What’s a deal breaker that you can never compromise on? For me, it’s odour, specifically, foot odour. I can’t stand it and if I meet someone who has foot odour, I immediately lose interest in him. The only problem is that it’s hard to tell if someone has foot odour until you invite them to your place or visit them at their place. So, I have found myself in really awkward situations where I’m attracted to a guy until he removes his shoes. There’s one that I’ll never forget.

This guy was super hot so the last thing I expected was that he had foot odour. He dressed well and was well groomed. Even his beard was nicely trimmed and oiled. He was the epitome of a fine man. The only thing I noticed was that he liked wearing loafers with his suits. If you know fashion, then you know people don’t wear socks with loafers. However, I assumed he had to be super particular about cleaning the shoes so they don’t smell.

We went out on a couple of dates and I was quickly falling for the guy. I enjoyed his company and it seemed like we couldn’t run out of things in common. After assessing him and checking the boxes, I was ready to take things to the next level. I couldn’t wait to spend some alone time with him. However, that same weekend, my friend had planned a weekend getaway for her birthday and so couldn’t miss it.

“You have to come.” She insisted.

“But I have other plans with the guy I was telling you about.”

“Bring him along. I’d love to meet him as well.”

It wasn’t a bad idea. We would get to enjoy a romantic getaway without spending a dime. So, I decided to invite him to come with me.

“Of course. I’d love to go.” He answered.

With that, I was about to have the best weekend of my life, or so I thought. My job was simply to show up and have fun. My friend had booked a beautiful Airbnb for the whole weekend and had hired a chef. So, I wasn’t worried about impressing my guest. After all, he was also getting a free trip.

On that day, I was packed and ready to go by 9 am. The guy had a car so he offered to drive to the location while the rest of the group went in a van that my friend had hired. However, we made a quick stop along the way and everyone got to meet each other.

“So, you’re the guy who has been making this girl look so fresh?” The birthday girl asked.

He got along well with the girls which was another plus for me. After 30 minutes, we were back on the road and headed to the property. We arrived around 3 pm in the afternoon and everyone wanted to freshen up before re-grouping. The birthday girl showed us to our rooms and we settled in.

As I unpacked, the guy started removing his shoes so he could wear some sandals. Then, I was hit by an odour that made me dizzy. I turned to look at the guy who seemed oblivious to how bad his feet smelled.

“What’s that?” I asked trying to play dumb.

“What?”

“You don’t smell that?”

“No, I’m going to take a shower. Do you want to join?”

A few minutes ago, I would have happily run to the shower with him. Now, I can’t even look him in the eye. I was completely shocked that such a well-groomed man could have foot odour. Then I noticed that he wasn’t wearing socks yet he was wearing sneakers for literally the whole day.

“You don’t wear socks at all?” I asked as he showered.

“No. My feet get sweaty and I get uncomfortable.”

“Oh, I didn’t know that,” I said aloud but I wasn’t mostly telling myself.

I had to put his shoes outside the house because I couldn’t stand the smell. When he came out, he started asking where his shoes were but I had to lie to him.

“They’re getting cleaned,” I said.

“Oh, thanks, babe. Why didn’t you come to shower with me?”

“I was taking care of things.”

“Should we cuddle really quick before joining the others?” He asked.

“Actually, I think my friend needs me. We want to prepare something for tonight.”

“Okay. Should I come with you?”

“No, just stay in the room.”

I had to lie the entire weekend to avoid him. The bond we had formed over the past few weeks had instantly been spoiled because he had foot odour. He noticed that something was wrong since before the trip, I wanted to spend time with him but now, I couldn’t even sit for 5 minutes with him alone. The only thing I’m thankful for was that my friends didn’t know why I had a sudden change of heart.

After hyping the guy to them, it would be so embarrassing if they knew he had foot odour. I was simply counting the time until I went back to my place. A long weekend later, the trip was over and it was time to go back. However, I didn’t leave without an incident. I insisted on joining the others in the van instead of driving back with the guy. As I expected, he didn’t take it very well.

“You’ve been avoiding me this whole weekend. What did I do wrong?” He asked.

“Nothing. I just haven’t been feeling well.”

“Lies. You were very happy with your friend but as soon as I walked in, you change. What did I do? I thought we were getting along well.”

“Since you insist on knowing, your feet smell. I have a thing about foot odour and it just ruined my mood.”

“What? My feet don’t smell.” He answered.

He insisted that he didn’t have foot odour. However, it was a fact whether he wanted to admit it or not. He went back by himself and I went with the others. From that day, he never contacted me and I’m glad he didn’t because I didn’t know how to break things off.
