I met a guy while I was on a night out with my girls and he instantly captured my attention. His friends asked if they could join our table and we agreed. He sat next to me and for the whole night, he didn’t take his eyes off me. At one point, my friend and I sneaked away to meet one of her many boyfriends but the guy kept calling and asking where I went. From that day, we remained inseparable until he had to go back to his country.
I usually fall in love very slowly. It’s rare for me to love someone on the first encounter and it was no different this time. On the other hand, Daniel fell in love with me the first time he saw me. He would call me every day, text me every minute and come over any chance he had. At first, I was a bit taken aback since I was used to men who didn’t show their affection as much.
He especially loved to cook for me. He would prepare the most delicious West African dishes for me and then invite me to eat at his place. If I declined, he would bring them to my house.
“I think I’m falling for this guy,” I told a friend.
“The Nigerian?” She asked.
“Yes, he’s so sweet and loving.”
“Be careful of those people. They know all the right words to say and do to make you fall in love with them.”
“Babe, this one is different. You remember he wasn’t loud and obnoxious like his other friends.”
“If you say so.”
By this time, I was completely in love. We had known each other for three months and it was the best three months of my life. Our relationship just felt easy. I didn’t have to fight for his love and he didn’t have to fight for mine. It just came naturally.
Shortly after, I got pregnant. It was scary since I wasn’t ready to be a mum just yet but he was supportive which made me more comfortable. The thing that made me more excited to have the child was that it was his first.
“You know this child will be loved so much because it’s my first.” He said.
Usually, many Nigerian men have children and even wives in their country which makes most girls scared of having a relationship with them. However, Daniel insisted that this was his first child and he didn’t have another family in his country. I believed him since he hadn’t given me a reason not to. Additionally, if he had another family, I would have known since we were living together.
As the months went by, I got to know some of his family members and he got to know mine. Things were going great and we couldn’t wait to have the baby.
I delivered safely and welcomed a beautiful baby girl. However, as soon as I had my baby, I noticed a change in Daniel’s demeanour. He seemed more distant and detached which was unlike him.
“What’s wrong, babe?” I asked him.
“There’s a problem back in my country.”
“What kind of problem?”
“My mother wants to see me.”
“Then go and visit her. We’ll be here waiting for you.” I naively told him.
He then turned and gave me a big hug then kissed our baby.
“I’m so lucky to have both of you.”
Soon after our conversation, he bought a flight ticket and was gone a few days later. We stayed in communication for the first few days but after, the communication slowed down.
“I’m at my mother’s home and the connection is bad here. I’ll call you when I go back to the city.” He explained.
I was very understanding since he had told me everything about himself including where he grew up. I felt like I knew him inside and out.
As promised, he called me a few days later and our communication was back to normal. We talked the whole day and I kept him up to date with the baby. He then invited me to visit him in his country.
“You need to come and meet my mother. She was asking about you.”
My heart skipped a beat. This was the confirmation I needed that Daniel was mine forever. I accepted the invitation and he sent me money for the flight.
When I got there, I noticed that Daniel wasn’t as bubbly and talkative as he was when we were on the phone.
“Get some rest. We’ll go visit my mother tomorrow.”
Early the next morning, he came to pick me up and we headed to his mother’s place. We arrived a few hours later and I noticed that there was some kind of party at the place. There was a big white tent full of people which made me nervous.
“What’s going on?”
“My family came to welcome you.”
I smiled thinking how sweet he was to invite his whole family to come and meet me. However, I soon learnt that there was another agenda.
After brief introductions, his mother stood up and was followed by another woman.
This is Daniel’s first wife.” His mother explained. “She must confirm whether you can be his second wife.”
“What? Second wife? I didn’t even know he had a first wife.”
“That’s not important. What’s important is that you’re here and you want to get married to my son.”
“I didn’t agree to be a second wife.”
“So you don’t want to get married?”
“I don’t.”
There was dead silence after I refused to marry Daniel. He then pulled me out and a huge fight broke out.
“You have embarrassed me in front of my family.”
“What about me? How do you think I feel?”
He refused to drive me back to the hotel and it was one of his brothers who I had met back in my country who offered to take me. I got to the hotel and packed my bag but I couldn’t leave since my flight was the following day. I had to stay there all by myself with a broken heart. Daniel didn’t call me that night and I was so tempted to text him but I resisted the urge.
The following day, he sent me a text apologizing for lying to me and promising to come and visit me in my country. To this day, I have never seen him and any attempt to contact him has been futile. At least I have my daughter who is the best thing to ever come from that relationship.
