For three years, I have been nothing but an adoring and faithful husband to my wife but I’m afraid she hasn’t been the same. When we met, she was the sweetest girl I had ever seen. She was a shy and soft-spoken girl who had just finished her campus education. It was rare to meet such a girl and I thought I had hit the jackpot. I went out of my way to impress her so she would be my girlfriend.
Slowly but surely, I won her over and she became my girlfriend. She would visit me regularly and spend weeks at my place. I saw a potential wife in her. She especially won me over with her cooking. As the saying goes, the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. She fed me well and cooked food that I had never eaten in my life. Her coastal roots came in handy.
“Who taught you how to cook like this?” I asked teasingly.
“My mother and aunties.” She replied.
“Have you ever thought of opening a restaurant?”
I wanted the whole world to experience her delicious food and I knew she had the skills to run a successful business. She may have been sweet and soft-spoken but she was a great salesperson.
Since she was thinking of quitting her current job, it was the perfect opportunity to start the business. With my support and encouragement, she quit her job to start the business.
The following day after quitting her job, she came over to my house with a bag full of groceries ready to start cooking.
“We can try it out with your office.” She suggested.
I had no idea that she was planning to start selling food at my office but I supported her, nonetheless. I didn’t doubt her capabilities either.
“They will love it. I always talk about your food.” I said.
Sure enough, her food was a hit. She continued to supply food to my office and other offices within the area for a whole year without fail.

We had been dating for two years at that point and I wanted to propose to her. However, rumours had started swirling about Joy’s faithfulness. Several men in the office had claimed that they had taken her out on a date. I didn’t pay much attention to them since I knew her and it was so unlike her character. Additionally, I was determined to make her my wife and was blinded by love.
In December, I took her to a luxurious hotel in Diani where I proposed to her. She agreed to be my wife but I could sense hesitation. To ensure that she didn’t run off, I suggested that we should visit her family since we were in her home county.
“That’s okay.” She said but she wasn’t as enthusiastic as I hoped.
We went to visit her parents and I was surprised to find out that she hadn’t even told them that she was dating me for two years. It was the first time that they were hearing about me. Despite helping her start her business and asking her to be my wife, she didn’t think that she should let her mother know about me.
As the love-struck man that I was, I swallowed that bitter pill In fact, I didn’t bring it up with her since the day really well and her mother liked me. That’s all that mattered.
We got married a few months after the proposal in an intimate but beautiful ceremony. My wife had asked for a small wedding since she wasn’t a fan of big crowds. That meant that I had to leave out a lot of my friends and relatives which caused an issue between us. Many of them didn’t even know that I was married until they saw my wedding pictures on social media.
Settling into marriage life was a bit of a challenge. Joy was obsessed with her business and I wanted to start building a family right away.
“I need to establish the business and hire someone first.” She said.
I gave her some time and she seemed like she was making progress. She even hired a few employees including a guy to help her with deliveries. She also moved the business from our apartment to a commercial space around the neighbourhood.
I never met her new employees but I trusted her judgment.
“The driver is a friend of mine from college.” She explained.
She seemed excited about the growth of her business which made me happy. For a moment, I stepped back and let her do her thing.

“Hey gorgeous, slept well?” A deep manly voice said which startled my wife.
She hung up the phone and then called back a few minutes later sounding very different from before. Her voice was high-pitched as if she was feigning excitement.
“Hi, babe.” She answered.
“Where are you?”
“I told you I attended a business workshop.”
“Who was talking to you?”
“Oh, he wasn’t talking to me. I’m having breakfast with other attendees. I’ll be back tonight.” She answered and then hang up.
It had been a few months since she moved her business and hired new employees. We hardly had time for each other and she spent most of the day at her business. Since she didn’t do the deliveries herself anymore, I didn’t see her during the day.
However, my colleagues started spreading rumours about my wife again. This time, they claimed that she was sleeping with her employee, the delivery guy.
I knew that they were jealous about my marriage because I not only married a beautiful, soft-spoken woman but also they weren’t invited to the wedding. Though I felt bad that I had to leave out many of my friends, I’m happy that I did if they could spread rumours about my wife.
When the phone call ended, I could hear my workmates whispering and chuckling as they looked at me.
“What are you laughing at?” I asked, trying to control my anger.
“Nothing. How is your wife?”
“She’s fine,” I answered even though I knew they weren’t asking about her well-being.
That day, her delivery guy didn’t show up to do the deliveries. Instead, another guy came by. This began to raise my suspicion.
