There’s something about people who go to the gym. It’s a mixture of seeing toned bodies that make for good eye candy and the positive energy from the dedication and determination that keeps them returning because staying consistent can be difficult. But Joy’s story wasn’t about that deep stuff; she took to Will because of his body.
Do you remember the controversial cooking oil advert a few years back with the couple lusting for each other and squashing tomatoes? Those were the images Joy had in mind when she looked at Will. Her heart raced as she watched Will lift and lower weights on the bench press. She had something to look forward to at the gym, which also made her consistent.
The gym became one of her favourite places. Soon, she began to feel Will reciprocate her energy. He was eight years older than her. His attention had a specific effect on her that she hadn’t experienced before. However, their interaction had a bit of a hiccup. Will had a baby mama who lived nearby. He explained that he had to move out when they broke up and couldn’t afford to move too far from his child. Somehow, he stayed in the neighbourhood because he had built community ties. It also made it difficult to date because his baby mama lived in the same area. At that moment, that explanation made sense to Joy. Frankly, there wasn’t much he’d have said that would felt like a red flag to her. However, she didn’t like the estate gossip, so they began seeing each other secretly.
A couple of months later, Joy moved to another neighbourhood, which made it easier for them to date. Their relationship flourished, and they did things like a normal couple. Joy’s gym routine didn’t survive the move, though. The dynamics of her ‘motivation’ had changed, and she no longer needed to go to the gym to see him.
A relationship founded on vanity quickly changed when Joy lost a parent. Will showed up for her in every imaginable way. He was there for her when she needed to cry and vent. He remained by her side weeks after the funeral when most people moved on with life. The incident brought them closer. They opened up to each other about more aspects of their lives. That included Will’s finances.
Joy had a good and stable job while Will ran a business. Sometimes, he would run low on cash and ask Joy for assistance. The requests entailed money for his child’s school fees and sometimes even rent since he paid rent for two houses. At first, he would refund the money after a good business period, but eventually, he stopped paying her back.
Lost in the euphoria of love, Joy assisted Will whenever she could. Naturally, she was a compassionate person, but she overextended herself with Will. She didn’t realize she had a problem with it until it was too late.
They had gotten so comfortable with each other that Will openly told her when he needed to do something that pertained to his baby mama. There was an incident where the baby mama was sick. Will had to watch over their child and also assist the baby mama. He went by in the evening and decided to spend the night preparing the child for school in the morning.
The following day, the baby mama’s condition hadn’t improved, so he took her to the hospital. They required some tests, and he was short of funds, so he asked Joy for the money. It was awkward, but she sent what she had. Will took the baby mama back home and spent one more night watching over both of them.
Joy was somewhat uncomfortable with the situation but couldn’t tell Will. She didn’t want to sound insensitive to the baby mama’s illness. She had also sent the money, which alluded to her being okay with how Will handled the situation.
While Joy struggled to pretend to be okay with the situation, Will had a different struggle. Spending time with the baby mama sparked something between them. It reminded them of the time they were a happy couple. Will had also been struggling to provide for two households, so the idea of having one was appealing.
It wasn’t an instant decision. He mulled over the idea for a couple of weeks. As he struggled with the thought, Joy was being passive-aggressive. Will was asking for more money, and she couldn’t hide her discomfort with the situation. Will’s baby mama was also building on the spark on the other side. In the end, Joy stopped assisting him financially, and it caused a rift between them. The rift nudged him to move back into the house with his child and baby mama.
