My mum and I have always had a close relationship since I was a child. To me, she was more like a big sister than a mum since she had me with she was only 16 years old. I have watched her struggle to raise me and at some point, I had to live with my grandmother since my mother couldn’t afford a nanny to take care of me while she was at work. However, when she got back on her feet, life was good. I was around 14 years old and my mum was 30 when I went back to live with her. She would take me on shopping sprees and lunch dates. Then, I started noticing things that I didn’t when I was a child. My mum was a hottie and men used to hit on her all the time we were out on a date.
Most people assumed I was her younger sister and we both went along with it. At some point, we even started dressing alike so we would look more like sisters. Our relationship remained the same even as the years went by. When I finished high school, my mother encouraged me to apply for a job as an air hostess.
“You’ll get to travel the world and meet all kinds of people.” She said.
I was hesitant since I didn’t want to be far from home but my mum kept encouraging me. Eventually, I gave in and sent my application. I got a reply inviting me for an interview which I passed and went for training. 6 months later, I started my career as an air hostess.
The job was everything my mum had said it would be and more. I looked forward to working every day and my workmates were beyond amazing. Even the pilots were warm and nice to me. We became like a family and even when we went on break we’d meet for lunch every day.
One day, I brought my mum to our usual lunch meetups since I wanted to introduce the woman who convinced me to become an air hostess.
“Is this your mum?” One of the pilots asked.
“Yeah. She’s gorgeous, isn’t she?”
“Most definitely.”
We all burst out in laughter as the pilot drew a chair for my mum next to him.
After the date, the pilot called me and asked me to set him up on a date with my mum.
“Please, Bella, you have to help me win her over.”
“Don’t worry, Mike. I got you.” I said reassuring him.
For sure, if there was anyone I would love my mum to end up with it was Captain Mike. He was a favourite in the airline due to his down-to-earth nature and amazing sense of humour. Despite being a senior pilot, he wasn’t afraid to make a fool of himself. He was quite the joker. We always had a good time around him and I knew my mum would be in good hands.
“Mum, what do you think of Captain Mike?” I asked, trying to warm her up.
“He’s a great guy but there’s something about him that I can’t place my finger on.”
“You know, you like analyzing people too much. That’s why you’re still single. Captain Mike likes you and he wants to take you out on a date.”
After a quick thought, she replied, “Sure. Why not?”
I let Mike know that my mum was open to going on a date but I had to put some conditions.
“Take her to a nice place, treat her well and make sure she’s having a good time. I want her to come back with a smile from ear to ear.”
Don’t worry about that, Bella. You know I’m the smooth operator.” He joked.
I wasn’t worried. As I said, I knew Mike was a good man.
My mum started getting ready around 2 pm on the day of the date with Captain Mike. I hooked her up with my hair and makeup team to glam her up and make her look like the trophy she was. At around 4 pm, I stopped by to see her and prep for the date.
“Look at this fine girl,” I said to her as we embraced. “You look so good, Mum.”
“Thank you. I hope Mike will like what he sees.”
“Are you crazy? Of course, he will.”
He came to pick her up and they headed to the restaurant.
“You look stunning.” He said to her.
“Thank you. You clean up well too.”
They kept flirting with each other until they arrived at the restaurant. After being welcomed by the concierge, they made their way to their table and sat facing each other.
“It almost feels like I’m on a date with your daughter.” He commented referring to our resemblance.
However, my mum didn’t like the comparison and quickly changed the subject.
“So, why did you become a pilot?”
“It was almost the same story as your daughter but the only difference is my parents were not going to take no for an answer. I wanted to pursue a music career but they had other plans. It all worked out well in the end.”
“Sure.” She replied as she fiddled with her food.
“Are you not hungry? You’ve been playing with your pasta for almost 10 minutes now.”
My mum took a deep breath and then looked at Mike.
“I won’t lie to you. I think you’re a fine man and I hoped this would work out. However, the comments you made about my daughter just don’t sit well with me.”
“What comments? That you look like her? I thought that was a compliment.”
“Oh, so you think my daughter is beautiful?”
“She is beautiful.”
“Then why are you not on a date with her?”
Tempers were high and so were the voices. The two were now arguing loudly in a high-end restaurant while the rest of the diners looked on.
“To be honest, I tried but she turned me down.” He answered followed by dead silence.
My mum simply stood up, picked up her bag and walked out. Mike tried to follow her but she was too heated to listen to him. He went back to the restaurant and tried to pay before my mum left but by the time he got to the parking lot, she was gone.
When she got home, I was there waiting for her but I noticed she was in a bad mood and that she was back earlier than expected.
“What happened?” I asked her.
“They’re all assholes! All of them!” She shouted in tears and then explained everything.
“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you. I didn’t think it was important.”
After that date, my relationship with Captain Mike was never the same. I couldn’t forgive him for embarrassing my mum like that and all because he couldn’t keep my name out of his mouth.
