I heard rumours about Sabrina’s arrogance but chose to pursue her, regardless. After all, I was a firm believer that if it’s good, it won’t come easy. I was willing to go through a burning forest just to be with her. You see, Sabrina was one of the most attractive people I had ever seen and I had always wanted to make a move on her. However, I never mastered the courage to approach and it always seemed like she was in a relationship. Additionally, she had impossible standards that would intimidate anybody. For instance, I heard that she demanded a gift and asked whether your phone was an Android or iPhone before agreeing to go on a date with you.
Her standards were certainly intimidating for a young man just starting out in life. However, a few years had passed by and I was more financially stable to meet her expectations. I was confident that I would be able to make her mine no matter her alleged arrogant attitude. I didn’t waste time when I found out that she was single and searching.
“You won’t believe what I just found out.” My cousin said excitedly.
“What?”
“Sabrina is single. You should make your move now.” He advised.
“Are you sure? I don’t want to embarrass myself.”
“Yes, I am. This is your chance. You better move fast. Such girls don’t stay single for long.”
Finally, I could shoot my shot. I was a bit nervous about talking to her, though. I didn’t know how she would react and to be honest, I didn’t think I could handle being rejected by my dream girl. Nonetheless, I was hopeful that time had changed her attitude a little bit and that she had lowered her standards a bit.
“Hi, Sabrina.” I inboxed her on Instagram the same day I found out she was single.
It took a whole week for her to reply. In the meantime, I kept liking her photos and watching her stories so she could notice me. I was about to message her again when I got a notification from Instagram. I almost fell out of my chair when I saw her message.
“Hi. Do we know each other?” She asked.
“We have a few mutual friends but we’ve never met.” I lied.
We had actually met but I wasn’t able to introduce myself. She had attended an event that my cousin had organized and I recognized her immediately. However, she was with another guy who kept following her around and feeding her shots of tequila. By the end of the night, she was too drunk to have a conversation so I decided to try my luck another time. I never saw her again since that day but my cousin bumped into her several times since they’re in the same industry.
“Okay. What do you want?” She said and I immediately panicked.
I hadn’t thought of what I would say to her since a part of me thought she wouldn’t respond.
“How’s your week going?” I asked.
“It’s good. I’m busy though.”
Since the conversation was going badly, I decided to name-drop my cousin.
“Are you going to Luke’s event?”
“Yeah. How do you know Luke?” She asked.
“He’s my cousin.”
“Oh my God, you’re Brian. I knew you seemed familiar. Your cousin keeps telling me about you.”
“I hope he says good things about me.”
“Yeah. He’s always trying to hook me up with you.”
I didn’t know my Luke was talking about me to Sabrina or worse, trying to hook us up. However, she didn’t seem to mind.
After chatting for a while, we agreed to meet at Luke’s house vent over the weekend. I couldn’t wait to share the good news with my cousin.
“We’re meeting at the event on Saturday,” I told him.
“I’m proud of you, bro. Don’t forget to bring her a gift and you can borrow my iPhone if you want.” My cousin reminded me.
I was so excited about the news that I forgot Sabrina wasn’t just any other girl. She was the kind of girl that didn’t date anyone who didn’t use an iPhone. Nonetheless, I decided to be my real Android-using self since I wanted a real relationship with her. Additionally, I thought that my charm and looks were enough to make a good impression on her.
I dressed up in the best outfit I could find and then headed to the event. However, I stopped by a flower shop on my way and got Sabrina a bouquet of flowers just so I wouldn’t show up empty-handed. By the time I got to the venue, she hadn’t arrived yet but I assumed she was on her way.
She didn’t show up till around 9 pm when the event was almost over. I was a bit tipsy but I sobered up quickly when I saw her.
“You made it,” Luke said as he hugged her and then introduced me. “This is Brian.”
“Of course. It’s nice to meet you.” She said with the warmest smile.
“Do you want something to drink?” I asked
“Sure. I’ll have a cocktail and a shot.”
We went to the bar where I ordered two shots and a cocktail then removed my phone to pay for the order.
I heard Sabrina let out a loud gasp and thought that something had happened.
“Is that an Android?” She asked in disbelief.
“Yeah. What’s the problem?”
“How can a good-looking guy like you use an android?” She asked and laughed. “I can never be seen with someone who uses a cheap Android phone.”
“It’s not cheap, though.”
“I don’t care. It’s an Android. All Android phones are cheap and try to be like an iPhone.”
I knew that she preferred an iPhone over an Android phone but I didn’t think it was that big of a deal. She walked away and avoided me the whole night. I later found out that she was making fun of me for using an Android phone. It was embarrassing but I learnt my lesson.
I promised myself to stay away from girls like Sabrina since, even if I managed to fake it till I made it, she would still expect more from me and I would never be able to live up to her standards. My current type of girl is a bit simpler and interested in meaningful connections rather than superficial things.
