Edna was in her house scrolling through her phone, looking for something to do on a Saturday. All her friends were busy with their rich boyfriends, but her sponsor had just dumped her. He had left her for his newest conquest, although Edna had believed that the new girl had done the conquering. So she stayed indoors as she contemplated what was next, and that was when her phone buzzed.
“Hey girl, got plans for the weekend?” The message read.
“No, bored at home. Got something?” Edna responded.
“My boyfriend and his cousins are having a random road trip and the cousin has no plus one, want to tag along?”
Edna didn’t need to think about it. She couldn’t think of a single reason not to go. In fact, she didn’t even ask about the location; she packed clothes for every possible scenario. An hour and a half later, her friend Vicky, her boyfriend and his cousins were outside her gate to pick her up. They came in a Range Rover.
The party started right at her gate when they gave her a few shots of alcohol before starting the journey. Vicky’s boyfriend and the cousin sat at the front while Edna and Vicky sat at the back. They were going to Namanga. Before leaving Nairobi, they made one more stop to pick up yet another cousin of Vicky’s boyfriend. He joined the girls at the back.
The cousin who got into the car last was younger than the other two and very good-looking, and Edna felt an instant attraction. He introduced himself to her as Eric. By now, they were all enjoying the music and banter among the boys. The two girls laughed almost on cue and indulged in the expensive alcohol they had carried on the trip.
After a while, they made a stop to enjoy the scenery. Vicky and Edna had a chance to talk.
“I didn’t know your boyfriend’s family has such handsome men,” Edna told Vicky.
“Oh they are and they come loaded too,” Vicky said cheekily.
“I think I like Eric,” Edna said.
“Oh, that one just left campus. I asked you to tag along for Alex,” Vicky responded.
“I don’t feel like we’ve made a connection with Alex,” Edna admitted to Vicky.
“After my boyfriend, he’s the second richest amongst the cousins,” Vicky whispered in Edna’s ears as she poked her side belly. They both laughed. Without saying anything, it was decided that Alex was a better choice than Eric. Edna did what she could to get Alex’s attention for the rest of the trip. By the end of the weekend, Edna and Alex had made plans to meet up the following weekend. That marked the beginning of their interactions.
On his side, Alex wasn’t initially sure about Edna. He just needed a plus one for the impromptu road trip his cousin had organized. He knew Vicky partially dated his cousin because of his money, and he wasn’t too thrilled that Edna was her friend- bird of a feather, he thought. With time Edna grew on him. They moved from casually hooking up over the weekends to meeting up for dates on weekdays. Things were going well until Edna started asking for money.
“Babe, the girls are planning on a girl’s trip outside the city, could you send me some money?” Edna asked Alex. He sent her twenty thousand shillings.
“Babe thanks but this will not be enough for everything.”
“Edna, it’s your girls’ trip. I shouldn’t be paying for anything,” Alex responded.
“But Vicky’s boyfriend came through for her in a heavy way,” Edna pleaded.
“I’m not my cousin. I don’t have any more money for this,” Alex said with finality.
Edna pouted and left the room. Later she texted Vicky.
“I thought you said Alex is loaded?”
“He is. Why?” Vicky asked.
“He is being stingy about the girls’ trip,” Edna responded.
“Oh, I didn’t hear any of his previous girls complained, so find his right buttons.”
Edna tried to find ways to persuade him to give her more money until he finally agreed to give her double her amount. That incident, however, started a new pattern in their relationship. Edna would beg for money many times. Sometimes it worked, but there were also many instances where Alex didn’t budge.
The final straw was when Edna wanted to plan a grand birthday party. All her friends had had fancy parties as they turned thirty, and Edna wasn’t going to be the exception.
“Babe, I want to grand party for my thirtieth birthday,” Edna told Alex.
“That’s nice. What are your plans?” Alex asked.
She explained what she had in mind and then gave him a quotation of a hundred thousand at the end of the conversation.
“You sure you want to spend that much on a party?” Alex asked.
“Babe you know you only turn thirty once. I want it to be fabulous. So when do you think you can give me the money to start making plans?” Edna asked Alex.
He looked genuinely surprised.
“How am I involved in your party’s finances?” Alex asked her.
“Babe, you always make me feel like I need to beg you to treat me. Vicky is so lucky her boyfriend doesn’t treat her this way. Aren’t you supposed to be family?” Edna asked out of frustration.
“I knew this is where this was coming from,” Alex growled.
“What does that mean?”
“Edna, I’m going to say this one. I am not my cousin and I don’t have the kind of money that he has so you need to stop comparing yourself to Vicky,” Alex told Edna.
For the next couple of weeks, all they did was fight about Edna’s party. That was when she decided to change tactics. She texted Alex while at work one morning and told him that she was pregnant. Later she asked to schedule an appointment with a gynaecologist and asked Alex for ten thousand. Alex asked around and got more affordable options. So when Edna asked for the money, he told her he had cheaper and more reliable options.
“Babe, I can’t just see any gynaecologist. This is the person Vicky uses,” Edna said.
“Edna, for the umpteenth time, stop comparing yourself to Vicky.” Alex said furiously.
“I have to because she doesn’t have to jump through hoops for stuff.”
After hurling insults at Alex, she finally said, “I guess I picked the wrong family member, the stingy one. I thank God I’m not truly pregnant.”
She realized as soon as she said it that she had plans to get more money from him.
Alex was trembling with anger, and he kicked her out immediately, which signified the end of their relationship.
