The Singlehood Series: His Dad Was My Gynaecologist

It was hard not to think about my gynecologist every time I talked to Andrew but I put that aside since I liked him.

What would you do if you found out that your date happened to be your gynaecologist’s son? Some may say that it’s not a big deal. After all, your gynaecologist owes you the utmost discretion as his patient. That’s true but if you find yourself in that situation you will realize just how bad it is, especially if your date knowingly lied to you.

During a routine gynaecologist visit, I met a really nice guy at my doctor’s office. He introduced himself as Andrew and after a brief chat, we exchanged numbers and I went on my way.

I had no intention of being anything more than friends but Andrew grew on me. We talked on the phone for hours several times a week which made me realize just how amazing he was. He was so charming and sweet and I couldn’t get enough of him. He made me laugh every time we talked and I found myself quickly developing feelings for him.

However, I was still hesitant about going on a date with him even though he had asked me several times before. I couldn’t stop thinking of all the wrong things that could happen if I dated someone who worked for my gynaecologist. I knew that both my gynecologist and Andrew were professional people but it had taken me a lot of work to even see a gynecologist because I was insecure about my body.

“When are you going to go on a date with me? I’ve been asking you for weeks.” He said.

“I’d love to go on a date with you but I think it will be awkward. You work for my gynecologist.”

“I won’t bring up anything to do with work. I just want to spend time with you. You can’t deny that we have a lot of chemistry and it would be a shame if it all went to waste.”

“Fine, I’ll think about it but I can’t promise anything.”

I was ready to go on a date with him and knew that I was going to say yes but I had to keep him waiting. After a few days, I finally agreed to go on a date with him.

“When do you want to meet?”

“Anytime. Even right now.”

“Are you not at work?”

“I can leave. The doctor isn’t here.”

“Okay. Let’s meet in 2 hours.” I said.

After hanging up, I took a quick shower, got dressed then called an Uber to go to the restaurant. Andrew was already there drinking a cup of coffee.

I almost ran towards him when I saw him. It felt like I was meeting a long-lost friend. The feeling was clearly mutual. Andrew couldn’t stop complimenting me. He held my hand and didn’t want to let go until I had to ask.

“I’m sorry. I got a little carried away. Do you want to order something?”

“Of course. I’m hungry.”

I didn’t think it was that funny but Andrew laughed hysterically. He kept laughing a lot throughout the date even when I didn’t say anything funny which made me a little suspicious. I wondered if he had talked about me with the gynaecologist or if he had seen my file.

“What’s so funny?” I finally asked.

“Nothing. I laugh when I’m nervous.”

“Why are you nervous?”

“Because I’m on a date with a beautiful woman.” He said which made me relax.

The date was going great although I wasn’t completely comfortable. Andrew tried his best to make sure I was having fun but all I could think about was his work.

“So, have you ever checked a patient’s record?” I finally asked.

“I thought we weren’t supposed to talk about my work.”

“I’m too uneasy. I need to know what you do at the office.”

“Well, I’m actually Dr. Kimani’s son. I help him with accounting.”

“What? Why didn’t you tell me that you’re my gynaecologist’s son?”

I thought it was strange that he shared the same last name as my gynaecologist and he worked in the same office. However, it was a common name and assumed that it was simply a coincidence.

“I really like you and I knew if you found out that I was related to your gynecologist you wouldn’t want to see me again. You can’t imagine how many girls have refused to date me because my dad is a gynecologist.”

“It’s worse when you lie because I can’t trust anything you say again. I thought you were a good guy but this has changed everything.”

“I’m a good guy. I didn’t lie. I just didn’t tell you everything about me.”

He tried to explain himself but the damage had already been done. Even if I wanted to give him a chance, I couldn’t trust him again and I would always feel insecure around him.

“What if I quit my job?” He asked desperately.

“It won’t make a difference.”

“So, I was right. You wouldn’t have even given me your number if you knew who my dad was.”

“Yeah. I wouldn’t have. I don’t like that you tried to seduce me. I’ve wasted a lot of time talking to you on the phone.”

“I don’t think it was a waste of time since I got to know an amazing person and I hope that you feel the same way.”

I felt bad since we got along so well and it was like losing someone I had known for years. To make matters worse, I had to find another gynaecologist who I felt comfortable around since I couldn’t continue going to the office.

I considered turning a blind eye and giving him a chance. However, it just didn’t feel right. I didn’t want to be reminded of my gynecologist every time.

I wanted things to end amicably since we had gotten along so well. However, he kept calling and texting me and I had to block him. It took me a while to find another gynaecologist and when I did, I had to do a thorough check to make sure that none of his relatives worked for him.
