Sharon always found Nick’s sense of responsibility very appealing. She noticed that on the day they met. It was on a cold July night. She was out with her friends when this group of friends came in and sat at the next couple of tables to their right. You could tell they had started the party at a different venue from their energy. Nick stood out because he cared for those who had taken a little too much. He covered them with their coats or took them outside the club.
Sharon noticed him because she was doing the same for her crew since she was on medication so that she could indulge in alcohol that night. She hadn’t realized that Nick had been checking her out until she walked outside to get a bite.
“Getting something to recharge as you get back to your chaperoning job?” A deep baritone voice asked her from behind.
Sharon turned. Nick was standing behind her, and he towered above her. She hadn’t noticed how tall he was until that moment. He smelled as good as he sounded too.
“That would make two of us it would seem,” Sharon responded.
“As luck would have it, my shift is over, can I get you something to drink or eat?” Nick asked.
He bought Sharon something to eat, and they decided to get back to the club. They chose seats that were in the eye’s view of their friends so that they could still keep an eye on them. There wasn’t any awkwardness between them, and they shared a lovely conversation until four a.m. when Nick told Sharon that he had to go home because he needed to take his daughter to church hours later. He took Sharon’s number and asked her to inform him once she was home safely.
Later Sharon and her friends decided to go home. She chose not to text Nick because she felt it was inappropriate since she figured if there was a daughter, there was also a wife. With that thought, she went to bed. She was woken up by her phone’s ringing at around ten o’clock. She could barely see her screen when she answered the call.
“Hello,” Sharon said in a groggy voice.
“Hey sleepyhead, glad to hear you got home well,” said Nick.
Sharon recognized the baritone voice and woke up fully.
“Oh, hey Nick,” she responded.
“She remembers me, that’s a good start. What happened to letting me know when you got home?” Nick asked.
“Were you able to take your daughter to church on time?” Sharon asked, ignoring his question.
“Yeah, I’m waiting for her to finish up and take her for early lunch,” Nick responded.
“She goes to church alone?” Sharon asked.
“I’m at the church’s parking so she’s technically not alone. And we take turns bringing her to church with my baby mama. You know you can ask what you really want to ask by the way,” Nick said to Sharon.
“So you’re not together with your daughter’s mum since you referred to her as your baby mama, I would assume?” Sharon asked.
“No, we’re no longer together but we co-parent. I hope that’s not going to be a problem because I was hoping to take you out later in the afternoon,” Nick told Sharon.
Sharon felt relieved when he clarified his marital status and agreed to meet him. That was the beginning of their relationship. Nick turned out to be like one of the guys you read in romance novels. He was attentive to her and her needs. He was thoughtful and would make any dull day brighter in many ways. Once, she complained about the coffee in the office, and he sent her coffee to the office for the next two weeks.
Their relationship got more intense over time. Since Nick loved travelling, he often invited Sharon to join him. During their time together, Nick took care of Sharon. He was the kind of man you didn’t have to worry about anything around because he had already thought about it. Sharon felt safe around him.
Everything was going well until Nick had to travel outside the country for work. Sharon saw Nick’s car two days after he had left. Her first thought was that Nick had lied about travelling until she saw a female driver inside. She immediately took a photo and sent it to Nick.
“Who’s driving your car?” She asked.
“That’s most likely my baby mama, so it’s easier to move around with my daughter,” Nick responded.
Sharon didn’t inquire further, but she felt unsettled. Everything else Nick had done so far wasn’t suspicious, but his relationship with his baby mama troubled her for some reason. She decided it was best to converse with Nick once he returned.
He came back two weeks later. Sharon insisted she wanted to pick him up from the airport because she was dying to see him. Nick argued that it was unnecessary and would take a cab home. Sharon asked if she could meet him at his place since she had never been there. After typing for what Sharon felt was an eternity, Nick responded, “Babe, it’s not possible to come to my place at the moment.”
“Why?” Sharon asked.
“My daughter and the mother are there,” Nick responded.
“So, you left her your car and she is in your house? Is there something I am missing here?”
“It’s not what you think. Once we realized we weren’t working out as a couple, we decided to end that part of our relationship but we still live in the same house because I wasn’t going to be a part-time parent to my child. I didn’t want to see her on weekends or have such arrangements. Living in the same house allows me to be a present dad but my baby mama live separate lives,” Nick replied.
Sharon went silent. She couldn’t wrap her mind around that information. That was when she decided to discuss her concerns with her friend.
“Hey, Bree, I need advice from you because you’re the most progressive person that I know,” Sharon told her friend.
“Shoot,” Bree responded.
“What do you think about co-parents living in the same house?” Sharon asked.
“Is it a temporary arrangement as one plans to move out?”
“No, it doesn’t sound like it is,” Sharon told Bree.
“Why are they living together in the first place if they are not together romantically?” Bree asked.
“Apparently, so that both can be present for their child,” Sharon responded.
“So what happens if one of them gets into a serious relationship or gets another child? Do they all live together?” Bree asked.
“I hadn’t even thought past the idea that they are still together,” Sharon responded.
“Obviously, that’s the first thought. I would tell you to keep away from that man. It’s bound to get messy,” Bree told Sharon.
Nick tried calling Sharon severally, but she ignored his calls until she had decided. Eventually, she answered his call. Nick tried to convince her that he did not have a romantic relationship with his baby mama and that their living arrangement was just convenient for both of them and the child, but Sharon was firm on her decision. She ended things with him unsure if he was telling the truth but confident that she didn’t like the potential complication of the situation.
