking, Sharon is neat so this was naturally attractive to her.
Furthermore, in most cases physically neat people mirror this organization in their lives. She was looking for someone to scratch an itch but that didn’t mean she was going to just play inky pinky ponky and pick someone. So she swiped right and the conversation started. Three weeks later they were set to hook up.
Given the option to meet up in a hotel or her house, her house sounded like a more convenient option. Having been in the online dating game for a while she knew the drill. She stocked up enough protection and refreshments. At 9.30 a.m. he texted he would be a little late because his car had issues so he’d have to find alternative means.
This wasn’t an office appointment so Sharon had no problem. In fact, she took the extra time to get some work done while she waited. Three hours later, Tony was here looking like a whole meal. They exchanged pleasantries and had a conversation to ease any awkwardness. While they were chatting Tony saw a gift bag Sharon had received with some chocolate. Without asking for consent he started going through the bag and helped himself to the chocolate.
This should have raised concern but Sharon decided to let it go. After what seemed like endless chit-chat, they got to the heart of the matter. It went well and got Tony talking a little more. Clinging to each other for warmth and basking in the aftermath of a good lovemaking session Tony looked into Sharon’s eyes as he gently stroked her cheeks with his fingers.
“I would be such a lucky guy if I ended up with you.”
“Why?” Sharon asked.
“Because I would be sure our kids would lack for nothing. You work so hard, we should play a drinking game every time you say you’re working.”
“Wow, is that a polite way of saying a workaholic?” Sharon mused.
“No, seriously, given my chilled vibes you’d be the perfect partner for me. I wouldn’t have to worry about buying land or kids going to a good school-you’d have that figured out,” he said as he stared into oblivion.
The last sentence caught Sharon off guard that she zoned out a bit questioning all the moments that had led her to this moment.
“Am I giving off sponsor vibes?” She wondered.
She was brought back to the conversation when Tony started rambling about how much he hated capitalism.
“Don’t you just hate the pressure of making money and being a slave to work?” Tony asked Sharon.
Before she could even answer he went on to say, “For me, I just go with the flow. I have decided I will not let myself get caught up in the endless cycle of pressure.”
“And by going with the flow waiting for your partner to finance things?” That’s what Sharon was thinking but there wasn’t any need to get into this conversation. After all, it was evident that this was a one-off. Tony got a call requiring him to leave immediately much to Sharon’s relief.
“Let’s talk and see when we can do this again,” said Tony as he left.
That conversation left a lot on Sharon’s mind. While she was sure she didn’t want a man who depended on her she also questioned why it left such a bad taste yet women have said similar things for many years.
Tony consistently texted her over the next three months complaining that she worked too hard and she needed to relax a bit. What he didn’t know was that she used the work excuse sometimes just to avoid meeting him again. It wasn’t until he sent a text in the middle of the night that she finally decided it was time to block him and end their interactions for good.
“Hey Sharon, you know with your work you’ll not find someone as good-looking as me with so much time for you. You’re not getting any younger, you know. Make time for me.”
When she woke up to that text in the morning, she knew it was time to put an end to it.
