I had a crush on a guy who was in our friend group but I was too scared to tell him. So, instead of making a move, I started making jokes that we were dating. At first, he was into it and even played along but things got a little too serious and he soon realized that my feelings were real. We would often hang out as a group and every time I saw him, I would get butterflies in my stomach. Somehow, word got out that I had a crush on him and our friends started teasing me.

It was all fun and games and he even seemed to enjoy the attention but whenever he brought a girl around, he would treat me so badly. It became obvious to me that I was the feelings were not mutual and he simply tolerated me because we were friends. However, I was determined to change his mind. So, I kept making advances at him. I started inviting him over to my place, cooked for him and even offered him my car to drive when going to work.

Despite my efforts, he didn’t seem interested in dating me. Every time we hang out as friends, he’d bring a girl along. In fact, he went as far as to introduce one as his girlfriend.

“Why didn’t you tell me he was bringing someone?” I asked his best friend.

“I didn’t know.”

My crush on him went from being cute to being embarrassing. My friends knew what I was doing for him yet he didn’t give me any attention. Nonetheless, I put in more effort thinking that was what he wanted.

Daniel was a hot cake. He was attractive, tall, and well-built which meant that he attracted many women. So, it didn’t surprise me that he had a new girl every weekend. We teased him for it. However, when I realized I had feelings for him, his dates were more of a threat than a joke. I also wanted him to settle down and he didn’t seem to be finding love. I figured I’d try my luck to see if we would work as a couple.

Our friends seemed to be all for it and even encouraged me to shoot my shot. However, things were not going as planned.

During one of our hangouts, I decided to invite my best friend. She wasn’t part of our group but she wanted to meet this guy on who I had such a huge crush. I didn’t know this was going to be the worst mistake I ever made. Frida was the type of girl that everybody seemed to like – man or woman. She was a social butterfly and the life of the party. My friends liked her instantly including Daniel.

In fact, he liked her a little too much and it made me regret inviting her but I let them get to know each other since I trusted my friend. After hours of talking, I went to join them which irked Daniel.

“What are you doing?” he asked.

“Hanging out with you.”

“We’re in the middle of a conversation.”

“Do you think this is a date? We’re all hanging out as friends. If you want to talk to her, ask her out on a date.”

Indeed, he asked my best friend out and she agreed. I was dumbfounded since they both knew very well how I felt. Maybe it was the shock but I didn’t react. I went on with the party as if nothing had happened. This also made them think that I was okay with it.

After that night, Frida and Daniel started going on regular dates. It got to a point where Daniel and I stopped hanging out. That was where I drew the line. She could take my crush but there was no way I’d let her take my friend.

“Why are you not coming over anymore?” I asked Daniel over the phone.

“I’ve been busy.”

“Doing what?”

“Work.”

“What about Frida?”

“What about her?”

“You guys have been going out a lot. Do you like her?”

“Yea, she’s amazing. I think it might be serious.”

“So, you want to act like we’re nothing.”

“Sue, I love you but we’re not dating. I can date whoever I want.”

It’s like I had heard the worst news but this was the reality. Daniel didn’t like me like that. I knew it but I convinced myself that I could change his mind. To him, I was like a sister who advised him and took care of him. I knew he didn’t have feelings for me when I invited him to my house wearing a short skirt and a crop top but he didn’t make a move.

Though I felt betrayed especially by my best friend, I supported their relationship since, at the end of the day, I wanted Daniel to find love which he did. They were still going strong 4 months after they started dating.

“How’s Daniel doing?” I asked his best friend.

“Honestly, I don’t know. I haven’t seen much of him since he started dating Frida.”

“It seems they really like each other. This is the longest Daniel has stayed with a girl.”

“Yea.”

“Well, as long as they are happy, that’s all that matters.”

When I remember all the things I did for him in an effort to get his attention, I just laugh at myself. However, I’m happy for him for finding love even if it was with my best friend. I’m no longer close to either of them and it’s always awkward whenever they come to our hangouts. Luckily, my friends chose my side and we’re still close.

After being rejected by my friend, I promised myself to never shoot my shot again. If I have a crush, I’ll let it be until he makes a move. I don’t think I can survive another embarrassing experience like this one.
