Drew always had big plans for himself. He wanted to be the first person in his family to be a millionaire and he was going to do anything to make that dream come true. There was only one small problem. He wasn’t academically gifted at all. From a young age, Drew struggled in class and it followed him all the way till he finished high school. No matter how hard he tried, he just couldn’t do well in exams. After high school, he knew that he wasn’t going to go to college so he took a different path which led him to meet Leah and her family.
He started off working as a bus filler, hoping that one day, a door would open and he would finally be on the right path. He would wake up early in the morning and then head to the bus station where he helped touts fill their vehicles. By around 8 am, he would have made enough to get him through the day. It was a tough job but he did it with a smile every day. He quickly rose through the ranks and within a short time, he formed a group of young men to fill the buses and he collected the profits.
When he started making a bit of money, he felt confident to start hitting on girls he saw passing by. He was good with the ladies and had earned a reputation among his peers as a ladies man but when he set his sights on Leah, his friends warned him not to waste his time.
“You can never get that kind of girl.” One of them said.
“Why not? I’m good-looking and I have money.”
“Those kinds of girls don’t just date men with money. They want university graduates. Do you have a university degree?” His friend asked sarcastically.
Drew didn’t let his friends discourage him. In fact, he was more determined than ever to show them that he was good enough for her. He made his move and sure enough, Leah fell for him. It was a short courtship. He said hi to her for a couple of days then asked her for her number and the rest was history. Shortly after, Leah was spending nights at Drew’s apartment.
Everyone was confused, even Drew. Leah came from a well-off family and knew so many men who were better off than Drew. However, she chose to date Drew and he didn’t want to know why.
Additionally, their relationship wasn’t a secret. She had already introduced him to her family since her father insisted that he needed to know anyone that she was dating.
“Where do you live, Drew?” Leah’s father asked.
“I live not so far from here in Ruaka.”
“Ooh. I usually go there to get my car washed. We should meet one of these fine days and talk as men.”
“I’d love that,” Drew answered thinking that he was simply making small talk.
A few days later, he received a call from Leah’s father informing him that he was in his area.
“I’ll be there in a few minutes.” He replied.
Drew dashed to his apartment, took a quick shower, changed clothes, and then went to meet Leah’s father. They chatted for a bit before things got tense.
“I know who you are and what you do.” Her father said sternly. “For whatever reason, my daughter likes you so I want to make you an offer. Come and work for me and you can continue dating her.”
Drew was quiet for a moment as he took in what Leah’s father said.
“Let me think about it.” He answered.
That evening, Leah went to Drew’s apartment and found him deep in thought.
“What’s wrong?”
“I met your father today.”
“That’s nice. Did he tell you?” She asked excitedly.
“He did but I don’t know if I want it.”
“You don’t want the baby?” She asked
“What baby?”
“I’m pregnant. I thought that’s what you talked about. I asked him if you could move in and work for him so you would be able to take care of us.”
“What? I didn’t know about all that. He just asked me if I wanted to work for him.”
“Oh.. well, what do you think?”
“Do I have a choice?”
“Not really? But don’t worry. We have a nice guest house where we’ll be staying.”
It was a bit scary for Drew. Though he knew it was the best opportunity he had, he was nervous that Leah’s family would treat him like a lesser being since he was not from a rich family.
Nonetheless, he accepted the offer and moved into Leah’s family guest house. The family was very accommodating to him and treated him like he was part of the family. However, Drew couldn’t shake the feeling that he didn’t belong and didn’t deserve what he had. He felt that he didn’t deserve to live in a nice house in a leafy suburb and he didn’t deserve his job or Leah and their baby.
The suburban life was also very different from what he was used to. He spent most days in an office or at home which was driving him to the edge. Eventually, he decided that he didn’t want to live like that for the rest of his life.
When the whole family was away, he packed his bags and left, never to be seen again. Leah and her family looked for him for weeks thinking that something bad had happened to him but their efforts bore no fruit and they gave up. As her due date drew closer, she finally accepted that she was going to be a single mother.
Years went by without a word from Drew. Then all of a sudden, Leah received a message asking how their daughter was doing. She calmly called Drew and they talked for over an hour. Though he still didn’t disclose where he was, Leah was hopeful that she would reconcile with him or at least have a cordial relationship so they could co-parent.
