“Do you ever think you will tell him what happened between you and his father?” My sister Irene asked.
I looked over at my son, who was playing with his toys. He was so full of life, just like his father.
“I’ll have to at some point, but I just don’t know where I’ll begin,” I replied.
“Well, at least you have a few more years to think about what to say,” She said.
“Yeah,” I replied.
It had been a while since I thought about Larry, but after that question, I looked back at what had happened between us. I met him at one of my friend’s get-togethers. At first, I never knew he was the son of a prominent person since I wasn’t much of a politics fan those days. He didn’t even look like someone who came from a wealthy background.
He was dressed so casually, the regular t-shirt, jeans and sneakers combination. However, he made it look so good since he was very attractive. When I spotted him at the party, he was sitting alone, looking at his phone. I assumed that the only person he knew was my friend Tiffany since it was the same case for me.
I got up from where I was sitting and joined him at his table.
“Let me guess; you’re not much of a social person?” I asked him.
He looked up at me and smiled.
“Is it that obvious?” He asked.
“Well, for someone who is also not a social person, yes, it is,” I replied.
“Larry,” He said, holding out his hand.
“Naomi,” I said as I greeted him.
We spent time talking and getting to know each other. From our conversation, I noticed that he also didn’t behave like someone from a wealthy background. This made me feel more attracted to him.
We went on a couple of dates after that day. I enjoyed his company because we always had so much to talk about. He was also very romantic, which made it easier for me to bond with him. He asked me to be his girlfriend a few months later, and I accepted.
Our relationship was like any other; it had its ups and downs, but we always found a way to deal with our issues. I felt like I had finally found someone I could be with long-term.
When our relationship clocked a year, I ended up pregnant. It was a shock to me, and my main concern was how I would be able to tell my parents. Larry decided it would be best if we told my parents and his at the same time. It would reduce the pressure, and we could all find a way to move forward.
We held a get-together at Larry’s place and invited both of our parents. When I informed my parents about it, they were excited about meeting a prominent family. This would make it easier for me to break the news to them.
True to my assumption, it did. On the day of the get-together, Larry took the initiative to inform our families since he knew I was nervous. At first, everyone was quiet, which scared me, but after a minute or so, my parents hugged me, which helped me to relax.
On the other hand, his parents seemed a little disappointed but tried their best not to show it. They congratulated us, and we spent the rest of the day getting to know each other.
I was relieved now that everyone was aware of the news, but his parent’s disappointment made me feel bad. I didn’t know whether it was the fact that their son was going to be a father in his late twenties or that I was the one carrying his child.
Nevertheless, I decided to move on since the child was mine and Larry’s. As long as he supported me and my parents were okay, that’s all that mattered.
Months went by fast, and I was five months pregnant before I knew it. Larry had made the journey a little easier with his support. He would take me for checkups, deal with my cravings and at times he would massage my swollen feet. The impressive part was that he managed to do all this while still going to work. How he was able to strike a balance was beyond me. I couldn’t wait to raise my child with him.
Two weeks before I hit my sixth month, Larry came home from work a little earlier than usual. I had some work to finish, but I decided to find out what was wrong.
“Are you okay?” I asked him as he sat down on the couch.
“Yes, I have to travel tomorrow for work,” He replied.
“Ohh, okay, would you like me to pack your bag?” I asked.
“No, I’m sure I’ll manage. You finish up your work and rest.” He said.
“Are you sure? I can do the work anytime, Larry. I work from home, remember?” I said.
“No, I’ll manage!” He snapped at me before heading to our room to pack.
I didn’t want to think much into it. His work was sometimes demanding, so I thought he was dealing with stress.
We didn’t talk for the rest of the evening. I finished my work, cooked for the both of us and immediately after he was done eating, he went to bed. No goodnight, no checkup, not a single word.
The following day, he left early when I was still asleep. When I woke up, I found a text from him apologizing for what had happened the previous day. I texted him back and told him to call me when he landed. The day went by, and I realized he hadn’t called by evening. I tried to call him, and his phone was off, so I let him be.
That night my mother called me and asked me to head home since I didn’t have anyone to take care of me. She always had this fear that anything would happen if I stayed alone. I agreed since I didn’t want to have to struggle for the rest of the weekend on my own.
Early the following day, I ordered an Uber and went straight to my parent’s house. It was a short distance from my place, but I opted to go early since I wanted to take a good nap.
The fact that Larry had not yet called me back disturbed me, making it hard to catch up with my family. My mum could sense something was wrong but knowing how pregnancy can affect your moods; she didn’t ask.
I settled down, took a shower and went straight to bed. A few hours later, I woke up feeling relaxed and thought I should talk to my parents. When I got to the living room, I noticed my siblings had come over, and everyone was staring at me. My mum looked disheartened, my dad was disappointed, and my siblings were shocked.
“What’s wrong? Why are all of you looking at me like that?” I asked.
“Irene show her,” My mum said to my sister.
I started getting scared.
“Show me what?” I said.
My sister walked up to me, handed me her phone and pressed play on a video of a couple getting married. The first person I spotted was Larry since the cameraman had zoomed in on him and the bride.
I returned the phone, walked back to my room, and lay on the bed. At first, I didn’t want to believe that Larry was marrying another woman. A man with whom I was having a baby left me and went to a different city to betray me?
It seemed like a nightmare I would soon wake up from, but I knew I was wide awake. My family knocked on my door several times, and I kept turning them away. My mother was convinced I would harm myself at some point, so she kept knocking until I opened the door.
“We just wanted to make sure you were okay,” My mum said standing alongside the rest of my family.
“My boyfriend just married another woman; what do you want me to tell you?” I said in anger.
“Okay, we’ll give you some space. Please don’t do anything bad to yourself,” She said before they all left.
I was mad at Larry for what he did, but I knew that no amount of anger I felt would make me harm my baby. The following days were difficult as I tried to wrap my head around what had happened.
I eventually started talking to my family, but they could still sense I was not okay. My mum and my sister decided to pick up my things from Larry’s place since I didn’t have the strength to return there.
Larry sent me several messages and even attempted to call me a couple of times since that day. I didn’t know what to tell him, so I ignored them.
My focus had now shifted to my baby and ensuring my health was okay. By the end of my sixth month, Larry showed up with his parents at my parent’s place. I was surprised they dared to return, given what they had put me through.
My dad tried his best to chase them away but insisted they had to talk to me. I didn’t have the energy for drama and still wanted answers, so I told my dad just to let them in.
“Naomi, I’m so sorry about what happened. I can’t imagine the pain I’ve caused you,” He said.
“What exactly happened, Larry?” I asked him.
“That’s not important now,” His father responded.
“Seeing that I’m the one who got affected, I think it is very important!” I snapped at him.
“The marriage was necessary and was planned a long time ago,” His mother responded.
“So you knew our relationship wasn’t long-term, and you didn’t tell me?” I asked Larry.
“It’s complicated, Naomi,” He said.
“Listen, Larry still wants to be a part of the child’s life. He is, after all, the father,” His father said.
“What will I tell him when he grows up? That his dad left me and married another woman?” I asked.
“We’re having a boy?” Larry asked in an excited tone.
“No, my daughter is having a boy. We will take care of the child.” My father said.
“Please, Naomi, let me be a part of his life. I still care about you,” Larry said.
“If you cared, you would have stood up to your parents, and we wouldn’t be in this situation. Additionally, I don’t want my child to have a stepmother,” I said.
“You know we can fight for custody when the time comes, right?” His father said.
“No, dad, this was her decision, and we’re not going that far,” Larry said.
“Are you sure about this? She might end up ruining our family name,” His mother said.
“I promise you; you’ll never hear from me again once you leave that gate. You and your family are dead to me,” I said, facing Larry.
“I’m sorry” were his last words before leaving with his parents.
I never heard from him and his family again after that day. My due date approached, and I gave birth to a mini version of Larry. My parents decided I should live with them until I could fully take care of the child. The responsibility was heavy, but having them and my siblings help made my life easier.
With time, I forgave Larry for my peace of mind. I even sent him a photo of the baby but didn’t engage in any conversation since I didn’t want him back in my life.
Now when I look at my three-year-old son, I don’t feel the pain I once felt. I know that one day we will have to have a conversation about his father, which will be challenging, but I will find a way. Larry might have betrayed me, but he had good qualities, and I can’t fail to mention them to our son.
