I have always wanted to try out the famous tacos, quesadillas and authentic guacamole at Mercado Mexican Kitchen and Bar so when the opportunity came to dine at Nairobi’s newest Mexican spot I grabbed it. Mercado is located in the heart of Westlands and it is housed at Kenrail Towers with a beautiful sign that lights up at night. If you were impressed by the sign as I was, wait until you step inside. The restaurant has a golden theme for their décor and a spacious interior where even on busy nights, like on the light we went, there is room for guests and servers to move around.
I perused the menu for a hot minute before settling for pork Picante which came with a side of fries and an assortment of sauces. Picante means spicy in Spanish so basically, Pork Picante is a spicy pork sandwich. Between the slices of bread was well-done seasoned shreds of pork, fried beans, onions and tomato slices. As per Mexican standard, the sauces were all spicy which you will enjoy if you are a fan of chilli and also gives the food added flavour. The vegetables and meat looked fresh and it was generally a delightful meal. The food came served in Mexican style plates staying true to the restaurant’s theme.
My date ordered a mouth-watering crispy snapper taco which came with a side of rice.
As for drinks, I ordered a glass of Choco Mint Margarita. From the name, you can only guess how good it tasted. Even from just the looks, I could tell it was about to be a party in my mouth. It did not disappoint at all. It comprised of tequila blended with hazelnut and mint flavoured milk for a rich taste which was garnished with melted chocolate and mint leaves.
The food was impressive and very filling. Everything came in a double portion at a very pocket-friendly price. Their food menu was impressive with a wide selection from seafood to vegetarian dishes while their drinks menu included classic Mexican drinks such as The Black Charo. The service was also welcoming and efficient. I would definitely add Mercado on my list of favourite places to eat in Nairobi and recommend a visit.
It was a pleasant night that ended with more guests streaming in well past 11 o’clock. As we walked out I admired the vibrant ambience and the Instagram worthy décor which I took full advantage of.
