What happened to chivalry? Am I expecting too much or are all good men dead? Well, I think all good men are dead. They died in an era when men could take a bullet for their women. If Samson was born in today’s world, he would have been a heartthrob heartbreaker who’s only focused on building his muscles and bagging as many girls as possible.

I could say that Simon was the reincarnated Samson. He definitely shared similar physical features. For instance, he was the strongest man I knew. He also had a weakness for women. However, the innocent little me thought that I would be the one who changed him. If I knew how things would turn out, I would have pulled a Delilah move and taken away his power. However, I was smitten. The hottest guy I had ever seen was paying attention to me.

Simon knew exactly what to say to get me hooked on him and after a few dates, I was addicted. He was like my drug. I could hardly function the whole day without seeing him. Somehow, I convinced him to move in with me. I think he was just tired of driving from his place to my place every day. For me, I just wanted him all to myself. I also wanted to monitor his moves since I knew he could be a heartbreaker.

Within a few weeks of knowing each other, we were already living together. Since I worked from home, I spent a lot of time in the house. Simon, on the other hand, spent most of his time outside. Even though he also worked from home, he hardly stayed in the house.

“I have to meet clients and then hang out with the boys.” He said

I was understanding at first but things escalated really fast. He’d come home at 2 am reeking of alcohol. He also stopped catering to basic needs like shopping. We stopped going out yet he swore that he had money.

“Where is your money going because it’s not going to me or the house?” I constantly asked him.

“We were out and I bought my boys bottles of Hennessy.” He answered.

Again, this was always his answer. I thought it was harmless socialization so I didn’t make a big deal out of it. However, nothing changed for months. I was the one catering for everything while Simon had fun with his boys. I worked myself tirelessly. Still, I consoled myself because Simon was a heartthrob and I kinda liked having a hot guy as my boyfriend.

My friends had warned me because such men could easily turn into a heartbreaker and Simon was showing signs that he was one.

However, I couldn’t bring myself to break up with him. Whenever he walked through the door, I would forget that I was mad at him for failing to send me money and we’d be good. This was the pattern for most of the relationship.

After months of complaining, Simon finally took me out for clothes shopping and lunch. We had a fun time shopping but as we had lunch, he kept ducking and hiding his face.

“Do you see someone you know?” I asked him.

“Yes. My friend is here with his girlfriend. I don’t want him to see me.”

I didn’t think much of it. However, as we were leaving, a woman approached us and hugged Simon.

“Oh my God, Simon. So you can hide from me.” She said.

Simon was silent. She introduced herself as his longtime friend. He then pulled her aside and they talked briefly before joining me.

“Let’s go.” He said in a slightly irritated tone.

He didn’t say much and my attempts to ask him about the woman were futile.

“She’s just a friend.” He answered.

However, I didn’t buy the story. They both acted very weirdly and Simon had guilt written all over his face. Being the detective I was, I learned his phone password and waited for him to fall asleep so I could unlock it.

Nothing prepared me for what I saw on his phone. There was text after text from women. He called them “babe” “dear” and “beautiful”. The more I read, the more I felt my stomach cramp up. He had been flirting and entertaining women the whole time we were in a relationship. The money that he said he was spending on his boys, he was spending on other women.

Finally, I couldn’t take it anymore. I ran to the bathroom and vomited because of the anxiety I felt. I didn’t know whether to wake him up and confront him or pack his things and throw him out.

As I was sitting in the bathroom thinking about my life, I heard movement outside the door. When I opened it, Simon was on the other side holding his phone.

“What were you doing with my phone?” He asked.

“How dare you question me when you have been cheating on me this whole time?”

“What do you mean?” He still didn’t know that I had seen his messages.

“Just get out of my house. I never want to see you again.”

“Where do you want me to go?”

“Go to those women you’ve been talking to and spending money on.”

Hi finally connected what was going on.

“I can explain.” He said.

“My friends warned me that you were a heartbreaker but I gave you the benefit of the doubt.” I started as tears flowed down my face.

“They’re just my friends. I love you. You’re my angel.”

“You don’t cheat on your angel. You don’t break your angel’s heart. You’re just a basic pretty boy, a heartbreaker. I thought you were special but you’re nothing.” I said bitterly.

Surprisingly, Simon moved out without a lot of objection. I guess he didn’t even like living with me or maybe I was too much in his business. Whatever it was, I’m glad he left. I never realized until he left but I was actually stressed and slowly sinking into depression. I barely went out or talked to friends who I used to talk to every day. I’m just lucky that I have good friends who never gave up on me and even when I distanced myself, they would check in on me once in a while. Getting heartbroken is bad but it hurts a little bit more when the guy is a heartthrob.
