The Singlehood Series: My Crush Criticized Everything At the Restaurant I Took Her To And Harassed The Staff

Have you ever liked someone so much, gone out of your way to impress them only to find out they were a horrible human being? That’s exactly what happened to me. When Bianca, my crush from university, agreed to go on a date with me, it felt like I was getting recognition from The Queen herself. Finally, she was going to give me her time. I knew I had to make a good impression since it took me years to get her attention. So, I decided to take her to my favourite restaurant.

However, not everyone was excited to hear that I was taking Bianca on a date. My friends didn’t feel the same way I felt about her. They thought she was a bit rude and unbearable.

“It’s just because she refused to go on a date with you,” I said to one of them as they warned me not to date her.

“Suit yourself, bro,” he replied.

She had also earned a reputation for playing hard to get. Very few were successful in asking her out and those who did came back wishing they didn’t. A rumour spread that she once went to one of our friend’s houses and complained how stuffy it was then proceeded to draw all the curtains and open all the windows. My friend invested in that automatic air freshener from that day to make sure his house always smelt heavenly. While most thought that was arrogance, I thought it was iconic. She simply couldn’t settle for less and I liked it.

I hoped that I’d make a good impression, unlike my friends. Besides, we were a lot older and I had many cards to pull including a high-end romantic restaurant.

“I’ll pick you up at 8 pm,” I told her over the phone.

“Okay. You have my address.”

I went to pick her up just as I had said and I could already tell we were off to a bad start. While I was dressed down in a t-shirt and jeans, she came out looking like a goddess in a bright yellow dress, gold heels, and jewellery to match. I was slightly embarrassed as I got out of the car to meet her.

“I thought you said we were going to a fancy restaurant.” She said.

“Yes, but I’ve been there before and people were dressed down.”

“Okay. If you say so.”

I opened the car door and she got in. The ride to the restaurant was somehow quiet but I tried to start a conversation. Bianca was visibly upset and I was trying my best to lighten the mood. I put on a playlist trying to impress with my taste in music or start a conversation but it didn’t work. It made her more upset.

“Shut it off. I’m having a headache.” She commanded.

“Sorry,” I said turning down the music.

“I said shut it off!” That voice sent chills down my spine but I kept my cool.

To me, this was all part of the test. If I could get through one date with her, I knew that I could break down her wall and be the best boyfriend she could ever have.

We got to the restaurant relatively fast and a guard came to open the door for Bianca since it was raining. She walked to the entrance and I followed behind. We then walked in together and were escorted to a table with a romantic set up by our waiter.

“This is what you call a high-end restaurant?” she asked as we sat down.

“Don’t you like the place? We can go somewhere else if you want.”

“If I knew you were bringing me to a club I would have also worn jeans. I’m overdressed.”

“Well, you look nice.”

“I need alcohol if we’re staying here.”

I called the waiter who explained that it was happy hour and that we’d get three cocktails for the price of one. Bianca laughed. I knew she felt the restaurant was not up to her standard but it was one of the most popular spots in town. We ordered our drinks and the waiter brought them promptly.

“All three?” she asked looking at the table full of cocktails.

“Yea. So that you get drunk and stop bitching.” I joked but clearly, she didn’t think it was funny from the look she gave me.

We sat in silence for about 30 minutes as she scrolled through her phone and sipped the cocktail.

“It tastes like water,” she complained.

That was just the beginning. Despite her complaints, she agreed to eat at that restaurant. The waiter brought the menu and we looked through it trying to find something to eat.

“Is this it?” she asked the waiter.

“Yea. I can recommend something you’d like.” She quickly suggested.

Bianca agreed and the waiter recommended pork chops with fries. Again, Bianca laughed but agreed to the order. I ordered fried pork and ugali.

She took one bite when the meal came and shook her head in disgust.

“Pork chops are the easiest thing to make. How can you mess that up?” she said loudly.

“You can change the order,” I said calling the waiter.

“Any issues?”

“Yes. The meat is too hard. Tell them to cook it well.” she commanded.

“Of course.”

He came back again with a fresh order and set it down. We all watched her as she took a bite. The look on her face let me know another storm was coming.

“Wow, didn’t that so-called chef in this so-called high-end restaurant go to school? This food is so bad.”

The waiter changed her order three times before the manager came and suggested that she orders something else. She agreed but requested a takeaway.

That was one of the most embarrassing days of my life and I still think about it to this day. I told my friends about my experience and they all said they warned me. After my experience, I agreed with them that Bianca was a bit of a handful. She didn’t have to cause such a scene even if she didn’t like the restaurant. I asked her many times if she wanted to change locations but she wanted to stay. I think she enjoys humiliating people. That’s what I came to learn. Anyway, I never went on a second date with her nor did I even think about asking her out again.
