When Ken and I bumped into each other, I didn’t know what to expect. It had been years since I last saw him and a lot of things had changed. For starters, we were no longer the naive teenagers we used to be 10 years ago. Ken was a professional chef and I was an advocate of the High Court. We were both proud of our achievements and to show off the fruits of his hard work, he invited me to his place to try his food.
After meeting Ken, I felt like I had met someone who had come back from the dead. I never thought that our paths would ever cross again when he left to study culinary arts in the UK, especially since he went to work on a cruise ship after graduating and didn’t come back to the country for 10 years. A lot of things had happened and I couldn’t wait to hear about all his travel experiences.
One of my close friends, Vivian, was also excited about Ken’s return. She always wanted me to date him and since we were both single she thought this was my opportunity. To be honest, I was on the same page as she was. Ken was my childhood crush and seeing him again rekindled those feelings.
“You guys would be such a cute couple.” My friend said.
“I know. I didn’t even think it was possible for him to become more handsome.”
“He’s the perfect guy for you, especially the way you like food.” She commented and then we laughed.
She was right, though. I loved food and took pride in being a foodie. My favourite hobby was trying new restaurants so you can imagine my excitement to finally hang out with a professional chef.
“What is he going to cook for you?” Vivian asked.
“I don’t know. I don’t care, actually. Whatever he makes will be delicious.”
“Aww.. you really like him. By the way, what about Charles?”
Her question caught me by surprise. I hadn’t thought about what Ken’s brother, Charles would say when he saw me hanging out with his brother.
Since he had just come back, Ken still didn’t have his own apartment and was staying with his older brother. His brother and I had dated briefly in the past but things ended amicably and we remained friends.
However, Ken didn’t know about this and I wasn’t planning on telling him. I didn’t think it was relevant since it was a long time ago and it was nothing serious. Additionally, it would only make things awkward between us and I planned on maintaining a good relationship with him.
I messaged Charles and asked him not to tell Ken about our relationship which he agreed.
“I wasn’t even going to.” He replied. “He told me that you’re coming for dinner tomorrow.”
“Yeah. Will you be around?”
“I will but I’ll give you guys some privacy.”
“Okay. Thank you.”
With that in mind, I breathed a sigh of relief knowing that the day would go great. I got ready and headed to their apartment where I was welcomed by the smell of delicious food cooking.
“Wow, it smells so good here,” I said to Ken as we hugged.
He invited me in and we went straight to the kitchen where I watched him work his magic. Charles came to the kitchen once to say hello then went back to his bedroom to give us space.
We were having a good time catching up on lost time as Ken prepared the food.
“Why didn’t you make a move on me when we were younger?” I asked him which caught him off guard.
“I thought you were out of my league. You were and still are so beautiful.” He confessed.
I was flattered that he found me attractive and it seemed like he was finally going to ask me out. However, Charles came into the kitchen just when he was about to pop the question.
“Is the food ready?” He asked.
“Almost. We can go and sit down as we wait for it to cook.” He said to me and we went to the living room leaving Charles in the kitchen.
I didn’t want to bring up the dating issue again because it would make me look desperate. We sat silently before Ken suggested that we should watch a movie.
After 30 minutes, Ken got up and went to check on his food.
“Food is ready.” He said from the kitchen and I dashed to serve myself.
I had been eagerly waiting to try his food and finally, the moment had come. I served large portions because I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed. It already looked and smelled appetizing.
After serving I made my way to the kitchen and waited for Ken to join me.
“Charles, are you coming to eat?” He asked.
“I’ll eat later.”
Ken served himself and then came to sit next to me.
“Have you tasted it?”
“Not yet.”
“Go ahead.”
I took a mouthful but I was instantly overwhelmed by the way it tasted. It was so salty that I couldn’t swallow it. I spat it out and took a sip of water then looked at Ken who looked horrified.
“What’s wrong? Is it too hot?”
“It’s so salty.”
“That can’t be. I tasted it and it was perfect.”
He then took a bite and pretended that it was delicious.
“It’s good.”
“I’m sorry but I can’t eat it,” I said.
“That’s so rude. I have been cooking for hours just for you to refuse to eat my food. This is why I never made a move on you. You were always so full of yourself.” He complained.
“You’re insulting me just because I don’t like your food. Maybe you need to adjust your recipe.”
“I have cooked for celebrities and billionaires. Maybe you need to learn what good food tastes like.”
We argued for a while before I left. Ken and I didn’t talk after that. However, his brother reached out to me a few months later and confessed that he added more salt to the food since he knew his brother would be offended if I didn’t like the food.
Even though I found out the truth, Ken had said a lot of hurtful things to me that day and I didn’t want anything to do with him.
