I thought dating a surgeon was the best thing that could have happened to me. Don’t get me wrong, I know I’m beautiful and could attract any man I wanted. However, when I started my nursing course, the lecturers made it seem like it was impossible for a surgeon to even look at a nurse.
I came to learn that they weren’t lying. The doctors and surgeons at the hospital acted like we didn’t exist and only talked to us when they needed something. That was the norm. We stayed in our lane and they stayed in theirs. However, it didn’t stop us from fantasizing about the doctors and surgeons, especially the ones doing their residencies.
“Have you seen the new surgeon?” A friend of mine asked.
“Yeah. I saw him in the morning.”
“He’s so handsome.”
A lot of the nurses were smitten by the new surgeon but we knew how things always went. They barely acknowledged our existence. However, this one was different. He greeted everyone when he came in and occasionally chatted with us.
He started becoming closer to me than any of the other nurses and when I noticed he was interested in me, I didn’t waste time showing my interest as well. We became almost inseparable. I was his go-to nurse and helped him with all his patients.
Everyone was envious that I had gotten the surgeon’s attention. Things got even worse when they found out he asked me out.
“He pulled me to a corner, held my hand, looked me in my eyes, and told me how he had liked me since the first day he saw me,” I told a group of colleagues who had gathered around me after overhearing the stories.
“Oh my God, what did you do after?” One of them asked.
“I smiled and told him I liked him too. He then asked me out on a date.”
Everyone screamed in excitement which startled the patients and doctors around. We quickly dispersed after getting a warning from one of the older nurses. However, I couldn’t stop smiling the whole day. I kept checking the time and counting down the minutes to go home.
The surgeon called me shortly after I got to my house to confirm our date.
“Of course, I didn’t forget. I’m getting ready as we speak.”
“Perfect. I’ll send you the location.” He said then hang up.
After getting ready, I checked my phone and saw a WhatsApp and M-Pesa message. He had sent me the location and money for an Uber. He was already making a good impression and I hadn’t even gone on the date.
I arrived at the restaurant elegantly dressed and ready to bag me a surgeon. He looked impressed by my dress choice.
“Wow, you look very beautiful.”
I sat down and got comfortable. He was very friendly which made me feel at ease. I was used to stern and snobbish doctors in the hospital but he was different.
We didn’t talk about work for almost the whole date. Instead, he asked about my life and hobbies. We were having such a good time that for a while I forgot that I worked with him. Then I decided to bring up work.
“What’s it like being a surgeon?” I had always wanted to ask this question.
“It’s no different from any other medical personnel.”
“Really? Isn’t it scary operating on patients?”
“No. In fact, I get horny sometimes when I’m at work.”
I didn’t expect him to say that so I didn’t know how to react. I just sat quietly with a shocked look. He was also quiet after realizing what he had said.
“I didn’t mean that I get horny because of operating on people. I meant that I think of it as any other job. It doesn’t interfere with my personal life.”
He kept talking for another 10 minutes trying to explain himself. However, the damage had already been done and I couldn’t stop thinking about what he had said. From that point, he was no longer the hot surgeon. When I looked at him, I saw a creepy man who got horny while operating on people.
The date ended shortly after. He offered to drive me home but I politely declined. I felt relieved when I got home but dreaded going to work the next day and running into the surgeon or worse, explaining to the other nurses how the date went. This must be the reason why we were constantly warned about dating doctors and surgeons.
When I got to work the following morning, everyone was eagerly waiting for me at the reception. I barely settled in before they gathered around me.
“How did it go?” One nurse asked.
“Did he kiss you?”
I was quiet for what seemed like an eternity. The girls started looking at each other with worried looks. I was the first nurse to ever go on a date with a surgeon and I blew it. They must have been thinking.
“It was fine. We had a good date but I don’t think we’re compatible.”
“What? Why?”
“He’s a very busy man.” I lied.
“Well, we knew that it can’t be serious. Anyway, did you guys kiss? Where did he take you?” One of the nurses asked excitedly.
“We didn’t kiss but he offered to take me home.”
Just as I was explaining the date, the surgeon walked in and we locked eyes. He walked in without talking to anyone. I excused myself and then followed him to his office.
“Good morning.”
“Morning. Have you attended to the patients?”
“Yes.”
“Okay. Good.”
I stood silently as he checked his files. He didn’t say anything else to me for the rest of the day. Things got really awkward and people started to notice that we were not as close as we used to be.
I decided to change my shift to the night shift so I could avoid the rumours going around. My colleagues thought that I had slept with the surgeon and that was the reason he wasn’t interested in me anymore. However, if they knew that I was the one who rejected him they wouldn’t believe it.
