My love story with Trisha was something out of a fairytale except I wasn’t a Prince Charming. She was definitely a princess who had grown up in the lap of luxury. Her father was a rich man who gave her and her siblings the best life he could. I could tell from the moment I saw her at an eatery I used to frequent that she was more well-off than I was. In fact, my friends tried to warn me not to date that kind of girl but I took my chances.
I may not have been a Prince but I was definitely charming and I planned on working my magic until she fell for me. To my surprise, Trisha was friendly and down to earth which made my work easier. The conversation flowed effortlessly and before I realized it, several hours had passed.
“I need to go home but I’d love to see you again.” She said in a deep raspy voice.
We exchanged a few more words and before she left, she gave me her number so we could keep in touch. I watched her as she walked to her car and drove off before returning to my friends who couldn’t believe what had unfolded in front of their eyes. I was in disbelief too and had to look at my phone occasionally to remind myself that it was real.
When I got home, I got in touch with her and we continued our conversation for hours. From that moment, I knew that she was the woman who I would spend the rest of my life with.
We bonded over our life experiences and how different our backgrounds were.
“Babe, do you know that when you were enjoying three-course dinners, I was probably going to bed hungry?” I mentioned it jokingly.
“I know, but look at you now. You’re a successful businessman and you can afford to eat as many meals as you want.”
Despite our different upbringings, Trisha loved me unconditionally. She never made me feel any less of a man because I wasn’t rich enough to take her on shopping sprees in Paris like some of her peers who married wealthy men. On the contrary, she cherished the small gifts I got her since they came from a place of love and not a form of bribe. She even went as far as to offer her support when I needed it.
When one of my friends was getting married, she lent her car as well as donated some money for the wedding day. My friends went from thinking she was a diva to referring to her as my wife.
Our relationship was as real as it gets and after dating for two years, we decided to take things to the next level.
“What do you think about getting married?” I asked her.
She was silent for a while then said, “I think you should meet my family first.”
“Of course. I need your father’s blessing.” I replied enthusiastically.
However, I was nervous to meet her family since I didn’t know if they would accept that their daughter wanted to marry a man who wasn’t rich. I had heard a lot about Trisha’s father and I knew that he intended for his daughter to marry a rich man. However, Trisha assured me that I could change his mind since I was hardworking and ambitious. Besides, Trisha was a kind-hearted woman and I assumed that the rest of her family would be like her.
We set aside a date for the occasion and I started planning for it immediately since it was short notice.
“My father wants us to go next week,” Trisha informed me.
“That’s so soon.”
“I know but at least he’s eager to meet you.”
The week was chaotic but I managed to make myself presentable for the event.
Trisha offered to drive me to her parents’ home but I declined. Though she had a nicer car than I had, I decided to go with mine since I was proud of my achievements even if they didn’t seem like much, they reminded me of how far I’ve come in life. Trisha was reluctant but she agreed, nonetheless.
We were in good spirits as we headed to her parents’ home but as soon as we got there, Trisha’s demeanor changed. She didn’t talk much and it was like I was thrown to the wolves. However, I was used to being in highly stressful situations so I managed to keep my cool.
“So, you’re the Mathew I’ve heard so much about?” Her father asked while shaking my hand.
“Yes, I am.”
He introduced his wife and Trisha’s sister then took me to the backyard where he was grilling meat.
“Do you know how to grill meat?” He asked. “It’s the tradition in my family for the man of the house to grill meat when they host.”
“Of course I do. I used to work in a butchery.”
“Really? What do you do now?”
“I have a touring company.”
“Interesting. Does it make you good money?”
“Yes. I make a decent living.”
“So, when are you going to buy a better car? My daughter can’t be driven around in a Subaru.”
I laughed awkwardly but Trisha’s father gave me a look that sent shock through my body.
“Hopefully, soon. I know Trisha deserves better and…”
“She does deserve better. I’m happy that she found love and you seem like a decent young man but I don’t want her to settle. So, I will spare your time and let you know that she’s not going to get married to you.”
I could feel my head spinning but again, I stayed calm and composed.
“Is it because I’m not rich like some of her friends’ husbands?” I asked almost timidly.
“Yes. I know she sees your potential but she has expensive taste. She likes to travel, which she hasn’t done since she met you. She might be excited to get married but once that excitement wears off, she’ll come to her senses and divorce will follow. It’s my job as her father to stop such things from happening to her.”
Once he explained, his attitude towards me made more sense. He didn’t necessarily hate me because I wasn’t rich. He was just trying to protect his daughter. The lunch after that conversation was awkward but I made it through.
Trisha and I broke up a few months after meeting her family but remained friends. She focused on finding a life partner while I focused on growing my company and we’re both thriving. She got married a year after we broke up to a childhood friend who came from a rich family.
