Eight years, I couldn’t believe how much my princess had grown. I felt like the years had gone by so fast. Watching her grow was both challenging and beautiful at the same time. From when she used to cry every night, to taking her first step to getting here. I remember how hard life was when I discovered I was pregnant with her. My only support system was my mum, she held me through every step of the way.
As I watched her blow out the candles on her cake, I knew she had wished for the same thing she always wishes for to see her father. Every year since he left has been hard for her, what I couldn’t understand is how she was so fond of him. Despite how much he hurt me I wished he was here to share this day with her. I closed my eyes for a minute hoping that when I opened them, he would appear. However, like every year my hopes would also be shattered.
I walked over to where Sheryl was standing and helped her cut the cake.
“Marcus?” I heard my mum say and I thought it was all in my head.
“Hi Mary,” He responded.
I looked up and I couldn’t believe my eyes. There he was approaching us carrying a gift bag.
“Daddy!” Sheryl ran up to him and forgot about cutting the cake.
He hugged her as I stood there still wondering how he was here. This was a man I hadn’t seen in three years. Sheryl let go of him and they both walked towards me.
“Are we still cutting the cake?” One of her friends asked.
“Let’s go cut the cake honey,” I said to Sheryl.
“Can daddy cut it too?” She asked.
I looked at Marcus who gave me a nod before placing her gift among the rest. As we cut the cake, I could see how happy Sheryl was. This was a highlight moment for her and as much as I didn’t know why he chose to come I was also very happy. Sheryl went back to playing with her friends after distributing the cake slices leaving me with him.
“How’ve you been Renee?” He asked as we both sat down.
“Okay, I guess,” I replied.
“I’ve missed the both of you so much,” He said.
“Why didn’t you come back earlier?” I asked.
“After spending time in rehab, I wanted to sort out my life before coming back. The important thing is that I’m back and I’m not going anywhere,” He responded.
Deep down I wanted to believe him but knowing his past I couldn’t imagine him staying. Marcus could never commit to anything ever since I knew him. He was so used to spending his parent’s money that he never knew anything beyond drinking, drugs and women. When we first met, I got so lost in our adventures and our passionate moments that I could never think straight. However, being pregnant with Sheryl opened my eyes to who he was. Although he spent time with our daughter, I always had the feeling that he left because he could never accept that he was a father.
We spent the rest of the afternoon catching up until Alvin showed up to pick up Sheryl and me. As he approached us, I sense some jealousy. The two greeted each other but judging from their facial expressions I knew it was all for show. Sheryl said goodbye to her friends and my family and ran up to hug Marcus.
“Will I see you again?” She asked.
“Yes, we can hang out next weekend,” He responded.
She gave him a smile and a nod before heading to Alvin’s car.
“I hope it’s okay with you,” He said.
“Yeah sure,” I replied.
We exchanged numbers and parted ways. The car ride home was silent which meant that Alvin was waiting for the right time to bring up the story. Surprisingly once we got home, he never did but he still gave me the silent treatment. On a normal day I would try to smooth things over but today my mind was preoccupied.
The following morning, I decided to talk to Alvin and sort things out. His main concern was why I didn’t tell him Marcus would be at the party. Although I knew that wasn’t the real reason, he was quiet. Alvin and I had dated for only a year, but we had mastered each other behaviours on a deeper level.
Alvin loved Sheryl and given that I was a single mom he had always tried his best to be a father figure to her. However, now that Marcus was back, he knew that things would change between them and us. Seeing that I had not seen him for years I knew that the spark we had would never come back. At least that’s what I thought.
The week flew by, and it was finally Saturday. Sheryl couldn’t contain her excitement and so she ended up waking me up earlier than usual to get ready. I called Marcus to find out if we were still meeting up and I was stunned that he was already up and getting ready. We spent the day roaming around the city going to some of Sheryl’s favourite spots.
Eventually, this became a normal routine and almost every weekend we were spending time together just the three of us. This ended up causing friction in my relationship with Alvin and we would spend nights arguing. The more we argued the more detached we became and given that we both had an ego, apologizing became a huge task.
Deep down I knew the solution to our problem was for me to stop seeing Marcus but that was easier said than done. The moments we had shared in the last couple of weeks were precious to me. Seeing our daughter warming up to someone else who was her blood was a different feeling. One I couldn’t explain to Alvin.
As the weeks went by and the silent treatment continued, I started to wonder if my relationship meant that much to me. To make matters worse Sheryl had started warming up to her father so much that she started asking if we could stay with him. Marcus was unpredictable but he was also familiar, and we had shared so much. However, Alvin and I had formed an easy bond in the past year but seeing how I was treating him made me realize it wasn’t fair. Therefore, I made the best decision for me and Sheryl and let go of my relationship with Alvin.
My first thought was to go to Marcus’s place but again I couldn’t forget how I had spent years being lost in our love. So, I took a cab to my mother’s place. If Marcus and I were going to end up together then we would have to take it slow regardless of what I felt for him.
