A day before Natasha and Peter’s wedding, her mother told her that the best way to ensure that a marriage lasts is to always communicate and tell the truth. Natasha, who was too excited about being a bride, didn’t bother to take note of that advice.
Natasha and Peter met in a matatu. The minute Peter spotted her he knew that he had to talk to her and ask her out on a date. However, since he was shy the easiest way to start a conversation was to offer to pay her fare. True to his thoughts, the gesture made it easier for them to talk. Once they arrived, he asked for her number, and they parted ways. A few days later, he mustered up the courage to call her and ask her out.
They went on one date and hit it off. The best thing about their relationship was that Peter loved Natasha more. For this reason, she never questioned his feelings for her. Their relationship was blissful until Peter got the opportunity to work for a company in the UK. Although Natasha knew that she would miss him a lot, it was the opportunity of a lifetime, so she supported him. A month later, she found out that she was pregnant. Peter and both their families were overjoyed but Natasha felt like her life was over.
There was so much she had anticipated to do before becoming a mother and now her plan was ruined. Nevertheless, she tried her best to remain positive. Peter’s parents advised him to marry her as soon as possible to avoid the child being born out of wedlock.
A few weeks after the news broke, he travelled back to Kenya and they both agreed to do a ruracio-style wedding. The planning process went smoothly and quickly since both families chipped in to help. After the wedding, Peter stayed for a week and then travelled back to the UK. Throughout her pregnancy journey, Natasha was surrounded by family. However, once she gave birth, everyone became busy including her husband.
They agreed that he would call every day to check in and then schedule a month’s leave so that he could travel back. Instead, Peter would call twice or thrice a week and eventually kept on postponing his trip. With time, Natasha started to feel like a single mother, and this stirred up feelings of regret.
When the baby turned three months, one of her aunties offered to stay with her for a short while. During their first weekend together, she advised Natasha to go out and enjoy herself. She knew the pressures of motherhood and felt that her niece needed time to blow off some steam. Little did she know that Natasha would make a habit of going out every weekend. Sometimes she would even make up stories about work.
The worst part was, she would switch off her phone once she stepped out of the house. During one of her nights out, she started flirting with a random man and ended up going to his place. The next morning, Natasha woke up with a bad hangover and was completely naked in a bed she didn’t recognize.
“This can’t be happening!” She thought to herself as she struggled to look for her clothes.
Once she was able to locate her clothes, she dressed quickly and left before her mystery man could leave the bathroom. During the Uber ride home, Natasha took time to reflect on what she had done. She knew that the right thing to do was to be honest with Peter. However, she remembered the saying “What they don’t know will never hurt them.”
From that day onwards, Natasha changed her behaviour as she tried to avoid the guilt she was feeling. A month after the incident, Peter decided to take his long overdue leave and travel back to Kenya. In an attempt to make up for the months he missed out on, he offered to spend more time with their baby. Natasha, who was now overjoyed with the thought of having easier days, didn’t seem to notice that he was avoiding her.
The days went by fast and before they knew it Peter only had one week left. Luckily for Natasha, it was her birthday week, and she was happy to spend it with him. Peter took the initiative to make her day special by planning a party for her and buying multiple gifts. Natasha anticipated that they would also spend the night together. She had not had sex for two months and the urge was killing her. Unfortunately, Peter had an impromptu meetup and had to leave at 7 p.m. Although she was disappointed, he had still made her birthday special, so she decided to let it go.
The following morning, she woke up to find that Peter’s side of the bed was empty. As she grabbed her phone to call him, she realized that his phone was on his bedside table.
“He must be downstairs or in the baby’s room,” She thought to herself.
Just as she was about to get out of bed, a message popped up on his phone. Natasha wasn’t one to snoop but by the time she grabbed the phone, it was hard to avoid reading the text.
“I had so much fun last night. Please don’t forget to send me money for the morning-after pill,”
“Peter!” She called out angrily.
“Did you forget that we have a baby who is still sleeping,” Peter asked as he tried to close their son’s room slowly.
“What is the meaning of this?” Natasha asked while holding up his phone.
“The real question is what are you doing with my phone in the first place?” He asked.
“Here, you forgot to send your one-night-stand money for the morning-after pill,” She said as she handed him his phone.
“You need to learn to mind your own business,” He replied.
“Excuse me? You’re the one that cheated on me on my birthday,” She said.
“It hurts, doesn’t it? To know that the person you love has zero regard for your feelings,” He said.
“Huh?” She asked.
“How do you think I felt when I learnt that my wife was not picking up my calls because she was out drinking and cheating on me?” He said.
“I didn’t plan to sleep with him. Also, how did you even find out?” Natasha said.
“But you didn’t see the need to be honest with me. When you started the habit of switching off your phone, I hired someone to follow you,” He replied.
“You stopped caring about me and I had to raise our baby alone. I just wanted to blow off some steam and ended up making a mistake,” Natasha said.
“If only you would have been honest with me, we wouldn’t have reached this point,” He responded.
Natasha tried her best to contain her tears. She never thought that her mistake would push her husband this far. Before she could utter another word, their son started crying and Peter left to go soothe him. The two didn’t talk to each other for the rest of the day. Later in the evening, Peter went out again, this time he didn’t bother to give her a heads-up. The next day Natasha woke up to find him packing.
“You still have three more days,” She said.
“Yeah, but I want to travel early to sort out a few things,” He said bluntly.
“Please can we just talk about what happened?” Natasha asked.
“What’s left to talk about Natasha? You cheated on me and I did the same as a form of revenge. There’s no going back from that,” he replied.
Natasha opened her mouth to reply but realized there was nothing she could say to stop him from leaving. Peter sent her a text the moment he landed but didn’t call or text for four days. During that time Natasha avoided telling anyone what had happened between them. She assumed that he needed space and then they would be able to sort out their issues.
The following week he called and informed her that given what had happened he thought it would be best to separate. Since their child was still young, he would continue to pay rent and take care of other bills. However, during his next leave, he would travel back to Kenya so that they could deal with getting divorced. For the first time, Natasha was speechless and at that very moment, she remembered the words her mother had said to her. Sadly, it was too late.
