Brenda had always been ambitious. From a tender age, she knew she wanted to be wealthy and wasn’t afraid of work. She put in the work at school all the way to university. However, after graduation, she quickly learned that hard work alone wasn’t always enough to make it in life. It was important to position yourself for opportunities; it was on such a venture that she met Ben.
Brenda’s close friend Ashley had a meeting with a land broker, and Brenda asked if she could tag along. It seemed like an opportunity to learn something even though she didn’t have enough money to purchase land. Ashley was glad to have her join them since she believed in empowering each other. Ashley was meeting Zack.
They met and viewed a few parcels of land. During the viewing, Zack got a call. He informed the caller that he was about to wrap up a site viewing but could meet immediately after. The caller opted to join them because he was close to where they were. The caller was Ben. After the viewing, Zack offered to buy them lunch as a way to create rapport with his potential customers, and they agreed.
They engaged in conversation as they enjoyed some nyama choma.
“Did you like any of the land parcels you viewed?” Ben asked Brenda.
“I think the location is good but I was accompanying my friend for now,” Brenda responded.
“Okay. I’ve done business with Zack for a while now,” said Ben.
“Do you also sell land?”
“No, I’m in the import business,” Ben responded.
Brenda felt like a prayer had been answered. She had wanted to get into the business herself, but she often encountered an obstacle. She wasted no time asking Ben as many questions as she could; after all, the worst he could do was withhold information that would leave her in the same position as she was already.
Ben had once been in the same position as Brenda. Before his wife, Eunice, had helped him, he was a broke man who had tried several failed business ventures. Eunice fell for him because of his looks before she realized he had a passion for business but didn’t know how to go about it. She took him in, taught him the ropes, and even gave him the capital to import products. Within no time, Ben was raking in the dough. Further, being a man, he was easily accepted in business groups that Eunice wasn’t. His friendship status with Eunice also changed when Eunice got pregnant.
During his heart-to-heart with Brenda, he neglected to mention that the person who helped him was his wife. It wouldn’t have mattered to Brenda because she had finally found a way in. Ben also neglected to mention that he might have liked Brenda. The two remained in contact even after that lunch.
Brenda was very excited. She had significant savings, but that wouldn’t be enough, so she took out a loan. She decided she wouldn’t tell Ashley until the deal panned out, and it did. Using Ben’s contacts and guidance, she brought in a few goods and made a profit. She took Ashley out to thank her for her role in the matter. Later Ashley mentioned the situation to Zack and equally thanked him, but Zack told her something troubling.
“Tell your friend to watch out for Zack’s wife. She’s very protective of him and unpredictable.”
Ashley passed on the message to Brenda word for word.
Brenda and Ben had gotten close over the weeks as he helped her set up her business. The lines had become blurry. She had suspected that he was married but decided that information was inconsequential as long as she was gaining from the situation. However, she mentioned the warning to Ben.
“I hear your wife is a lioness,” Brenda nudged him.
“Where did you hear that? People exaggerate, I have her in check,” Ben responded.
He was saying what Brenda wanted to hear. She would have believed anything he said at that point. Their affair continued, and she continued receiving help in her business. They got bolder, and she started accompanying Ben to social places more often. That’s when the threats started.
They started with phone calls from callers with hidden IDs. The caller would call and not say a word, but she could tell someone was on the line. After that, she started receiving messages telling her to keep away from other people’s husbands. She raised concerns with Ben on a night out. Once again, Ben told her not to worry. However, one of Ben’s friends, who overheard the conversation, later warned her about his wife.
The second warning from Ben’s friend freaked her out, but Ben downplayed the situation. By now, she was making bigger moves. Ben would provide a part of the capital needed to bring in a larger shipment of goods. They were busy tending to that business when she appeared out of nowhere.
Eunice showed up, catching both Ben and Brenda by surprise. Before they could say anything, Eunice served Brenda a hot slap and started hurling insults at her.
“Homewrecker. Where do you think he got this money he’s giving you?” Eunice asked Brenda.
“Eunice, you’re embarrassing me,” Ben told her.
Totally ignoring his pleas, Eunice hit Brenda again and pulled out her wig.
Ben managed to pull her away from Brenda.
“Ben, you’re even using the contacts I introduced you to with her?”Eunice asked bitterly.
Brenda was crying in pain from the assault, trying to hide her face as people were recording the altercation. She tried running away from the scene, but it was too late; one of the videos caught her face, and people soon started circulating them on social media. Later, Eunice texted Brenda, “Let that serve as your final warning. Stay away from my husband.”
The message was home. Brenda cut all ties with Ben as she dealt with the shame of the video trending.
